My lost gun story

Not gun related but similar so I'll throw it out. It's been almost 50 years ago, I was in junior high and playing with model airplanes. I set a model engine on mom's car and she went to town and back and it was still there

It can happen... Regards the cyclist not touching it. I might hesitate to touch a unknown gun I find by side of road. It MIGHT have been tossed by someone who used it in a crime. It MIGHT have fingerprints that I might mess up.
Just think of the fun if it was used to kill a local and there you are holding the murder weapon>>>>. Mark it and call the local police (who will likely pick it up/handle it but at least I didn't mess things up.
In a store bathroom/other I wouldn't worry but middle of nowhere. I would hope I would take pics with cell phone(and try to get serial number if possible) but not touch it (unless I felt there was chance of children in area)
I lost a gun helping bale hay. It was a new (outdoor) holster and between the rocking trailer/piling bales I realized the holster was light. Couple hundred yrs back lay my revolver. No damage except to my heart when I realized holster was empty.

Never with a gun, but I once left an expensive Hoyt bow leaning against the back of my truck and drove off without it. I got home and realized what I did and went back to look for it. Luckily I found it right where I left it and it wasn't damaged at all, but the 20 mile drive back to where I was hunting really sucked.

In case of the boogy man

I literally fell out of the chair laughing when I read your line where you set it on top of the car just "in case of the boogy man".....:) AND my gun fell out of my holster when I got up.........just kidding.

Good lesson learned story! Thanks for sharing it with us.

Yup, BTDT too. Whilst doin' the four wheelin' in the sandy river bottom I got out to hear the call of nature and put my BRAND NEW Browning Hi-power 9mm on the roof. The darn thing was heavy and would make my pants fall completely down, so I took it out of its holster. Jumped back in the truck and gassed it and went on having fun till I realized it was ON THE ROOF ! I finally found it completely buried in fine sand, yards away from original stop. I cleaned it as best as I knew at the time but it never was the same after that. Sold it !

Thank God it was found by someone responsible. I'm sure you have beaten yourself up adequately -- I get a sick feeling in my stomach just thinking about it.

That is the exact reason that I have NEVER permitted DH or anyone I was with to set an infant seat on the roof or trunk when opening the car and making ready. I knew that one time we'd be tired, distracted, stressed, etc. and something awful would happen. And late one night the diaper bag took a ride on the roof for over a mile.

May I suggest looking into a holster that is more comfortable when driving for use on long trips?

Did you know?... That all trees look alike when you're trying to remember which one you leaned your squirrel rifle against. Took me a good 20 minutes or so to find it. Didn't get any squirrels, scared them all away with the cussing.

Not gun related, but topical…

Back in the early 80’s, before cell phones and before I had an ATM card, I left my wallet on top of a pay phone outside of a 7-11. It was a Friday night, I had just been paid and the wallet was stuffed with $600 in cash. I didn’t realize what I had done for about a half an hour, after I attempted to pay for a beer at a nearby bar.

I quickly remembered where I last had my wallet, and raced back to the pay phone. The wallet wasn’t there. I figured I would be begging for meals the next two weeks as I went into the store to see if maybe someone had turned it in.

I asked the clerk if anyone had seen my missing wallet, she reached under the counter and pulled it out, asked my name, checked the ID, and handed me my wallet with everything still in it.

This took place on a fairly urban stretch of S. Broadway in Englewood, CO. …there are still some honest people in the world.

OMG! That must have happened in a different era! The denizens of that area now would fight over it and tear it to shreds.

FWIW - I've been known to find wallets and purses, and make every effort to find the owner, never have kept one. Just raised that way.
