While it's wrong what he did, it wasn't illegal. Your wife gave him consent to search, so your consent was irrelevant, since she had possession of the premises, legally and rightfully (and the key). The problem is that the wife most likely felt intimidated and coerced and gave consent as a result....she says she was "forced" - I doubt it - more likely what happened is what always happens - the nosy cop says "Now you don't mind if I look in here, DO YOU?" Assumptive close, with the implication that you're doing something wrong if you don't consent. The correct answer is almost always, "No, thank you." But most honest people feel obligated to say yes, so they do. She gave consent, end of story (legally speaking). But that's an a-hole cop for you, for sure.
