The hatchet of my youth was calling out for a new lease on life.
Filing off the mushrooming caused by myself a quarter century earlier was my penance for using a hammer on the poll like a splitting wedge.

Yeah it's a very handy size and works great on taking out the roots on overgrown bushes and shrubs.

It SS? They're sold with the black finish for a reason.
Don't like hatchets myself. Have a W.W. II issue machete that I can use faster. If I need an axe, I use an axe.
"...hatchet of my youth..." The local nannies are going to have an excrement fit over the very idea of a kid having his own hatchet. snicker.

I have to admit that my mom was never really a big fan, but that almost made me more sure that it was a great idea!

I completely agree with your philosophy on hatchets. I'm typically an axe man myself. This little guy just got the benefit of joining the heavy iron collection just because of it's history.
It's not stainless. Just carbon steel.
The polish does a pretty good job keeping corrosion at bay.
They still need a coat of oil now and then. If left with pitch on, or outside over night, a little 0000 steel wool brings them right back to shiny again.
I've polished up about half a dozen axes in the last few years and even though they require a little bit of tlc, I think the finished product warrants the effort.
Many folks couldn't be bothered to spend the time on something so simple as an axe, but for some twisted reason, I love rubbing them back to a shiny finish every time.

This ones a not taken to quite the same level of finish, but it's holding up great.
