My Favorite Gun Shop in Colorado!

Interesting name choice for Green Mountain. My marketing professor told me a story about a lady who opened a coffe shop and named it after herself, Sam Bucks. Starbucks sued her for likeness rights, since it was a similar business with a "similar" name. She decided to fight it because that was her birth name and she wasn't trying to imitate Starbucks and she ended up losing and having to change the name of her shop. Green Mountain somewhat resembles Gander Mountain. Starbucks is more of a business bully then Gander is so I don't think they'd waste the time for just one store. Just a thought. Sounds like a nice store though.

Green Mountain is a geological feature and a hilltop neighborhood here in the Denver area. The store has been in business for at least 20 years, though they have only been in their present location for about two years.

There is also a very nice indoor range just up the street called Green Mountain Family Shooting Center, with no affiliation to GMG.

I was thrilled with their reloading supplies, though I use Dad's Wholesale in the Denver area for bulk supplies. Though a couple guys at GMG's can be "quirky", I was very impressed with their inventory, their general knowledge of small stuff like powder burn rates, etc. (not your typical gunshop knowledge), and the prices on used guns. I stop in there at least once a week or so to check out used gun prices.

I've lived in the Springs and in Golden. Specialty Sports and GMG have both been good to me. As has 5280. Only place I'd advise you stay away from is Gunsmoke in Arvada -- had some weird and unsatisfactory dealings there.

Parker Guns and Ammo is a lot better now with the new owners. Jensens is cool. But I really miss Rob's Guns on Parker Road. Rob gave the best deals ever.

Specialty Sports

Ok maybe I just got the ONE jerk in the store.

Usually I have good luck W/ the heavyset blonde chick or Lawrence (tall ,thin black hair )

They don't have a website but the adress is 4285 E. Fountain BLVD. there on the South east corner of Fountain & Murray

And as for inventory it's like a Super Wal-Mart for guns

Is that place open?

<edit>

Read about it on the "Places to Shoot on the Front Range" thread.

When I get down to Colorado Springs to visit my daughter we check out Specialty Sports. When I went in there for the first time a couple of years ago I was about 90% certain I wanted a particular ACOG for my M4gery. The salesman was very knowledgeable and helpful--pulled out the exact one I had in mind, mounted it on one of their carbines for me to try on for size, and generally helped all he could and otherwise let me make up my own mind.

I could have ordered the same unit from another source and saved a few bucks; but I figured they earned the sale and took it home with me.

The CO sales tax is a killer, though.

I live about 10 miles from Green Mountain Guns. The Original Poster is right....It is one of the very best stores in Colorado and my favorite. I've made a number of gun purchases over the past 5 years there and have gotten great service and prices every single time. I usually visit there every Saturday to see what they've got in the used revolver case - one of my weaknesses.

Green mountain was here long before Gander, and will be long after if there is any justice in the univesre.

Gander mountain has crappy selection and the highest prices in the business, often over MSRP/BBV.

I really miss Rob's Guns on Parker Road. Rob gave the best deals ever.

Rob did have a neat little shop, but he was just tired of running a business. He's working for Lenny at The Firing Line these days just to keep busy.

Any recommendations on western slope gun shops? I'm partial to used guns and there is nothing in Montrose.

I met a fellow - Shane Fuchs from Alpha Tacical in Grand Junction. I'm thinking of asking him to build a plinker AR for me (great price). Anyone have any dealings with him?

Thanks,

Tom

I have been to Green Mountain guns several times, and bought my 338 Win Mag there, love the place. We are trying to get them to come to the Hunt Fish and Outdoor Expo at Jefferson County Fairgrounds on June 14th.

Hey Nightwing. Darrel who owns Bait and Bullet is a different kind of guy sort of a Grizzly Adams type. You have to go in there a few times but once you get to know him and develop a relationship hes a lot of fun with a good sense of humor.
His prices are not the lowest thats true and his small shop reminds me of the old fashioned rural hardware stores were people would congregate talk hunting and fishing and once in a while actually buy a firearm or some ammo. I actually like the store and its old time atmosphere.
I have also purchased firearms from Green Mountain Guns and while they generally have a good selection and fair prices I was never really impressed with the way the store was run finding the place to be overly business like and a little unfriendly. I always wanted to make my purchase and get out as fast as possible. Jensen Arms is good for military type weapons with some knowledgeable counter help who will work with you. I think I will pick up a FAL from them before the Dems get in and those types of things become history.
I used to frequent Bighorn Trading Co in of all places Boulder. I don't know if they are still in business but they had a good selection, fair prices and that old time none corporate feel to it.
The biggest problem in the metro area is not the lack of places to buy firearms but rather a lack of a place to shoot them.

The CO sales tax is a killer, though.

Yep, I'd rather order online and pay a $50 FFL transfer fee than pay 8.25% tax to the state on a $1,200 rifle...

am thinking about buying a shotgun from The Firing Line in Aurora. Anyone have direct experience with these folks? I live out of state so going there personally is not an option.

