I was always wondering how the folks here who make their own BP could compare. Shipping the stuff becomes the issue and travel can be vast. I was watching "Storage Wars" and a gal found a strange pistol. It turned out it was a device that measured the pressure from the BP. I've seen similar for cannons but they are like mini-mortars. Now i'm wondering if any one out there knows about these, knows someone with one or has one so that we may judge each others endeavors. But I'm pretty dern certain the my BP can beat up your BP!

You mean something like this?

You must search thru some auction sites - US, UK, German... But in the most part those "testers" are one of a kind - you can use it for testing different batches, or swap it between yourself and other enthusiasts. Don't expect that several people can own exactly the same model black powder tester. And they are somewhat pricey, so...

Well, it appears that "Dixie" sells a modern replica - $185: http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product_info.php?products_id=17354

I've always tested mine in a 12 inch copper trough nailed to a board against some Goex and tried to match speeds.

Gotta find some better wood to make charcoal. Been using scraps from a local lumber yard and pallets.

How does yours compare to Swiss or Olde Eynsford?

I don't know! I make mine because I make cannons and they use a lot of the ole BP so making my own made sense. I make 2.2Kg at a time. I corn it to cannon but I get powder that made me think I should expand my BP arms. So I bought a flinter pistol. I was just always interested in how mine would compare to other folks efforts. Please do not take my title of my BP being able to beat up anybody's seriously. I make my own cannon balls and just have a lot of fun. yer all welcome to come over any time! There are some 53 species of willow and they all do well in BP Mnfg. -as far as I know! - Black willow has been touted as one of the best. I can help you make charcoal really easy, quick and cheep.

I did chrono speed tests mine against swiss..it was just slightly slower than swiss...that batch anyway...chrony no lie! Gotta video layin around somewhere...lol

If I remember Mr. brushhippie, you puc your BP? IF so, what do you believe this adds to the BP? I don't as I burn it by the pound. However, I have made pucing [sic?] molds for a few folks. I believe I stole the idea from you, or a friend of yours.

Hope we helped ya! Yes...the last test was pucked...and I do prefer it...why it is cleaner I do not know..and it may be co inky dink...but my fastest powder was corned.

While I got ya here... the puck molds I made are 3". However, how wet, how much, how much pressure and for how long are questions of which I do not know the answer. Suggestions?

I do about 5/16" thick pucks..they need to be pressed at like 1800 pounds ( I have done it under a heavy vehicle with a floor jack) for a minute or so...and I just wet it enough where it balls up in your fist.
