I already filed a report with the local LEOS. The worst thing is it happened it my house today no more than a few hours ago.

I know who stole it because he was the only person in the room when it happened. My mother had hired him to close up a hole in the wall. He went in, Supposedly went to go use the restroom but went outside instead of the restroom in the house.

My father and me was coming back and I heard half my family yelling at us that my gun was stolen by him.

No body was in the room with him.....It was there one hour before I left and I come back and its not there in its holster but the extra mag was.

He kept saying he never took it or anything like that but the door where the gun was had been opened when we always have it closed.

Im not gonna lie. Im freaked and scared and ashamed for not taking care of my gun better.

Whats the chance of recovery really? Only is used in a crime or sold in a pawn shop etc? I don't really know what else to do. As I said already talked to the cops out here...

"The 11th Commandment" ... you broke it:

"Thou shalt not tempt weaker brethren." Gospel According to Dao. File a report with all witnesses signing on, and hope a lot.

These things unfortunately happen. Don't beat yourself up and don't let anyone else do that either. If you have the serial, give it to the cops (of course) and perhaps go to your local and less than local pawn shops...They have no interest in purchasing stolen goods as they have to forfeit the sale (legally speaking). The only problem I could see is if they simply refuse to buy it and let the guy go on his way. Perhaps the cops could be helpful in this matter if they are of the useful sort. Being really really nice to them goes a long way.

Go here - http://www.atf.gov/about/foia/ffl-list.html - download the list for your state, and find the FFL's who are closest to you. Call them with the make/model/serial # of your gun, tell them it was stolen, and there is a reward for it.

While many jurisdictions have guns turned in at pawn shops run through NCIC (local LE does this for them), the same is not true for FFL's with dealer and manufacturer licenses. Unfortunately we could easily purchase and resell a stolen gun and never know it.

Seed, I am definetly going to the pawn shops tommorow and I am definetly calling as many ffls I can. I had make model and serial. Lucky me I had that stuff hidden some.

Bubbles, Thanks for the list.

Zundfolge,.....I am not NRA member....I wish i woulda known little things like that tho....

If you have the make model and SN you can most likely make a claim against your homeowners insurance even if you are not an NRA member.

It does give every one a reminder to have that M/M/SN info stashed somewhere it will not be taken too. Like me, mine (photos too) are on my laptop...oops, what get's stolen most????

No body was in the room with him.....It was there one hour before I left and I come back and its not there in its holster but the extra mag was.

What did the cops say? If you're sure it was there an hour before, they need to take that seriously and talk to this worker again.

I have had 2 guns stolen in my entire life. The first one, I called the police. The officer that came out asked me what I expected him to do about it. I told him I was really just trying to be a good citizen and he was actually okay with that. And thinking about it, I don't have a problem with his response.

The second one was stolen by a brother-in-law; he claimed there was a break-in at the house but the only thing that was missing was a little Ortigies .32 that I had well hidden. I don't know how he knew about the gun because I don't think he'd ever seen it. This was 25 or so years ago- if I'd have caused a problem about it my sister & my Dad would have considered me the bad guy. The BIL has been dead for about 10 years, and good riddance. I don't usually say things like that about the dead, but he was a bad man in a lot of other ways.

Point is, make a police report and consider it a lesson.

NJG33, He had told me what I wanna do with him? I told him I wanted the truth and my gun back. I couldnt really do anything due to the lack of evidence cause no one had seen him take it.

I know it was him for sure tho.

BigN, He said that...get a gun safe.

Kurt, He didnt ask me that, Instead he asked about the gun where it was and if I was sure. Which I am still very sure of.

Best part is he wants to come back tomorrow and wants to break down his work and take it with him because he didnt get payed...

Dude that stinks. I keep several records in differant places with the make/model/ser.# along with photos. I hope it wasn't an expensive gun. I wonder what would happen when he comes back tomarrow to get his tools, ect. and they were gone? Maybe they got stolen? Humm.

