Need Advice on "Least Threatening" Gun

The more I think about it, the more I think you should take more than one firearm to show her. Tell her about the different features in the different weapons. See if you can get her curious about the differences, and why you prefer to carry one instead of the other. Take the holsters you'd use as well, and show how they're worn and how that translates in an actual situation where a weapon might be drawn.

And then ask her if she would like to go to range and try any of them out so she can get a better idea of the concept.

Imagine making a convert out of the sole person who can grant exceptions for people to carry concealed on campus?

Another point is that if at all possible, you ought to buy her a guest pass at a range. That would make a huge difference.

Also, if she has the power to revoke the privilege, I wouldn't blab about it to anyone. You don't want to be on the news as "The guy who got to carry a gun on a VA campus"

If possible, ask her to go to the range with you and then show her the pistol that you plan on using. Ask her to shoot it and show her what it can and cannot do. That would be the best way to win her over IMO. That way, any initial discomfort would be quickly taken away after she fires it for herself.

She might, then, settle on a larger or more menacing-looking gun once she understands that it would help you take shots with better aim or something like that, limiting risk of others being in the line of fire. Just a thought, but definitely take her to a range if you can.

also need to impress apon her that you are not "Rambo" and have no intention of "saving the campus" from the BG's.your concern is to protect your life,if it saves a few more in the process,so be it. jwr

Also beware of her discussing it with her colleagues, who may have a larger anti-gun bias than she, after your session.

"Lady Smith" revolver, or an older nickel sheriff's model with pearl or ivory grips.

Or a BHP or 1911 with rosewood grips.

Take a look at one of the "BBQ Guns" threads for more ideas, but don't go too big.

Buy yourself a Kel Tec 32 or 380 and get the chrome slide and electric blue frame. No one will take you serious until you have to use it.

I'd say stick with a revolver, it looks the least threatening. Don't get too into bargaining about carrying the mag seperate/etc. Any "proof" you can show of classes you've been to, etc. would help.

I'd bring a krinkov AK under a trench coat as a joke... She probably wouldn't think it was as funny.

I would just try to stay away from those all black "evil" and "menacing" looking guns. Something with a little wood on it probably wouldn't hurt. It’s sad but true, many anti gun types deal in all emotion and no facts, which is why this "least threatening" gun idea may just work. Never mind that bullets are bullets if they come from a "cute" gun or an all black "man killer".

I'd say something along the lines of a Sig 232. Make sure it's damn clean, and it comes across as a "business" type firearm, but isn't exactly "threatening" looking.

Just my .02.

I don't know about "less threatening" but a Kel-tec 9mm P-11 is a great carry gun with the tried and true 9mm round.

I personally like my .40 SIG 229 but the Kel-tec P-11 is never far away.

Skipped the whole mess when I saw the pink AR, posted by someone who didn't get the question.

Dude, no contest.

.38 Chief's Special. Or anything else with a "police" or "protective" connotation.

Nothing semi. A nice traditional, but small, revolver.

Okay... Went back a few...

Some of you guys don't get it.

This is a "non-gun" person with an open mind. A pink gun ain't gonna go anywhere. The person is NOT stupid. HOWEVER, a "police" gun, that is recognizable as such (i.e., "Chief's Special") should fly pretty well.

An AKS-74U with a 50-round magazine. And black furniture. Either that or a Tec-9.

OK, seriously, "police" = "safety" for 99.9% of people. Go with any police sidearm. Definitely A+ advice.

Don't just show her the gun, invite her to go shooting with you. Make sure you drill in the safety rules and do a little bit of slow-fire shooting to demonstrate your skill. IMHO this would be much more likley to win her over, by showing you are serious about this and know what you are doing.

SA Revolver - in 45 LC. Even if she made a remark about "Wild West".

I have seen people who are pretty anti intrigued by my Blackhawk. They haven't see those kinds of weapons on the evening news.

The 45 LC - "it's an old west caliber from 1873" seems to reassure people. I think that they think that it's somehow less powerful. :)

I agree with those who say take her shooting.

If not then a small revolver. People of her generation have all seen the good guys with revolvers..

Please know what you are getting yourself into if you ever need to fire your weapon in self defense on campus.

As I understand it, the Virginia State Police protocol for such situations is to treat everyone with a gun, who is not wearing a uniform, as a BG and neutralize him or her as a threat ASAP. I got the not-so-subtle impression that that could involve copious amounts of lead flying in the direction of the threat. Questions and apologies come later.

They are very, very determined never to let another VA Tech massacre take place.

Well, IMO they've failed at that goal. They haven't done a single thing that would prevent another VT from happening. And they still haven't realized the only thing that can help end one faster than the police's response time.

Revolvers tend to be less threatening than autoloaders, IMHO.

For what it's worth as well, I have a female friend who I've managed to convert from liberal anti to just "on the fence" who thinks that the Beretta PX4 is "pretty"

From what you wrote, it sounds as though they are determined to be the ones responsible for the better portion of the massacre...

I don't really understand why you want to play games with her. It sounds like you might be the Trailblazer here for future students to be allowed to carry. Show her what you have and be respectful and go armed with some sound statistics. Stay calm and cool, you will do just fine.
