I have an older Rockchucker that I have recently "re-discovered". I have it set up for Hornady LNL and couldn't be happier with it. Except- friggin decapped primers go everywhere! Yeah, the vacuum makes short work of it, but has anyone got tips on how to stop or limit this? Besides upgrading to a Redding Boss II

put a piece of folded up paper or something like that behind the top of the primer catcher so that when the ram is all the way up it touches the side of it. Thats all you have to do and it will catch 99%. Every now and then you'll get a stray bouncer that hits the bottom of the catch pans but thats it.

I have moved the decapping pin up and down til I get the primers to fall right down the ram and not bump on the press. Seemed to work for me. Still get a few escapees but not too many.

Take a drinking straw that is slightly larger in diameter than the slot in the ram the priming arm goes into. Cut the straw at an angle matching the outside of the ram and just long enough to fit inside the slot without interfering with the ram's travel, and press it into place, with the flat portion of the straw immediately under the shell holder. This will direct the spent primers into the tray, but you'll have to remove the straw to prime on the press.

I do brass in large batches and clean all primer pockets, so this isn't a problem for me. When I prime on the press, I just remove the straw for that operation, and put it back when I'm done. Or I use a Ram Prime unit.

Hope this helps.

Fred

The straw worked great I had one in my soda. I pushed the straw up into the shell holder and cut it at the bottom. I raised my ram slid the shell holder and straw into place. I deprimed several cases worked like a charm TY ReloaderFred.

The modifacation works great no more flying primers

I made a little deflecter shield pattern out of cardboard a couple of years ago to try it out.
Planned to make the final one out of aluminum.

But this one worked so good I never got a Round-Tuit.

I thought that primer spitting feature was designed into the green machine on purpose. Supposed to be used for keeping us reloaders in shape by bending over to chase those little rascals when they escape. :D

Yeah. Get a little Lee "Reloader" press and a Lee Universal decapping die and quit doing primer work on the RC. I did that, mounted it and bored a 3/4' hole under the little press' primer catcher chamber, then mounted a clear pill bottle under the hole to catch and contain the caps. Works so great I got a second "Reloader", mounted it beside the first and put a Lee Auto Prime II on it for re-capping. Love that system! And the ram on my RC doesn't get gritted up with primer residue.

You can make one of the paper shield devices and won't lose many spent caps ... until you remove the plastic catcher/tray.

Primers on the floor is the primary reason I am using a Redding T-7. Primers go through the ram, out a tube, into a bottle I put on the end of the tube.

I know my bench is a mess Fred. It sits in my dinning room in the corner. I'm single so I get to do that. The plus I have a 17 yo daughter when she brings a BF over first thing he sees is a reloading bench full, and game mounts on the walls.

Copy rc's pic & template his design - I have one almost identical (made from sheet aluminum) that I have used since we switched over from black powder to smokeless. It probably ought to be replaced by a simple cardboard version as I beat it flat & re-shape it every time, but it's kind of like an old shoe except it doesn't stink  One day soon (when the price of scrap brass hits $1000/lb) I'll truck all those old primers I've saved over to the scrap metal place & retire on the proceeds... :D

look for a burr in the ram. Mine had a big one . once i broke it off by shoving a q-tip down there it has worked much better

I just gave up and bought a Lee Reloader Press and a Univeral Decapping Die, I mounted the press on a table drilled a small hole under the press and ran a pvc tube from there to a 2 liter drink bottle. I just use the press to deprime and my spent primers collect in the bottle, ready to go to the recycle yard.

TigerBite,

I'm in Mississippi visiting my dad for his 91st birthday. When my daughter was dating, I always seemed to be cleaning guns when a new date arrived for the first time. Don't remember how it worked out that way, but it was effective.

When I get home later this week I'll have to work on cleaning up my bench, since I've got a lot of reloading to catch up on when I get back.

The straw trick works really well, and is cheap and simple. The Rockchucker is a good press and will always have a place on my bench, along with the Hollywood and LNL.

ROFL. Love that idea, I might do that on purpose. :D
