Just be double sure that the arriving PD or sheriff officer does not mistake you for the BG and remove the threat. They would not immediately know who is who when arriving and could ruin your day for sure.

I wouldn't want to bet my life on it, but I'd guess the 60-something executive-looking guy in boxer shorts with the $1,200 gun drops down the "likely-perp" sort-out pretty quickly.

If he'd shot him he couldn't claim self defense. He still might be looking at charges. He pursued a man that ran away without his gun. Remember folks - our guns are for DEFENSE.

No, YOUR guns are for defense. My guns are for fighting crime, brandishing to show I'm a tough guy, and firing into the air whenever I'm celebrating or angry about something.

Keep your lessons off my Wessons!

I saw this story last night on the news and couldn't believe it. That's probably the first time I've seen a story like that where the guy is walking around during the whole interview holding the pistol he used.

Which is why you should call 911 and establish the fact that you're holding a suspect at gunpoint and give the operator BOTH your description and the suspect's description and make sure they know damn well which one you are, so the cop knows the gun-weilding boxer guy is the one who made the call instead of trying to make a judgement call upon arriving at a scene with minimal information.

That's exactly what I was thinking.....at least he kept his finger off the trigger, even if he did sweep the camera guy a few times:banghead:

No blood, no foul. He had ample reason to believe the guy was up to no good when he ran into that lady's yard. I wouldn't have fired and I wouldn't have done the interview; and if I had I wouldn't have swept the reporter. Still, the end result is a captured perp and no injuries. This story gets a positive from me.

Most unsafe interview I ever saw, BUT, it showed the PD believe his story completely - he still HAS the Deagle. Unless, of course, *cough cough*, that's his BUG...

Seriously funny. Strolling around waving a Deagle (or any gun) while relating his account of events. It is always bigger in Texas. Reminds me of the Texan who shot a guy with a shotgun who had robbed his neighbor and was fleeing through the shooter's yard. Maybe it ain't wrong, but I don't know if it is right. :uhoh:

The subject gentleman is from Finland, thus the accent.

Not saying he acted wisely, but it appears from the news account he reacted to the screams he heard with his available facilities and conditioning without consideration of possible outcomes. Time to think it through when the perp is heading towards the home of an 80+ yr old woman, close neighbor, well, ask yourself... what would you do?

The other incident referred to was here in Pasadena, his name is Joe Horn. He was never charged with a crime. But he's living with his decision every day...

I wouldn't mind having either one of those guys for a neighbor... in fact I think I may...

Well, I think that this is a trend that is increasing, i.e. neighbors responding. The other interesting thing was the Desert Eagle .50 AE....

Totally agree this guy would make a good neighbor by all accounts. I agree with his actions and here in Texas it is legal to use your firearm in defense of others.

Shooting into the ground, unless he hits some kind of pavement or other hard object would be safe as the ground is saturated with rain and soft.

Hoorah !

Good for him.

In this day of looking the other way when someone is being attacked it's nice to read about someone that will come to the aid of their neighbors.

I think he could have put the gun away before the interview.

Definitely Russian/Polish/former Soviet state or other relative origin.

His surname - Melartin - is Finnish. He does not speak with a slavic accent. Not sure why national origin/ethnicity is even relevant.

Glad he was able to help a neighbor. Glad he did not get charged with anything for discharging his weapon (then again, maybe that's not an offense in TX).

1 - carries a Desert Eagle (chrome) for self defense
2 - fires warning shots
3 - enjoys making citizens arrests

This guy is a Segway away from a well-armed mall cop...

At least he had the balls to do something out of concern for his elderly neighbor. What he should of, could of done, etc. is a moot point .;)

Freaking hilarious but gota love it. Technically one can shoot a robber at night in TX to prevent them from escaping with stolen property if no other means to stop them exists. I don't recall but i believe you can do so to protect the property of a third party.

It is within city limits (most places). And Harris County, which I believe is where he resides is one of the most liberal districts in the United States...

Well, then its just a miracle he wasn't arrested and sent to a re-education camp.(extreme sarcasm and eye roll)

My dancing parter and I are very close.

I'd have done the same thing, though I can't quite imagine myself referring to a gun as a "dancing partner." I noticed he kept his finger indexed on the gun rather than the trigger the whole time.

To my ear, admittedly no longer acute, his accent could be anything from Russian to Scandinavian to Hungarian to German.

A drug addict broke into my uncle's home in Sharpstown which is a suburb of Houston. He walked in on the guy and ran into the bedroom and grabbed his Colt SAA 45 colt. The bad guy ran out and tried to make believe he was a jogger. The police were called and meanwhile my uncle is out walking the street with his 45 in hand looking for the guy after he called the cops. I wouldn't have done this, I would have stayed home waiting for the police. But get this, as my uncle is walking the neighborhood looking for the guy the cops drive up and ascertain that he is the home owner that called. They then ask him what caliber his revolver is and he tells them 45 colt. One of the officers also carries a 45 colt and gives my uncle a handful of his own 45 colt ammo and they all go looking for the guy together. He was later found hiding in a culvert and arrested.

By the way, Bellaire is a city within a city. Houston surrounds it but it has never been incorporated into the city of Houston. I lived there in the 70s and that's how it was then and I believe it still is.
