I'm sorry to double post this (I also posted to Rallying Point), but then I saw this forum and thought it might fit it...

My son's Boy Scout troop is from Cincinnati, Ohio.

A few months back I asked (on another board) if anyone knew of a place in SW Ohio, SE Indiana, or Northern/Central Kentucky where the Scouts might camp from Friday to Sunday, and shoot .22 rifles.

I followed up, but have only 1 "maybe" out of the 3 places suggested.

We now have a firm date, May 20-22, and I wanted to put out another request for suggestions. The suggestions I received were: Pickaway County Sportsmens Club, TDI (OH), and NMLRA (IN).

If you have any additional ideas, I sure would be appreciative!

Thanks,

How about Wayne National Forest (ironton distric). They have lots of trails, and I believe you can shoot in National Forests (they allow hunting).

I've backpacked the Marrietta district. It is amazingly rugged and beautiful for being the mid-west.

Another area might be up near Dayton. I lived there for a summer and remember a state run range out to the east of town. I believe it was in a State Park--Most state parks have a group camp area that Scouts can access for small fees.

Good luck,

Fairfield Sportsmen's Association is a possibility (near Ross, OH), although that's pretty close to home and may not be so fun as farther away. They have a fishing lake and a site next to it where groups camp from time to time. Thay also cooperate with the Scouts. PM me if you need contact information.

USP - thanks for the suggestion, I will look into both.

Henry - due to an ignoramus firearm owner, or biased township trustees, Fairfield Sportsmens Club is on the hot seat. Supposedly a "flyer" left the grounds.

At the moment the neither the rifle nor plinking range is not open, and the pistol and skeet/trap are only open when an RSO is on duty. I am a member, and the whole situation it is a major, major bummer.

BB62:

The Crossroads Council in Indianapolis has a camp just south of Connersville, IN (Bear Creek Reservation) that has the typical 50 ft BSA range. We used to use it once a year for our rifle shooting weekend. Nice facility, and you should be able to get in without any trouble. Call the Crossroads Council office at 317.925.1900 to get info and make arrangements.

Crossroads also has several other camps with ranges, although Bear Creek is the closest to Cincy. You could check out Camp Redwing in Anderson, or Ransburg in Bloomington (not too bad a drive across SR 46). Ransburg is a phenominal camp, used as a summer camp by the Council, and attracts troops from all over the country. It's located on Lake Monroe, has a great waterfront area, good range, a COPE course, etc.

If you haven't done a BSA shooting event before, you should check out the BSA regulations. Single shot rifles only, NRA instructor required, Eddie Eagle training before shooting, etc. Very safety oriented program. And it's good - I still remember 11 year old kids who had never shot before working to memorize the EE stuff so they could get range time. Motivated! Several years of shoot with no problems.

Good luck. PM me if you have any questions.

I got my rifle merit badge when at Scout Camp when I was 11. We did safety training but I don't remember it being Eddie Eagle oriented. If you get into a real bind you can go to Beaumont Scout Camp which is about 45min east of Cleveland. There's a 50ft range there. It's in the Greater Cleveland Council so you'd have to contact them for more info. I'd think you could find something closer, though.

As a side note, I did get to shoot .30-06 while backpacking in Philmont Scout Ranch, it's the only BSA sanctioned range that allows rifles bigger than .22.

NRA instructor required

What does one need to do to become an offical 'NRA instructor'? I'm an assistant scoutmaster for a small troop here in Oregon and I've wanted to work on the rifle and shotgun merit badges with the scouts, but we can never find an NRA person. So I was thinking that if I were to become an instructor myself it would solve the problem... I just have no idea how to go about it, does anyone have any info?

Zaleski State Forrest- Lake Hope State Park, has a shooting range you might check into. Just might be farther east than you wanna go, its over towards Athens.

Seven or eight years ago I was camp master for Camp Crooked Creek just Norht of Elizabethtown, KY. It was operated by the Old Kentucky Home
Council, BSA in Louisville. I have heard that council combined with one from just across the Ohio River in Indiana. The camp had a regular 50 ft range and also had a trap range for shotguns. Since I am no longer in the area I am not certain what is still there, but have heard they have expanded so must assume it is all still operating.

El T:

Where did 494 meet? I was in Troop 112 in Carmel in the late 60s, early 70s, and scoutmaster of Troop 120 in Southport in the 90s.

Troop 494 sounds familar... wonder if we crossed paths at a Council or District event?
