I have a savage model 10 .308, burris 6x24x44, leupold 1 piece base, dove tail front windage rear, with burris low mount signiture rings & posi-lock inserts.-- with the "0" inserts my scope touches the barrel. My scope only has 22 moa adjustment with 1/8 " clicks.-- my base is a two hole mount but my gun is drilled for a longer three hole base. I can't return the rings, I've already painted them. I would like to set up so that i have 17 moa elevation and 5 moa bottom. Should I start over, go to a 5 or 10 moa base, three hole base, medium height rings? Can't change rifle or scope and would like to use these rings.

I wouldn't begin to go to that much trouble using the wrong base.

Get the correct base to fit the rifle and start over.

BTW: A 6x-24x scope is going to need all the screw holes you got to keep it on there.

What would you suggest for the "right" base. I realize i should use the longer base, but could you give me advice on which one. And what do you know about posi lock inserts? Should i ditch those, even though burris claims the scope tube is more surface to surface secure. And what do you think of using moa elevated bases.
