My Favorite S&W Model

She may not be much to some people, and a lot of people think .38 Special is an underpowered wet cat sneeze, but I've carried this one with confidence, and I will do again - my 64-3.

That is definitely a Combat Masterpiece.
The Target Masterpiece has a 6 inch barrel, and I think the Target could be had with 8 3/8 inch barrel too, but I could be wrong.
Almost. The standard Target Masterpiece came with a 6” barrel. Also available was the 8 3/8” barrel. But, the Dayton Distributer for S&W had a bunch of 4” Target Masterpieces built. As did some others. In Al, I believe there were three different runs of 4” Target Masterpiece Revolvers built. And, let’s not forget the very special order 5” barreled ones.

And to really obscure issues, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (maybe some other Georgia alphabet group) had 6” barrels installed on the Combat Masterpiece!

S&W was fond of producing standard revolvers, or whatever anyone would pay to have built!

Nuh-uh. 38’s been gettin’ it done for a hundred and twenty years and it still will long after we’re gone.
My favorite book "The White Hunters" by Berne often quotes post turn-of-the-century professional hunters as "dispatching the beast with my medium revolver".......38spl.
That was lions and leopards particularly, but it was also used on larger animals in an emergency....of which there were plenty.

I like A LOT of S&W revolvers, with the 4" N SB probably being my favorites.

However, my tolerance for an underlug extends only to a 4" barrel. They look silly on anything longer. The big NO GO for me is any model with a red ramp insert. I had them replaced with night sights on my 66-2 snub and 629-0 4".

I posted previously about my Model 18/.22 Combat Masterpiece. One of the reasons I love it is the ease with which new shooters learn to use it. Yesterday Jessica, a recent college graduate and friend of our family, accompanied me to a range. Her brother had previously allowed her to shoot a semiautomatic pistol, so this was her second time firing a handgun, and her first time with a revolver. She also fired my Model 15 .38 Special, but felt more comfortable with the .22 LR. Here is her slow fire single action 5 yard target. Giving new shooters a chance to succeed helps the experience to be enjoyable, and the Model 18 did that.
