New .357 pea shooter

Hi Folks,

I have been wanting one of the 3 inch Ruger GP Wiley Clapp models for a while, and recently sold off some guns that were not being used, so here it is sadly on top of my “Honey Dos” list. It is the newest 1789 model with 7 round cylinder and tritium front sight. Being a GP100, it is a pussycat with 38 specials and .357s are a lot more tolerable that in my 2 1/4 inch SP101.
I’ve ordered a 7 shot speed loader from 5 Star and will probably get a Smith and Wesson 686+ Leather holster for it and call it good. I know I can really improve the trigger with a Wolf kit, etc. but I am going to stick with the old fashion method of dry firing and shooting as much 158 grain 38s and .357s through her as I can.

Ps, I swapped the nice small grips with the wood inserts for some more hand filling Hogues.

Nice revolver! I’ve got a 6” with the same grips and love them. Mine came with the finger groove Hogues, and these feel much better.

You bet 303 Hunter- the new no finger grip Hogues are very comfy.

As of 2021 Ruger seems to have
gone to short cylinder flutes.
I find it an interesting "design"
change.

Congrats on the new GP100! I'm glad to see you still have your priorities in their proper order: Gun first, Honey Do chores later! Believe me I know the feeling all too well!

Welcome to the 3” GP club, you have a mighty fine revolver that’ll be passed down to future generations to enjoy.

Mine is the 5-shot .44 Special version, I swapped the original grip to the GP compact ones and found it now fits my hands and shoots better than ever.



I also did the Wolff spring kit, I went middle of the road with the spring weights and both DA and SA trigger pulls are awesome. They’re smooth and stack free as well as being a good bit lighter than they were before. Since the spring swap the gun has been 100 pct reliable with several different loads I have assembled and my DA accuracy has improved. The swap is easy and inexpensive, I think it took me 25 minutes, tops.





Again, that Wiley Clapp GP model is one very nice .357 for sure, you made a great choice .

That grip might be more comfortable but could be a challenge to conceal. That is not so important where open carry (failure to conceal) is legal.

Wow Riomouse911 —that is one beautiful 44 Special GP you have there—love the influted cylinder and grip panels. I’ll have to think about the wolf spring kit.

RealGun—you are correct Sir, those larger Hogues do stick out when trying conceal carry. I am thinking my GP100 will be a house / property gun and I’ll keep my SP101 or S&W Model 60 for my carry. I just got back in (wife is getting hair done and I spare her the LOUD ones —and shot a few old Speer 158 grain .357s and that is where those larger Hogues shine—for me and my hands 53 year old hands.

Jimfern—yes, I’ll see if there are any issues that come up with the extra hole in the cylinder as far as timing or spacing. So far she’s shot perfect for the first couple hundred mixed 38s and 357s.
