My first gun

Very nice. Many will discount the .22lr cartridge as not suitable for self defense, I am not one of them. 20 rounds coming from the Ruger should keep you safe if needed. Next comes application for a handgun permit and then application for concealed carry permit. It's the natural progression and easily part of the addiction. Congrats to you and your wife for making a wise choice. It is certainly something that will occupy your mind. Good luck to you both.

A belated welcome, and a congrats on choices for first firearm purchases. You'll undoubtedly find it can be a very fun and rewarding process. Like others mentioned SAFETY TRAINING. Your owners manuals are a good starting point, as they all outline the basics. If you commit them to memory and then to practice, that'll go a long way. Not sure if it was mentioned (and certainly don't want to insult your intelligence) invest in quality hearing protection even for shooting the .22.

Thank you! No insults here, I’m new to the hobby, looking to learn and absorb as much info as possible. Appreciate the advice!

But I did get us some good ear protection. We have both ear plugs and ear muffs. The .22 is relatively quiet, but we still wear protection regardless. We wear glasses as well when shooting.

Good choices on your 2 purchases. I, too, have both and for a fun factor, they can hardly be beat! Literally tons of upgrades for the 10/22 and more every day for the PC9. As others have said, a red dot sight for them, especially the PC9 brings it to a new level. You don`t have to spend your next paycheck for a good red dot sight although you could spend upwards of $5-600 easily enough if you wanted. I have a Sig Sauer Romeo 5 on my Draco and a Bushnell TRS 25 on my PC9 and neither one costs more than $140. Surf around on the web and you can find some pretty good deals on them.
Check YouTube for Paul Harrel and Hickok45 and you`ll soon bookmark them both. Good info there. Congrats on your new hobby...Good on `ya!

Oops, thought I`d read all the posts but clearly didn`t. Red dots are good tools...

Many have already gave solid advise, but I'll say just use the rules of safety always, know your local laws on self defense heaven forbid you ever are placed in a bad situation, and right now we are in the midst of a gun panic buying situation given the COVID and civil unrest of late so unfortunately inventory on guns and ammo is low and prices rising, even .22 ammo is becoming scarce so get as much as you can now because it may be months or possibly years before availability becomes normal again.

ammoseek.com , everyday supply becomes less and less.

How do you like the Bushnell? I was going to get that one but read that the more recently produced ones weren’t as good. If yours is good maybe I’ll give it a try on the PC Carbine.

I’ve already spent countless nights lying on the couch watching Paul Harrell and hickok45 haha! Great sources for info!

I hope all I ever do is fire at targets, but it’s good to know we have some means to protect ourselves if necessary. The recent riots and backlash against the police really highlight how important the 2nd amendment really is.

Ive got about 2500 rounds of .22LR but low on 9mm. It’s hard to find right now. I just grab a few boxes here and there when I can.

I too have owned a Bushnell trs-25 red dot. Worth looking into if you need a second one. Good value. .22lr and 9mm are dried up at my lgs. Buy what you can! Next you'll get into reloading. Which saves you zero money, you just get to shoot more lol.

Most of us hope we are never put in a bad situation. Which situational awareness is as important as being armed. A gun won't help if you are caught off guard.

To get serious a moment.

My advice for home defense. If ever you believe you have a intruder...

If all loved ones are counted for stay in your bedroom, call police, shout out loud "I have a gun!, the police are on the way, go away!". If the intruder chooses to enter your room, well then it is your decision what comes next. Leave the phone call to 911 active, let it be recorded, don't ever say things like "I'll kill you" or some other hostile kind of remark, let it be recorded because if you DO have to defend yourself the courts and police will have to review it, and you don't want to look like you were looking for a fight. Don't say anything to the cops when they arrive, tell them you will be happy to help once you speak to a lawyer. Let the cops know where you are in the home, it may be a good idea to let them know where a key is or throw it outside the window so they can get in.

If you have family you need to secure in various areas of the home it becomes even more dangerous, because a intruder can get the drop on you as you sweep your home. Use trigger control, you will be scared, adrenaline will be rushing, it might be the middle of the night you are half asleep or maybe you had a party earlier with friends, a 5 pound trigger pull becomes nothing with all this, too many times a person has shot a loved one thinking it was a intruder as they swept and secured their home.

Regarding outside the home if you carry, we are recently seeing reports of people pulling guns at parking lots, or outside homes against angry people, know your local laws on defense, or you might go to jail.

The TRS 25 is a good red dot which has worked well so far. It`s on par with the Sig Sauer Romeo 5 although it doesn`t have the auto-on feature that the Sig has but a good value nonetheless.
I did remove it once and later put it back on without any noticeable shift in the point of impact. YMMV

On the Ruger 9mm carbine,
even if you do not own a Glock and have Glock mags, after market Glock mags are much cheaper than Ruger mags, so I put the Glock mag well insert in mine.

Seems to work just fine and the mags are say about $13-16 instead of $30 for Ruger mags.

Cleaned my 10/22 today. First time cleaning a gun ever. Watched some videos on YouTube and read the manual. It wasn’t horribly dirty, only 300 rounds or so, but did have some crud in there. Used some CLP to clean it up. Put it all back together and everything seems to function properly. Won’t be shooting again until next weekend possibly. Next time I should be able to do it a little faster.

That's a sweet looking side by side cdahl. Does it have screw-in choke tubes or are the barrels "pre-set" for certain choking? Is it referred to as a "coach gun" because it looks like it is fairly short (see below). If pre-set, what are the barrels actually marked?
I'm curious as I bought an old Stevens (circa 1960) in the late 80s and it was pre-set so I had it bored out and put in screw-in tubes as I use this gun for hunting as well as home defense.

Its a stoeger coach gun, 20” barrels, fixed chokes. One tube is improved cylinder the other is modified. The supreme model has screw in chokes but it was $100 more and figured I didn’t really need that. Of course I really didn’t need the gun itself either haha!

The Uplander is the longer version with 26” barrels. This one has the shorter 20” barrels.

Even with only 2 shots, the combo of those chokes and the short barrels will make that a good home defense gun. With double triggers, you can fire both barrels, creating a devastating blast. Then, just drop that shottie and pull your handgun and take on any other invaders.

The unlit persuasion in a shotgun barrel speaks loudly!

This one uses a bullhorn...

And it works better than my over/under for clay, too.:)

Welcome to the hobby!
