New 22 for my son

I love my old 10/22 and still use it occasionally but I got bit by the pump action .22 bug a few years ago. Nothing fancy just a Rossi tube fed pump with an octagon barrel. Bought it used but it didnt appear to have ever been fired the guy had one in .22 Mag as well still kicking my self for not getting them both.
If you are interested Henry makes a pump .22 as well but I dont recall the price.
You really cant go wrong with a 10/22 but as stated above ammo conservation will not be easy to teach with a semiauto. It's just fun to blast away at targets even for us older folks so be sure to get extra high capacity mags or you'll spend all of your time filling up the ten rounders.
Have fun

Just picked up a new Marlin XT-22 in .22 Magnum for my 8 year old Grandson at WalMart. I was really surprised. Adjustable trigger and nice stock. Very nice shooting gun. Under $300 out the door.

The Ruger 10/22 is a great rifle and hard to beat for the price. I also like the Marlin Model 39 for the looks and accuracy. It's also alot of fun to shoot.

I know its a bit more $ than you were looking at, but please at least look at and handle a CZ 452 before you make a final decision. (A CZ 512 if a semi auto is what you have to have.) It is something that he will give his son, and his son...his great grandkids can and will be proud to shoot it. Just a thought...

Can't do much better than a 10/22.
Except for a Marlin 60. As long as you're not planning on upgrading it past a scope.
Have a 60 in the corner of my safe. Gets the least range time of all my rifles, but I still grab it when I need a loaner or something I know will shoot where I point it.

Savage makes excellent rimfires, too. My el cheapo Mark 2 will shoot dimes at 50 yards for $25 a brick--with me holding it, too!--when I can find the ammo it likes in stock.

I'd get him a Savage Mark 2 they're pretty reasonably priced and capable of very impressive accuracy also bolt actions rimfires are generaly more reliable than a Semi-autos.

I bought my grandson a Henry Lever Action 22 for his birthday. I also bought him some Aguila Super Colibri Ammo.

He LOVES this gun and likes the quiet ammo too. So do his mom and dad....and it's lots safer for a young lad too! More or less like a pellet rifle on steroids (he can take down rabbits and squirrels with the ammo to about 30 yards or so).

He can also shoot 22 lr sometimes.....but prefers the quiet stuff most of the time.....because he doesn't scare the game away.

The short barrel of the Henry is safe with the ammo - unlike some of the longer barrel guns. He gets plenty of shooting from the lever gun...but doesn't run thru the ammo quite as fast as an auto-loader.

Nice looking piece too!

(I want to give both my grandsons my Marlin 39's (century and Mountie)....but at this point in time they just want "shooters" and would not take the care these guns deserve. Maybe in a few years they will be ready.....meanwhile they (and I) enjoy them when I am there to keep my eye on em. Grin. )

Decison Made

Howdy Folks,
After much researching and reading what you guys have written I made my decision. I went with the 10-22. It was a tough deciscion between it and the marlin model 60. Had it not been for the literally thousands of upgrades and options available for the Ruger I would have went with the Marlin. I honestly did not know how many things you can do with the little Ruger. I am etremely anxious to get to try it out. UH I mean for my son to try it out. I think I see one of these for myself in the not so distant future.
Thanks for all the response.
Chris

The ruger's are nice but if you want to get him a gun he will have for the rest of his life pick up a marlin 39a pre-1983. Those are what american gunsmithing is all about.
