I found 2 used Savage rifles at a pawn shop and I need your help to decide if I should buy one. What's the difference between the Model 10 and Model 110? Which caliber is the most available? Which caliber is the least expensive? Which caliber has the most versatility?

1) used Savage Model 10 .243 with a cheap Center Point 4-16 x 40 scope. Black Synthetic stock for $300

2) used Savage Model 110 .270 Black Synthetic stock for $150

If I could find a 110 for $150 around here, as long as the action looked good, it would be my next project gun.

Ammo I think costs about the same. May have a few more choices in .243 if you don't reload. If you reload you can use the .270 for about anything.

Currently the short-action is the Model 10, and the long action is the Model 110.

Unless you are hunting large, dangerous game, either caliber is equally versatile.

Both calibers are common as dirt.
If you can't find ammo for .243 or .270, you haven't found the Wal-Mart yet.

Ammo is overpriced in every caliber.
Any difference in price between .243 and .270 is negligible.

I would buy the cheaper of the two, and use the rest of my money for the bottomless pit that the gun hobby can be.

I would buy the 110 for two reasons.

1. Personally, I prefer the .270 to the .243. (That's a personal choice. Yours may be different)

2. You're probably going to change the scope anyway, so you may as well get the one that's half the price. You can get a Center Point of that power for less than $100. Assuming the guns are in the same condition, you'd basically be paying $150 for the scope.

Just the way I see it.

Sorry but I'm a newb. How do I know if the action looks good? How can I tell if the barrel is still good?

best bet is to remove the bolt and shine a light down the barrel or inspect it looking up at a light....as for checking the action, cycle it to see that it feels good, not too sloppy not too stiff cycles well, if you could also try this with new models thatd make it easy to tell

A $150 Savage Model 110 is a no brainer unless there is something very wrong with it.

For me to pass up a 110 for $150, the bore would have to look like a sewer pipe. I need to start checking pawn shops more often.

Yep I'd buy the Savage in .270 in a heartbeat unless it was in horrible shape or something was wrong with it. I'd also try to talk them down to about $250 on the other one if it has the accu trigger. If it doesn't I'd say try to talk them down to $225.

It really depends what you want to do with a rifle? If you want to hunt deer, either will work. If you are more interested in hunting elk and deer, the 270 might be a better fit. If you are more inclined to use the rifle for deer, coyotes, and bobcats, the 243 might be better.

Since we can't see the quality of used rifles on this forum, it is near to impossible to give quality advise which would be better concerning the condition of each firearm.

Went back to check out the Savage 110 .270 and noticed a slight bulge at the end of the barrel. The crown is pretty rough too. Would probably have to have the barrel cut and recrowned. Not looking like such a good deal anymore.

Might not be a good deal for you but I don't find them in that shape around here for less then $275. And for $150 I was planning on putting a new barrel on it anyway.

I went back to the Pawn Shop and they still had the Savage 110 .270 with the slight bulge at the very end of the barrel. I asked the guy what kind of a price break he could give since the barrel either needed to be replaced or cutdown and recrowned.

He said "How does $100 out the door sound?" I said "sold".

Bought it for $100 and he threw in an almost new free Allen soft case.

Now to decide between buying a new barrel or getting this one cutdown and recrowned.

Probably the latter for convenience and less cost.

Nice buy.

If .270 is the caliber you can cut and crown.

If you ever wanted to do an inexpensive simi-custom check with ER Shaw Barrels.
