UH! NO Harmon Rabb,

I don't spend my money on new Smith and Wessons, they're simply not worth the money they ask for them...Smith relies on their name and has been putting out sub-par guns for way too long.

They better get up off their laurels "ass' and start making decent firearms again or they will wind up where all the other "has been" companies found themselves...in the junk pile.

I own many Smith revolvers, none newer than the 1970's and that's by design.
So you buy your Smith and I just may buy that new Sturm Ruger!

Settle down there, hoss. I happen to own 4 rugers and 0 smiths. I've just read a lot about the new E-series and supposedly they're light years better than the old smith 1911's, with excellent fit and finish. Haven't held one myself, but have read a lot of reports on them. They may very well have got off their laurels in this case.

^ Seems like comparing apples and WAAAAY more expensive apples.

Smith 1911E series is a MSRP $1200-$1300 gun, the Ruger is an MRSP $800 gun.

I been waiting for the Ruger make this gun, I will buy. Ruger quality and price just cant be beat it will be another fine gun to own.

Thank you very very much for the excellent review and great photographs. This was better than any magazine review. I wish there was a website that did firearm reviews of this quality.

What will Ruger & Gunsite come out with next? I like the look of this 1911, and like the Ruger Scout also. Perhaps an 870 clone with several extras?

But they don't sell for that.

A little more than the Ruger, but well under 1K, and I bet a fellow could beat GB. I believe both companies will sell a lot of each.

You're listing a street price there. When shopping for your best deal (which can often be found at Gunbroker or Buds), it's pretty much a good rule of thumb to plan on a street price of 75% of MSRP. A $1200 MSRP on the S&W puts it at $900 street with that formula - not too far off of the $830 you're listing.

The $800 MSRP on the Ruger under the same formula puts it closer to $600 street. I have no doubt that (at least after the initial excitement subsides), we'll see this gun in the $550-625 range. Though as I said in another post, there certainly wasn't any shortage of 1911 buying options, I think Ruger will do EXTREMELY well with this product offering. They're offering an American made 1911 with almost all the standard trimmings that people want on a 1911, at a price point just barely above the foreign produced ones. Tack on brand recognition, and they'll move mountains of them.

I think this will be a hit. The quality, so far at least, looks like it will be on par with guns that sell for a couple hundred dollars more. It also will persuade people who would have gotten a RIA or similar entry level gun to spend a bit more for a much nicer gun.

Even with all the other manufacturers, there isn't really anything at the quality for the price.

I'll bet it's a well made gun....I just wish that billboard on the slide were someway different. I don't find it all that attractive.

I don't find the slide obtrusive at all. The eagle emblem on one side and "Ruger Made in USA" on the other is a lot less than other 1911s have written on them.

Of course, I'll only remember to read the manual when holding the gun upside down.

I just spoke to the guy at the Guns section of the BX (here at Dyess AFB) and he said they'll be selling them for $630(tax free, as usual)... i think i'll get on a waiting list with them.
