Ok, no laughing, but before I begin, let me state that I know very little about these rifles... Saturday I went out and purchased this particular example. As I was looking at the various examples, I was taught how to load and unload the rifle using the clip provided. I looked around and am unable to find any ammo. I am sure I'll have more questions regarding the M1, but for now, I will just post the pics.

This is my first older rifle, so go easy on me....

Looks great, some day ill join the M1 club, some day.

ammo = CMP. Where did you find it? Gun show, Pawn shop ect. Nice looking Garand. Im not sure. But i think you can have it smithed so it will be safe to shoot modern .06 ammo. RC. MODEL would know for sure.

Nice looking rifle. Ammo shoot surplus M2 ball, Handload using special "M1 Garand recepies" or if you want to shoot commercial ammo get an adjustable gas plug (I use the Schuester product). Again, you have a nice looking rifle do some research on them you can learn a lot just using the search funtion here.

Nice - looks like a Special Grade - is it?

Yup, except I personally don't shoot an adjustable gas plug.

ammo = CMP

Yup. I was at the CMP North store, and picked up 240 rounds for $95. On the CMP site I believe that all that is available is 192 rounds for $75. The South store is in Anniston Al. I don't know how far that is from you, but you can walk out with 10 cases if you haven't purchased any from them this year. Mail order will be much slower (think Christmas, if not after.)

Also, Hornady is now making M1 safe ammo, but it's pricey. Not what I would want to use for plinkin.

Thanks for the comments.

What feature(s) will make a particular M1 Garand desirable? How can I tell when the gun was manufactured? All I really know about this is that is it is a Springfield GI model. Can anyone else tell me anything about this particular gun?

the best thing to do is go purchase some books about the M1 Garand, I picked up a few and found out why my M1 has a Winchester receiver and everything else (and possibly the wood) is Springfield. Most books will also give you a serial number list and the dates they where manufactured (ex. serial numbers 1234567-2345678- march 1943). These books will also tell you a lot about "special"/ "desirable" M1's.

Scott Duff has some good books about the M1.

Nice job! Looks like a brand new Springfield Armory M1
BTW, you unload the rifle by pulling the trigger. :neener:

Beautiful rifle! I have a Field Grade CMP mid-50's Springfield that ain't much to look at but might be the best shooting weapon I own. In great mechanical shape, very accurate, GREAT trigger, must have seen very light use if any (though the stock tells a VERY different story). I have really come to love my M1 for its practical attributes.

Now I want one that's pretty!!

Great looking rifle. Welcome to the club. Mine is a '43 Field grade Springfield. As others have said, CMP Greek ammo is the way to go. Get your paperwork in ASAP as there is no telling when the supply of HXP will be exhausted.

Go to Yahoo search or google an type in M1 Garand Born on Date

You'll find the date your M1 was made.

Nice looking Garand by the way.

Clint Eastwood is great
Nice Garand!

I don't own a m1 yet its on the list hopefully soon I'll find the one have a great time shootin her

Nice gun! Show us a picture of the back of the receiver and the cartouche so we can tell a little more about it.

"Get off my lawn."

Yeah, he was good in that movie but he took the wrong gun outside for the drive-by. Had he taken the M1 and an maybe an extra clip he could have planted the white car and all it's occupants on the spot.

Pull the bolt back, and lock it. Now look at the right side of the barrel that you can now see. You will find the manufacturer and month and year it was made. (of the barrel, not the whole rifle)

You really need to buy one of Scott Duff's books. Half the fun of M1s is learning about them.

Did you mean to say that you don't use an adjustable gas plug?

Yup.

I don't use one because I only shoot surplus, or "Garand safe" reloads. Thanks for making me clarify that, and sorry for any confusion.

I do have to say though, if I run across one on the range, I might shoot it. :what: Kidding...

is it a new(er) production garand? it looks like ti may be one of the springfield armory garands that they stpped making a few years back.

if you look at the serial number it will say springfield armory with a trademark symbol if it does its a newer production not a usgi