I have bought several guns at The Firing Line. Pretty good place. Their prices have gotten a lot more reasonable since the Sportsmans Warehouse and Gander Mt opened up just on the other side of the highway. The salesmen are all pretty knowledgeable and friendly. Richard, the manager,is a good guy and a real straight shooter.
BTW-they do have a range in the back of the store. You can shoot your shotty there mon. thru Thur. till 5 PM. The ventilation system however is a little lax and it can get a little smokey in there if your shooting a shotty but it's a good place to check out your gun and be sure it's working ok
FWIW--Firing Line prices are pretty much in line with Sportsmans Warehouse and both are way better than Gander Mountain

List of gun shops in order

I recently moved to Colorado and have hit up several gun shops and here are the best in order imo. These are all near the Denver area.

1. 5280 Armory. Easily the best selection since they seem to have one of everything. Their prices seem to be the lowest as well all over the board including ammo and accessories. The people working there were also very friendly and even stayed open late while we filled out background checks. They had XD's for 499-519 and XDM's for 599. Baby Eagle 45 for 549.00. I was very impressed with this shop's selection.

2. Green Mountain Guns. This little store also had very good prices but they didn't have as much of a selection as 5280 armory but they had a better used gun selection and consignment. Now don't get me wrong, their selection is still very good compared to every other store I have been to. The people here are also very friendly especially Steve.

3. Rocky Mountain Guns and Ammo . They have a decent selection and the people are also friendly and nice. Their prices seem to be higher by about $20+ on everything. Still a nice store with a decent collection of firearms.

I will continue the rest in a bit.

Hey guys! I am looking for a gun store in CO that has the gun I’m looking for in stock. I’m looking for a P239 DAK SAS, two-tone. It can be used or new.

In anyone’s perusing of the gun stores have they seen this gun on the shelf? It can be anywhere in CO.

If not no eyewitness accounts of this specific weapon, does anyone know a gun store in CO that carries a pretty large selection of Sigs that may have it?

Pico1180,
Go on GunBroker.com and do an "advanced search". You can the "search by seller". Type in "Jensen_Arms".

You can then peruse all fo their auctions. They usually carry plenty of Sigs.

You could also just google every gun shop mentioned here, and give them all a phone call asking about the gun.

Even if Jensen doesn't have it, perusing their auctions is always fun. They always have at least a few things I want. :)

Good luck.

I'll have to check out GMG...

I've lived in a few places around the Front Range over the years, and I've previously had great experiences with Specialty Sport (down in CO Springs) and Jensen's (in Loveland).

5280 Armory isn't a bad spot at all, and is here in my town. The owners are very personable, and I talk with them quite a bit when I'm in there... Good place to get an EBR, but that's about it (they run sort of a niche business, and seem to do it well with that). I have wide ranging gun interests, which means I can't find everything I want there.

I used to have great luck with Sportsman's Warehouse up at 84th and I-25, but lately they've had horrible inventory (far worse than anyone else in the metro area, at least in my opinion).

I have been a customer of Rocky Mountain Guns & Ammo in Parker for years.

The previous owner was a good man, unfortunately, he is now on to the happy hunting grounds. Over the years, I bought several shooters from him and he always was fair priced and highly knowledgeable. He sold his shop to one of his employees and his family.

I have to say that the new owners are great. In particular Brandon, who worked for the previous owner, was always great with me and now that he and his family own the store, they have been great and have been handling my transfers over the last couple of years.

I highly recommend them and will always do business with them.

I had Left Hand Canyon to myself for 3 hours today. Mountains and guns just belong together.
I'm surprised Boulder County hasn't shut down Left Hand Canyon like they did St. Vrain Canyon in Lyons.
I used to shoot at both places.

Just be glad Dave's and Dean's have closed.
Dean's if I remember was on West Colfax and I went in once with an original Springfield Trapdoor in excellent shooting condition with a mirror bore to use as trading barter. They offered me $50 trade in value (I had paid $700 for it from Cache la Poudre Rifle Works in Ft. Collins a couple months before)
That was the first and last time I had any dealings with Dean's.

I like Ross, the guy who runs GunSport in Boulder, but his prices are a little steep.
If this is the same Ross who used to work for Bighorn Trading in Boulder he is a cool guy, Likes to BS and if his prices are high will likely be willing to dicker on the price. I don't think I ever paid sticker price at Bighorn trading especially when he was working there.

My girlfriend bought her Browning High power from Jensen's and they were very friendly and treated my son who was 6 or 7 at the time real well letting him handle a few things.. Granted I have been in Montana for 10 years now and things have changed but if I ever visit Colorado again I would certainly visit these places.

The only store in Longmont is Grampa's Pawn in Longmont... I wouldnt buy a gun there on a bet.

I made the mistake of buying new handgun there once. The extractor broke on the first magazine I fired from the gun and I tried to return it the next day. I was basically told "Tough, send it to the manufacturer for repair"
This was on a brand new (not used) High Power.
This was ONE day after I bought it. I have never had a store refuse a return after they sold me a defective gun as long as it was a reasonably recent sale.
Even Wal Mart took back a Ruger that had jamming issues with no questions asked.
They lost a LOT of business as I lived in Longmont at the time. I routinely drove to Loveland, Ft Collins or Denver to do my gun business after that.
