I would like a bolt action...the problem with the .308 semi auto battle rifles is that I live in california which basically means buying an M1A or a modified FN-FAL. Neither of which can be realistically obtained for less than $1400. Everything else is classified as an assault weapon

Dang, partner, I wish I'd have followed the thread a bit futher. Sorry about the California thing, man. Wouldn't wish that on my brother-in-law.

So...forget the first part of that post. The 788 with a bit of modding might still work, though.

@joab: If they're coming through CMP, then that makes sense. CMP has an exemption to the Lend/Lease issue, as I understand it. They did indeed re-import Danish and Greek issue M1s recently. I'll have to keep an eye on that. Bit of bad luck for Kahr/AO if it's true, isn't it?

Mr. V, seems you're getting a lot of good info here.

I'll still be stubborn and stick to my initial recc: CMP Rack-Grade M1. Without rebarelling it, you can still put a few hundred rounds of surplus 30-06 through it to see if you like, no need to rebarrel right away.

After shooting a can of 30-06 and thinking on it for a month or two, you can either rebarrel or easily sell it for more than you bought it for.

Or if you're leaning more bolt, the Savage 110 seems like a great deal. Folks say great things about them on the board, and I really liked the one I shot.

Either option would get you a great firearm, with zero extra gunsmithing on the Savage, and maybe a couple hundred a few months down the road if you don't want to leave the Garand in 30-06. Even a rebarreled Garand costs half what an M1A does.

Tough decisions, no? I look forward to hearing what you end up getting. Take care,