Please don't be insulted, as I don't know your family, but I know from experience that just because someone is family doesn't mean they have your best interests in mind. You say "half your family" was yelling at you that he stole it. Who is this extra family besides you and your parents? Any chance one of your family members may be the culprit and made this guy out to be the scapegoat? Your mom or dad care that you have a gun, or are they anti-gun?

Like I said, I don't know you or your family from adam, but I have had similar experiences. It's easy to overlook those close to you.

Roadchoad, I understand very well what you mean and I am not insulted one bit. No one in my family is Anti-Gun. I do know my whole family and by half the family I meant the rest being that only my father and me where the only one gone at the time.
Rest of the family was 3 brothers, 1 sister and mother.

I have absolutely no reason to believe they took it at all. They have their own. Well, For those who can own one anyways ( due to age nothing else ) Plus, He was the only person in the room at the time, He had gone in then went outside rather quickly to take a leak but it seemed odd because we let him use the bathroom in the house.

As soon as he seen me and my father coming back he made a very quick turn around.

Also, I had the LEOS call to me not to long ago. They were doing a follow up and also letting me know that I can get a copy of the report and go to the magistrate court and see about a hearing for a warrant to search his place.

Please keep us up to date with what happens. I've always had bad daydreams of losing ones weapons and cant imagine how frustrating it is. Stay strong man and kudos for knowing the serial #.

BigBayou, I will tell you what it feels like. Im very nervous. I have not slept well at all. The first day, I did not sleep all night and have a hard time sleeping so far.

This was like a wake up call for me. I have my shotgun loaded and another hand gun loaded that stays by me. Im still freaked out from it. It's not a good feeling what so ever.
Funny thing is, That worker never came back to pick up his work he had done. Funny isnt it?

@Josh45

After reading this I feel lucky that anyone who has worked on my home I know personally. (partially because I live in a rural area) If they were to steal a gun from anyone in my family they would answer to my grandfather and father, both of which have trusted friends in the local LE. Was the gun out in the open, within plain sight?

Dreamcast, It was on the top shelf where you could grab it but there where things around it to block from view. I have no idea how long he had been in the room but when I went there to see it I seen just the holster with the extra mag.
The feeling is gut wrenching.

It will normally not show up at a pawn shop because they have to enter the info in a computer data base that the cops supposedly check. Thieves know this usually. Serial numbers for our weapons in such circumstances are very important for recovery.

I did not read the whole thread maybe this was mentioned before, if so, sorry for the repeat.

Sorry for your loss and I hope you get your gun back soon. Think of it as a good learning experience if nothing else, one lesson being that a safe, even a cheapo, is a must-have. Had you had the pistol in a safe you would have some pretty good evidence that he broke into it or you would have seen him carrying the thing out. Mine is a pretty cheap in-wall safe. I think it cost me about $50. I'm sure someone could break into it fairly easily if they were able to find it in the first place, but if it were a worker and I was in the house I would hear them for sure. It would be a decent fix if you, like me, couldn't afford a $1,000 safe at the moment.

Sky, No it wasn't mentioned but we all know it in the back of our heads. I wont be suprised if its on a table right now with some crack and cash with a bunch of BG.

Dcdub, I have to get another one now even if it is a cheapo and I am definetley getting a safe. At least it will be better protected for that matter. You mind linking me to the safe you got? Im definetly open to options after this.

All I can say is guys, Make sure you know where your gun is. Hide it well if your not gonna carry it. A safe is very good idea no matter how you look at it.

In case you guy's might have been wondering, or dont know it was a Taurus 24/7 Pro in a 45 caliber.

Sorry to hear the news, it's a horrible feeling having stuff stolen. How did the phone calls go with the ffls? Also you might want to advertise a reward on the local bulletin boards and such.

Good luck getting the guns back. I had a burglary a few years ago, lost some guns and power tools (nice ones), called the police and made a report, and the officer told me I'd probably never see the stuff again. He said most times the thief will sit at a gas station until a tradesman drives up, the BG will walk up and say he's out of gas and money, and ask the tradesman if he wants to get a good deal on some tools or guns for cash so he can get back home. The buyer deep down inside knows they are stolen but will often buy them anyway. They know better than to go to a pawn shop now.
