Mods, this seemed to have a bit of Legal, S&T, and General Handguns so I put it here.

Here's the situation: I discovered a loophole in my university's prohibition on firearms: a certain dean has the power to grant them (I've spoken with her before and though she was surprised at the thought, she agreed that she had the power to authorize exceptions. I didn't press things at that point, though). I would say that she's not a supporter of guns, but she's open-minded and willing to listen.

What I'd like to do is talk with her and request an exception; I'm prepared to try and "bargain" down to something like Condition Three Only or even "must be carried with magazine separate." I know that's not ideal, but it's better than nothing and I doubt I can get everything I want. I intend to show her what I'll have. What I'd like to know is your opinion on the "least threatening" handgun, as in one which is small but says "responsible gun owner." I was thinking something like a Beretta Cheetah, but I'd like to know what others think. It's crucial that I win her over on this, as legal challenges to the university's policy would take too long and I have good reason to believe that I would be "academically disciplined" if I were to be found carrying without permission.

How bout something that isn't all black, like this 5.7

I love the hello kitty AR but what on earth is that thing where the pistol grip should be?

Huh??? Getcherself a S&W M10 or M&P in .38 Special. About as non-threatening as a decent SD handgun can look. Barney Fife never scared nobody!

Keltec P32... So small if you pointed it at a criminal, he probably wouldn't freeze if you had him dead to rights.

I don't know about "least threatening", since everyone has their own perceptions of things, and what may be terrifying to you may be run-of-the-mill to me. Sorry I can't help more.

If I may editorialize for a moment though, it struck me as I was reading your post, that what you're doing could actually be a bad thing. By being willing to "bargain down" to a different level of carry other than cocked & locked, you're essentially sending the message that your right to defend yourself is negotiable, with the Dean being the all-powerful decision maker. This seems risky to me at best, and at worst, an acknowledgement of their "right" to deny law-abiding citizens the ability to defend themselves while on campus.

If I were in your shoes, instead of speaking with the Dean and attempting to appeal to her with compromises and conditions, I'd contact your local advocacy groups (or start your own on campus) and exploit the fact that the school's policy has this (rather foolish) loophole. Exploit the fact that the only thing that's keeping students from legally carrying is the say-so of one of the faculty members. There's a HUGE arguing point there - the "haves" (the Dean) has the authority to decide which (or none) of the "have-nots" (the students) get the priviledge of defending themselves in an effective way. It has the potential to really open some eyes, the eyes of people who had no idea that there even was such a rule - and you know, you might not get anywhere personally with it. You might still be denied the RTC on your campus - but then again, that was a chance you took from the beginning. And if something good does come of it, and the rules are re-vamped, everyone benefits. As your plan currently stands, you are the only one who benefits if you win. That's not a bad thing, but changing the rules so everyone wins I think is a much sweeter victory. The local news would eat it up too.

Once again, just my two cents.

Agree!

I know of situations, where is was legal for someone to give/grant permissions for persons to have firearms as dictated by state law, or "corporate, business regulation".

Revolvers are not antiquated!
Many times these fit best for a person and setting.

Just make sure it's really, really clean. Then, with it obviously unloaded, hand it to her to inspect.

When she hands it back, slip it into a plastic bag in your backpack/briefcase and the retrieve the identical one you plan on carrying.

"Leaverage, mate."

Just kidding.

I'd go for either a Kimber Raptor/Custom Eclipse or a Dan Wesson Pointman. Immaculate firearms/finish defeat some with any fear factor IMO.

Okay, maybe not in the case of the S&W 500. . .

Something small and shiny, perhaps engraved, with pearl or other fancy grips would strike many women as minimally threatening because, to those who don't know better, it would look more like jewelry than danger. A very timid friend back in college didn't ever want to play with the airsoft guns or plink cans with the pellet guns but she was enthralled with a really lovely, 2-shot derringer in a local store and even sat there one afternoon when a friend was working so she could draw it.

The most threatening-looking guns, IMO, would be polymer types and police-looking snubby revolvers with no-nonsense, black rubber grips.

The small Springfield and Kimber 1911s might also hit on the "jewelry" receptors instead of the "thug" receptors.

How about the gatling rubber band gun, look up gatling guns on the google page and it will show

Small steps, EM. You catch more flies with honey; and if the administrator in question didn't go into panic mode when first approached on the subject, there's a potential convert. Plunking down the tactical bag with the HK USP Tactical complete with can could be over the top.

A quality, spotless 1911, IMO, almost always can receive some admiration simply from the quality of fit and finish, and decades and decades of even just peripheral familiarity.

YMMV, as always.

Just a thought.

Get one of those American arms 22's. I bought one, years ago, just because it looks like a toy. It can fire 22 magnums, down to 22 shorts, depending on the cylinder you pop in, and they make a Belt Buckle, that it sits in, and you would swear it was just part of the buckle.

SA revolver complete with 'gunslinger' holster?

I resemble that remark sometimes when I am out of town or heading to my vehicle!

This thread angers me greatly. We now have to worry about how threatening our guns are?

It bothered me when I saw the title of it and I mean NO offense to any posters here. Looks and all when it comes to firearms or ANY other object.

Thank you.

By the way, I think that some guns are super 'pretty' or cute or BEAUTIFUL and I mean no offense to anyone if that sounds too GIRLY or feminine. I am a lady and I love beautiful objects! I think that many styles of firearms are COOL even if I don't own them! I think that my husband's Marlin lever action in 45-70 and his Bushmaster are NEAT or COOL too!

Sincerely,

Catherine

Ruger Bearcat. My afraid of guns grandmother wasn't even bothered by it. It's got the classic "good-guy cowboy look," but being so diminuitive, it makes it even less imposing.

I'm not advocating you carry that, unless you have no other option. Me, I'd carry it, but I practice drawing and dryfiring with it about 6 days a week. from a fast-draw western holster, no less.

The last three girls in a row I've shown it to thought it was pretty cute.

Personally, I'd be a tad frightened of anyone pulling a SAA on me, because they probably know how to use it if they're carrying it, but it's about the least threatening thing I can think of for someone not in the know.

Unless you wanna bring a single shot flintlock....

Indianaboy, what gun is that?

A Sig, not sure the model number...wanna say P-210, maybe?

If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's an 8-shot 9mm, an older design formerly used by the Swiss military...

And UNGODLY expensive these days! :what:

Kingpin sums it up well, IMO:
"I don't know about "least threatening", since everyone has their own perceptions of things, and what may be terrifying to YOU may be run-of-the-mill to ME."

Funny note on the Kel-Tec. My brother and dad are both 'revolver guys' and aren't overly keen on the notion of me pocket-carrying a chambered P3AT. Despite the fact that they would feel comfortable with me doing it with a REVOLVER...

See, they're "old school," the small autos THEY'RE most familiar with are .22 and .25 single action "hair trigger" jobs...

Which is a long-winded way of saying, I don't know that I'd recommend ANY small auto...

IMO, maybe a .38 or .357 snub.

Charter has one called the "Undercoverette," in .32 mag IIRC - partly done in pink if you think that'd help your case! :p
