Get a Mauser 98 action or a Remington action put a heavy Sporter barrel on it from Shilen, and a timney trigger, chamber it in 30/06 or .308 or 300 wm put in a Mc Millan stock, and you'll have a cheap reasonably priced 1000 yd rifle .if YOU CAN SHOOT.

I can't figure out why they call the 12 FV a 12? Is it cerakoted?
Mine is not, just blued. I assumed the "V" was because it is their heavy barrel "varmint" gun in its description, but I have no idea. As to 12, I thought it was like the 112, but short action. You know way more than I about these things!

Generally 10's are blued, 12's are stainless, which is why I ask - it's a little weird to see a blued 12, rather than a 10. For standard Savage nomenclature, XX means short action, XXX means long action, F means synthetic stock, V means heavy barrel - so the difference between a 10 FV and a 12 FV SHOULD be the fact a 10 is blue and the 12 stainless. But of course, they have SS denomination for stainless models too, and no value = blued, i.e. 12 BVSS is short action (XX), laminate (B), heavy (V), stainless (SS). But you don't see a 10 FVSS which would be a short action, synthetic, heavy barrel, stainless rifle with internal box mag... You don't see that because it would be 12 FVSS...

Just weird to see them making a blued "12".

Here its a rebate. Glad to hear you like the .308, i am considering one of those as well. Agreed this is s fantastic price. They, and others have nicer versions, Whittaker had a really good deal on a super nice stainless Tikka, but I can get two of the 12FV rifles for that price.

This is my first bolt gun, what scope and mount did you use?

One other question, a silly one but how is this gun loaded? Obviously it is the top load version so I assume you just force them past the lips into the mag? The instructions did not
Actually describe the process and I didnt want to deform the lips of the magazine.

He is running a Bushnell Elite 6500 Tactical 6-24x50 in Warne 30mm rings. As for loading the blind magazine, we just press the round down into the magazine and then back to the rear stop, repeat. That is one of the advantages of my 10T in that it came with a detachable 4 round magazine, and I later picked up a 10 round Savage factory magazine for it. It also came in an Accu-Stock with full length aluminum bedding block. I managed to snag mine from Cabela's for an after rebate sale price of $425. I also like the 5R rifled 24" barrel of the 10T. Although the 26" standard rifled barrel of the 12FV does provide a slight boost in velocity.

I will be on the lookout for one in .308 or 6.5 CM. The 12 FV is on sale (rebate) for a while.

I would go for the 6.5 Creedmoor today. When I bought ours, the .308 was the best long range option offered, and now I have stocked up on .308 ammo and reloading components, so we will stick with it until time to rebarrel.

Yes, I have gone back and forth between those two, and eithèr is fine. I know this thread is about 1000 yards, but my shooting is all less. If I get 1000 yard oportunities, 6.5 would be my first choice.

Rebarreling has also gone through my mind. Shooting it as .308, then buying a match grade 6.5 CM barrel...
