I just ordered a Dan Wesson RZ-.45 heritage. This is my first firearm and I am pumped. I chose this model over a Kimber from the input received from this forum. Thanks for the advice.

IMO, you made the right choice.

I'm sure that you will enjoy that pistol for many years.

Don't ever sell it or trade it away if you can possibly avoid it. Believe me you'll be tempted. But most long time gun owners have parted with at least one that they wish they could have back.

That's a good choice in a .45, and I don't want to throw cold water on your joy, but ......

Are you already a good pistol shot?
Learning the basics with a .45 is pretty tough.

In order to become a really good pistol shot (as opposed to being happy with an 8" group at 20 feet) you have to master trigger control, follow-through and calling your shots. It's much easier to aquire those skills if the gun you're shooting has no recoil, is super quiet and is very cheap to shoot. A pellet pistol is all those things and you can shoot it in the house. All you need for a backstop is a box of newspapers. Ammo is almost free. Pistols like the Daisy 717 are pump-up (one pump) and there's no Co2 cost. Make sure you get one with adjustable sights.

Have fun. :D

OK, then why did you?

More people than you can count have learned to shoot using a .45 ACP as the first handgun.

If the OP takes his time, get instruction if needed he will do just fine.

There's nothing wrong with a .45 for a first gun. The recoil is relative to what you are used to, it's only a lot if you have something else to compare it to. .45 has less felt recoil than a .40. A full-size 1911 soaks a lot of recoil. He'll be fine.

Congrats - excellent choice. Now, how about that CHL :) ?

Oh, and regarding this being your first gun: many of us cut our teeth on the 1911.

In my opinion it's a great gun to learn on.

Watch out, the 1911 bug may get you and you are really in for it then. Going to buy a DW Heritage soon. Just bought a Colt 1911 last weekend. ;)
