Need a car gun

In all the threads on this topic over the years, I've observed the same themes raised...

1. What inexpensive and readily replaceable firearm should I keep in the vehicle, because I am worried about theft of either my vehicle or the gun?

2. What rugged and durably finished firearm should I keep in the vehicle, because I am worried about temperature extremes, humidity, and hard knocks?

3. What firearm will work best in a scenario that likely involves shooting into or out of vehicles?

For me, #3 takes precedence. If I'm driving, it's fairly likely that my need for a weapon may involve a requirement to penetrate vehicles.

For that, I'm going with a platform and caliber that maximizes penetration through auto bodywork & glass. To me, that indicates a long gun. If limited by circumstance to a handgun...then controllable loads using heavier bullets in .41 Magnum :), .357 Magnum, or .40 S&W.

Almost any firearm will do, but it might be worth considering your weapon's ability to defeat the most likely cover present and still penetrate the target.

Personally, I would keep the firearm on my person. Accidents happen and guns go missing afterwards. Vehicles are broken into and I would not sleep knowing my pistol was outside in my truck all the time. That said, it's your call. I would have the best firearm I could afford for this application. Why should it be a lesser quality gun than what I would normally carry? Because it might go missing? Remember..either drive or shoot, not both.

I'd personally go with the Sigma, the only weakness is the trigger and guns.com just posted an article about an easy fix for that.

I'll stop leaving a gun in my vehicle when open carry becomes legal every where i go. If i am allowed to carry i am still limited by what i can reasonably conceal so i like to keep something larger in my vehicle. If my gun is stolen and used in a crime my conscious is clear because the fault lies with the lawmakers, not i.

For the inexpensive and reliable part, I'd go with a Bersa Thunder 9 or .40 UC Pro. I carry my Bersa 9mm in my truck at all times and it has never failed in any way with over 1k rounds through it of all kinds. Ball and HP ammo of varying grain weight.

What use(s) do you anticipate for your car gun? Impromptu target shooting? Spur of the moment trading fodder? Unexpected hunting opportunities?

I don't see where anyone bothered to ask...

+1
I thought it was obvious.
Yes, it would seem that most contributors made this assumption; I find that very interesting.

I have visited bicycling forums where it has routinely caused a stir when someone inquired about methods of carry when cycling. Whereas the cyclist didn't specify, she might very possibly be transporting such a weapon to the local range for recreation. The trouble arises when the anti civil rights folk appear and argue the absurdity of carrying; the inherent assumption seems always to be that the purpose of carrying is self defense, or, in their thinking, killing people.

I do suspect that the OP wants the weapon in his car primarily for defensive purposes, but he/she didn't specify...
