Howdy all, first post here after hearing tons of good stuff about THR.

Anyway, on another forum I belong too, we were having a "Post your 10/22" discussion, and it prompted me to go out and buy one of my own. So, today (and 263 greenbacks later) I'm the proud owner of a bone-stock 10/22.

First thing I want to do is replace the stock with a Choate Dragunov model. First off, any tips or thoughts about this stock are greatly appreciated. Now, I'm not a big guy (I'm about 5'5"-5'6", about 190 pounds) and the Dragunov seems like its length of pull could be a little long, but this could be just the way I've seen it pictured.

Secondly, I'm wondering if there would be away to put optics on my rifle, but still put some aftermarket ironsights on it, in case of a situation better suited to avoiding the optics. Is it just a matter of getting taller rings? If I can do that, I was looking at this Williams peep sight (Right Here). Any experience with this model? I also found this type, but I don't know how effective they would be.

As far as the other accessories (muzzle brakes, flash hiders, and the like)...do you really need 'em, or is it more of a "Hey, I can bolt this on to the rifle, so I will!" type of thing? Because, you know, both are just dandy by me. :D

First off, welcome to the forum! Secondly, a 10/22 is a fine rifle to have. Third,
do you really need 'em, or is it more of a "Hey, I can bolt this on to the rifle, so I will!"
I think that is basically what all accessories are for a 10/22. There is no real reason for'em as the rifle is more than adequate in its stock trim, but tweak it and have fun. My suggestion before you go out and buy all the fun goodies for it... pick up a couple of bricks of ammo at wal-mart and get real familirizedlike with it :D

I don't know of any way to put that Williams peep sight on the 10/22 AND put a scope on it as well, but I guess anything can be done. You'd need extra high view-through scope rings, but that would make the scope sit so high off the receiver.

If you're looking to buy one of those Williams peep sights, I have one I'm willing to sell, with a new Williams front fire sight too. I don't have the packaging anymore, but I never actually used it since I ended up putting a scope on my 10/22. I'll sell you both sights for half retail. PM if you're interested.

The first thing to do is get a Volquartzen target hammer($32). That item will help your shooting with that rifle more than any other purchase.

I decided to save scoped .22 shooting for my cz 452, and stick with iron sights on my 10/22.

The williams peep is a substantial upgrade on the ruger factory sight. I heartily recommend taking Raggedclaws up on his offer

Thanks guys!

RaggedClaws, I'll PM you with details and other stuff; I think I'm gonna take you up on your offer.

jefma, I was checking those out at Hornet Products, and I was debating whether or not to get one. What advantages over the stock hammer/bolt assembly do they have?

Okay then, it looks like I'll go iron sights. Hell, if I don't like it, I can stash it in my fun-box for later and slap optics on it.

Anything else I should know about the 10/22? I've owned two other .22 autoloaders (an ancient Savage Model 62 and a newer Marlin), but never a Ruger. Are there any problems/care issues, or anything like that I should know about?

And, a little aside: I was speaking with th CRSO (who has an FFL and is a member of the local PD) at the range last night, and he told me that rimfires are essentially exempt from CA's assault weapons laws, because they are not centerfire, and CA defines an assault weapon starting with a weapon that is centerfire and has a detachable magazine.

Does this mean that I can throw on some 25-round Hot Lips? (The rangemaster wouldn't care.)

Target Practice,
The VQ target hammer will lower the trigger pull from about 10 lbs. down to about 2lbs. Nothing will help you hit what you are aiming at more.
Good Luck and Have Fun!

Only things I can possibly think of would be a new sight(already have a Williams peep on it), silencer, and a select fire trigger group(because I don't know of any ammo much cheaper than .22). I'm looking at a 512 for any precision work, so the 10/22 would be just for fun. Perhaps the occasional rabbit if I decide to take up hunting.

Snowballs chance in Hell of that ever happening in CA, and I think the select fire trigger group is out anywhere, isn't it? Unless you're refering to the rimfire-exempt comment, but even then, CA is a non-supressor state, even with an NFA certification.

Or so I've heard, I guess.

The only way someone can make me live in PRK is if the military calls me up and drags me kicking and screaming.

