Well his little folder came back today which is the normal correspondence with the parents. There was no note, my wife says it normally takes a few days for her to respond. We'll see I guess.

Wait a couple of days? You got me on the edge of my seat!! Oh well, I should be used to it. TV does the same thing with their commercials... :)

Social Services

Yes social services can and will be monsters on this stuff, many rebels looking for a cause. Knowledge is power when it comes to dealing with social services and it's a pain staking but it will benefit you and reduce any legal cost associated with it. My wife is an MSW with a bunch of other initials that I don't understand behind her name, except for FFL. I've seen how the system works and how you can make it work for you. Either way, it's a hassle you don't need. I still think you letter was excellant with the except that I would of said "firearm, not weapon" It took me a long time to break that habit when I retired for the Corps.

I hope social services and the school don't make your life a living hell. I've heard of parents being targeted by social services, and kids being labeled a potential threat and forced into restricted classrooms, all for something they did legally and safely with family.

I always loved the "Mind your own business" reply.
Schools are over extending their reach.
I can't wait till its my turn for my kids at school.

Nice response, OP! Needed an appropriate photo though.

And it's JMHO, but the boy's 7? High time for him to get some actual hands-on experience!

Well put! It's carefully, maturely worded letters such as this that have a much better effect than a off the cuff rant filled with expletatives and negative remarks.

Guys, you might want to back down on some of the rhetoric. Teachers and medical professionals are required by law in many states to report unusual bruising to authorities even though the source of the injury may be perfectly innocent.

It's all well and good to complain about the "Nanny State" and meddling bureaucrats, but Nanny keeps records of every action and she is the one to determine whether the case is open or closed, not you. And, depending on the state, Nanny can put a black mark on you so that you'll never get a "proceed" again.

Some years ago, a somewhat unbalanced neighbor told CPS that my wife and I beat our older son with a 2x4. We went through the whole investigation even though my son had no evidence of mistreatment and he told the case worker the allegation was untrue. We weren't allowed to be present when our son was "interviewed." They also interviewed his teachers, which made the teachers concerned about us. The case was resolved and closed "with no action taken" within a couple of days. Since the agency will not identify the person who filed the original complaint, we had no recourse against the nutcase. She can't even get in trouble for filing a false report.

And this was in Texas. Who knows how crazy it might be somewhere else.

Well said Navy

My fear / concern / experience has been that many teachers are giving thier
opinion to the kids on topics that they shouldnt

Opinions on guns, religion, politics, Tree hugging, etc, etc.

Just teach my kids the 3 "r's

(Which they ARENT doing so well)

Leave the personal opinions out of it

There are subjects where discussion of religion and politics are relevant. Social studies and history are impossible to study without touching on religion and politics. Even some art and literature requires some background into the social/political/religious aspects of the society it was created in. I expect science teachers to cover environmental issues.

The anti-education people oppose programs like Eddie Eagle and prefer abstinence-only education.

Well, I replaced weapon with firearm and didn't change anything else...
"Wisdom is in a multitude of counselors" ??

I mean no offense, but with all the feedback (some of which was very consistent) you chose to change one word.

I liked the letter. It was a lot better than I did a few years back when I got the call from an 8th grade principle. After a three day weekend, the teacher (wasting time, instead of teaching) had each of the kids stand up and talk about something special they did with their family over the holiday. Well, even at 13, my daughter had a pretty good wit. She stood up and ask the teacher if she was supposed to lie, or tell the truth. Teacher declared it was wrong to lie, but apparently did not like the story about her shooting a suppressed AR-15 at water bottles and exploding targets.:what:

I was nowhere near as elegant as the OP on the phone call or in the LONG letter that I wrote to the school board.

Hope you don't mind ...
I copied it just incase (and likely will) need to respond to a teachers questions about guns ... my daughter, 10 years old started on a Cricket rifle when she was 7 ... an old Sears Ranger single shot when she was 8 (outgrew the Cricket) ... graduated to my Marlin 39A when she was 9 and now claims my SiG-522 :what:

Yeah, but he changed the most important word, the smoking gun if you will. ;)

Doing so will probably keep Child Protection stormtroopers out of his family's life.

My, how times have changed.

I remember when the upper classmen (small town and country boys) at my high school used to bring their shotguns to school several times a month--boxes of shells too. Nobody was scared to see this for we knew that activity clubs (one being the rod and gun club) met after school. I've talked to other guys from my high school era whose school was in a little more of a rural setting than mine who used to shoot at school. They'd throw clays outback during activity hour while school was in session. Regards,

Nail

Ain't multiculturalism great?
I hope you're aware that there's more involved to their religion than just wearing a towel on his head and carrying a dull piece of metal.
Careful, your ethnocentrism is showing.

It better be very dull, or else if I lived in that school district I'd never allow them to push the zero tolerance bologna again.

Looks like the Child Protection stormtroopers took NavyGuy and his misguided family away to an anti-2nd amendment rights reeducation camp.
