In all the threads on this topic over the years, I've observed the same themes raised...
1. What inexpensive and readily replaceable firearm should I keep in the vehicle, because I am worried about theft of either my vehicle or the gun?
2. What rugged and durably finished firearm should I keep in the vehicle, because I am worried about temperature extremes, humidity, and hard knocks?
3. What firearm will work best in a scenario that likely involves shooting into or out of vehicles?
For me, #3 takes precedence. If I'm driving, it's fairly likely that my need for a weapon may involve a requirement to penetrate vehicles.
For that, I'm going with a platform and caliber that maximizes penetration through auto bodywork & glass. To me, that indicates a long gun. If limited by circumstance to a handgun...then controllable loads using heavier bullets in .41 Magnum , .357 Magnum, or .40 S&W.
Almost any firearm will do, but it might be worth considering your weapon's ability to defeat the most likely cover present and still penetrate the target.