What's this about rimfire-exemption? As far as I know they're still NFA, but I'm sure there's transferable ones around somewhere for those that have the money. For me personally, I'll wait for the repeal, and buy one for an uninflated price.

I agree about the VQ hammer. I put one on my 10/22 (only mod!) and it really evens out and lightens the trigger pull. Very worth it

Welcome to the forum! :)

Agree on the Volquartsen hammer, or if you have the money to throw around, just get a new trigger group. I recently purchased the Custom B Trigger Assembly from Hornet Products and have been very happy with it.

BTW, if you just decide to purchase the new hammer, consider picking up an extended mag release as well, the factory one sucks.

Hornet Products has a lot of interesting stuff for the 10/22, definately worth checking out.

With regard to raised scope rings so that you can have both glass and iron sights, I know that someone makes such a setup, one of the shooters at the recent Sportsman's Team Challenge had something like this, but I have no idea who makes it.

This is where I've been looking for all my stuff.

Anyhoo, I was looking at the hammer, but I'd like to sit a month and splurge on a new bolt kit as well. (So much for being cheap!)

I have a question about firing pins. Now, the Ti ones say that they are lighter (i.e., faster) and thus reduce the chance of misfires. Then the tool steel ones say that they are more dense (i.e., heavier, therefore slower in my mind), and that they reduce the chance of misfires by providing a more positive strike.

Which one is right? Are there benefits to both? I'm a Titanium-o-phile, but I don't know if I would shell out the extra cash for one.

Ok, I'm going to hop in here with a question. I'm seriously considering the VQ Target Hammer. Are the disconnector and sear worth doing too? And how hard is it to install all of this?

The only mods to my 10/22 so far are an extended mag release, an auto bolt release, and a Bushnell 3-9x32 scope.

I think all you need to do is the target hammer. The trigger is very nice with just this done.
If you pay attention the way everything is before you start taking apart the trigger group and can remember it takes less than 15 minutes. If you are not sure if you can remember, a digital camera is your friend. It is really pretty simple if you have any mechanical aptitude at all.

The Volquartzen target hammer goes for $34 at midwayusa but if you get dealer prices (like me) its $27.60.

I am picking up a 10/22 from another THR member tomorrow and plan on accessorizing the heck out of it starting with the hammer.

The VQ hammer is a great deal. I used Chief Dave's charts and installation instructions from www.rimfirecentral.com and it worked fine.

http://rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13305

See post #4 for a nice color diagram of the parts.

I also got a great deal on the VQ hammer from the VQ bargain bin; it had "cosmetic blemishes" that I could not see. And I ain't looked at it since. Shoots great. None in the bin today, but you may luck up on some. If you do, buy! If you don't, go ahead and buy! It's well worth it.

I went ahead and ordered it from Rimfire Sports. Done business with them before and been very happy, and they're in VA so it won't take long to get to me.

Thanks for the info everybody.

Target Practice;

You paid HOW MUCH for a bone-stock 10/22?!! I knew things were nutz in Kali, but I hadn't realized just how nutz. I recently picked up an on-sale 10/22 deluxe for $189.95 here in Montana.

If you're looking a Hornet, you might as well go & check out the Volquartsen site at: www.volquartsen.com

By all means, try the Choate stock, but if you don't like it, get the Hogue stock. You should be able to find Hogue's being sold for something in the high $50.00 - low $60.00 range.

I've found 10/22's, as most .22 rimfires are, to be fairly picky about what ammo it's gonna like. Therefore I'd suggest doing a lot of ammo testing & making sure you can out-shoot the stock barrel before spending the money for an aftermarket .920 tube.

Have fun, 900F

railroader, that's a really good deal. My roommate has a stainless 10/22 that is bone stock, I might point that out to him. My only concern is, the bolt releases comes on black or silver-- the picture shows silver but it doesn't actually say which one it is.

Lord Bodak, my vq hammer is silver if that means anything if you are going by the pic or your roommate could call midway and ask. Mark

The hammer being silver doesn't matter much, in my mind-- it's an internal part. But the bolt release is visible (well, sorta-- not much of it is visible), so I would want to be sure it was the right color.
