I'm currently looking at 2 but am open to more options. The first is from a local classified, it's listed at $600, but I'd definitely make a lower offer. I like the idea of not paying tax, shipping or filling out a 4473. Here's the ad with attached picture:

"New AK-47, It has had maybe 200 rounds shot through it. There is also 260 rounds of ammo with it, Not wolf ammo either, golden tiger. 3-30 round mags. Notation on rifel reads "Yogoslavia Vulcan Mod V47 KO 1998""

The other I'm considering is:

Are there any better deals online? I've always liked the look of the classic AK, especially in Red. Any advice is appreciated.

What is the cost/make of the first one?

The one you linked from Atlantic is a Lancater Consulting which has a good rep, and Atlantic is a forum member here. I doubt you'd be disappointed.

The first is listed at $600 and described as "Yugoslavia Vulcan Mod V47 KO 1998", since it's a private sale I could offer less and there would be no tax, shipping etc.

Out of the two I'd get the Lancaster. I prefer having a chrome-lined barrel.

Personally I like Polish underfolders and milled Bulgarian AKs.

How would you go about getting (or seeing how much) the THR discount at Atlantic would be?

Vulcan is (one of) the new name(s) for Hesse.

There are a few companies in the firearms industry that change their name on a yearly basis so that ignorant folks will continue to send them money.

That bad? (serious question)

Dead serious. There are a very few absolutly horrible companies that churn out firearms.

Here are their Names:

Hesse/Vulcan

Special Weapons/Cohair Arms/ TACTICAL WEAPONS TRAINING ACADEMY INC
COHARIE ARMS, INC.
COHARIE ORDNANCE FACTORY INC.
OMEGA ARMS, INC.
SPECIAL WEAPONS, INC., A CLOSE CORPORATION
ACME PARTS INC.
BCH MANUFACTURING, LLC
TOP NOTCH ACCESORIES, LLC
TOP NOTCH ACCESSORIES, INC
BOBCAT WEAPONS INC.
This company under several names is run by a scum sucking jerk
named Todd Bailey (and if he thinks he can come after me for
libel/slander, let his ass try)

Other companys like Century aren't the best, but Vulcan/Hesse/Todd Bailey make Century look like CZ.

The only thing missing from the Atlantic rifle you linked is a scope rail. Other than that, the Atlantic is a good looking rifle, and Lancaster has a good rep.

You can have the side rail added by a gunsmith, too, if you desire. If all you want to mount is a reddot, Ultimak makes a forward gas tube mount that works good, as I understand it. Don't bother with dustcover mounts- they will not hold zero.

Some folding stocks will not function with the side rail, so you might not want one after all.

They don't?

All the folding stocks I'm aware of function quite fine with side rails.

However, they don't work real good when you have a scope or scope mount installed on the rail.

The Soviet doctrine for folding stocked Kalashnikovs is to only fold them during transport. E.G. Ivan jumps out of the airplane with his stock folded, lands, unfolds stock, mounts optic and carries on the mission.

Mission complete, Ivan unmounts his optic, folds the stock on his AK, gets on the bus/plane/truck/etc and goes home/next AO.

Of the two...

The Lancaster by a mile.

You'd actually have to pay ME money to shoot a Vulcan anything.

And I SURELY wouldn't pay $600 for a Vulcan.

But that's just me.

I was under the impression that there was a folding stock out there that didn't function with a side rail (not talking about the scope/mount, just the rail)

Actually, that's pretty smart. Jump with the optic protected in a padded case, then mount it w/o fear of damage during the jump.

Nalioth that soviet doctrine toward folders makes sense. I put folders on mine mostly for the cool but I never fire it except from the shoulder and fold them up for storage. I keep them in tennis bags. Wilson is much more benign to folks than Saiga.

I'm glad you stated this. I've run into some people over the years who think under or side folder AKs can or should be shot like "a pistol" with the stock folded. Yeah this may look neat in front of your pals when plinking but was not the idea behind them.

Go with the Lancaster.

I'd recommend either a Bulgarian SA93 or SLR95 with milled receivers and Steyr CL barrels. They are two of the finest ever made. $600-800 range.

So the receiver cover rails don't work well? How does the side rail work?
