I had 2 different SAR-1's, both bought used, both very fine rifles.
Replaced the trigger with European components, eliminating trigger slap and improving the pull.
Very solid rifles.

The WASR should be just fine if you buy it through a reputable seller.
Get the solid stock, IMO.

Bulgarian Arsenal brand.
Doesn't matter where you get it from,
It will be expensive and worth every penny.

The only rifles that might come close to comparing are the Poly-Tech Legends and the MAK-90.

The Legend will be more expensive and most MAK-90s still have the goofy thumbhole stocks and original Chinese parts.
In both cases the internals will be softer and rougher than the US made Bulgaria Arsenal internals.

Yugo underfolder from classic arms... $429.95

Are the Vulcan arm's Ak's really crap,What are the problems with them?I'm not looking for a Ak that I have to tune up to get it to shoot accurate enough to hit a target at 100 yds.I'm not that much of a gunsmith and I don't know very much about replacing parts.

Gun lover, you can't "tune" some things, there are a few companies who make guns so mangled that I am speechless, Vulcan is one. Make your own, you control the quality and then you will know how to fix it if it breaks.

Any decent AK with a decent shooter can easily hit pie plates at 100yds. Easily. I can usually keep all mine in a 6" group on irons. Even the bolt action older guys at the range complimented my shooting with it. I think they were expecting me to pray and spray.

look into the Saiga. and convert it yourselt for $150. great gun and a loyal following. if you don't want to deal with it, +1 for the Yugo underfolder

I recently started my AK addiction with a WASR. Mine is a 12" model with a welded compensator.

It shoots perfectly, is quite accurate, but its fit and finish is just plain nasty. As has been mentioned before, the receiver looks like monkeys beat on it before they put it in the box, most mags wobble quite a bit, and there were metal shavings all over from the magwell expansion (which looks like KaKa)

So, I began my search for 1 or 2 "really good" AKs to have in my collection instead of a bunch of $300 ones. I decided to buy parts and go the custom route. This one is on its way to Red Jacket for building up. Even unbuilt, the thing is just beautiful.

I will sell my WASR whenever the M70 comes back home.

Were I you, I would pony up the extra cash and buy a good AK. I hear the Lancaster guns are good, the Red Jacket guns are also great. Both are available at Atlantic Firearms. You could also get a Krebs if you got the cash.

Gun Lover,
I hope I'm not breaking any rules here, but, you need to do some homework and here are a couple of good places to start:

http://www.gunsnet.net/Linx310/index.shtml

http://www.akforum.net

The first site is the consumate info center for the WASR folks keep recommending to you. Me included now. :p

The second site has forums on all the AK-47 variants and you will learn lots.

From the research I've done, the common concensus everywhere I've been seems to be avoid Vulcan as if they had The Black Clap. :scrutiny:
Sounds like a good idea to me.

Okay, and just for fun, here's a quick and dirty pic of my own EBR WASR-10/63 in her all black evening wear:

Yup, good sites for the AK curious, as well as gunco.net.

I have now or have had Chinese Mak types, WASR, AMD-63s and 65s, Tantals, Polish 47s, Yugos, and Romanian G buils on Ewbanks, Global, DCI, and Arsenal reciever types. Without question, my favorite is the milled bulgarian (nice Ironwood furniture rounds it out).

If you can, handle a few then check out a milled. It may be a bit heavier (but I haven't packed a rifle around for miles in a while) but they're nice.

(I'm also quite fond of the Yugo M95 5.56 variant built on a fixed stock.)

Dang MudPuppy! You have my wet dream-team line-up of AK's. Lucky dog!

My next is going to be a Tromix conversion or a Yugo M70 underfolder. The AMD 63-65 is in that possible list too. Right now, the M70 is looking mighty good for the money.

I was looking at the milled AK's over at Atlantic and have a serious lust for one, but, my wallet is saying NOOOOOoooo!!! right now. :D
That's also the same story for the Tromix too. :(

I've been doing my home work but there is so many variations out there and I'm confused what type I should go with. What do ya'll think of the Saiga conversion Ak 103 from Atlantic firearms?I hear it is a nice rifle even though it is not a true AK(read that somewhere but cant recall).

i think what you heard was that Converted Saiga's are as close to a true AK that your gonna get... at least thats what I constantly see everywhere!

Genuine russian built rifles are always a good investment for the long run

That's exactly what I heard.I should have gotten myself a decent AK last winter but I spent $650.00 on a Mini 14 and I really regret it now.Only a few hundred more and I could have gotten an Ak 103 and hi cap mags that actually worked.

I like my Romanian SAR-1. No malfunctions at all, decent trigger pull (better than my mini-14), only a hint of slap that I may fix someday with a Tapco G2 trigger group.

The Saiga is made in the same factory where the man "Mr K" himself, still works... The Saiga is the real deal, made PC for importation...

They do make a few things different on the Saiga just to get by import laws.

Will at Re-Jacket has modified Saiga rifles with the Saiga foregrip (RS-PG $589.00 )

They do the Saiga conversions for Atlantic...

Check them out: http://www.redstick-firearms.com/

As much as I like helping newbies deciding on AKs.... we should just make a sticky thread about all the different types of AKs and the pro's and con's. This question comes up constatnly.

saiga.jpg
you can buy this for less than $300...High quality Russian made and easily modified for high capacity mags if that's what floats your boat. For the life of me I don't understand the fascination with cheaply made AKS from various countries. I bought a norinco Mak90 when they first hit the scene for $129 and a SKS for $99. Both were of higher quality, brand new and foolish me sold mine for triple what I paid for them when the AWB became law.

A lot of people bash the WASR-10s. I think they are just fine. Sure, they don't have the fit and finish of the higher priced ones but they work. They are a good introductory AK. If you are a DIY kinda guy, I'd buy a kit. That way you can learn a lot about them and figure out exactly what you like or dislike about every component. Then you can put something real nice together for yourself..like teombe is doing.

I have found nothing wrong with my WASR. It shoots where and when I need it to, which is enough for me.

I have two Saigas, and must say of all the AK type rifles I've owned, the Saiga brand is definitely the best as far as quality and value go.
