Ruger GP 100

Well, I'm a new member here, but I just bought my first gun last Sunday; going to pick it up this Tuesday. It's a blued Ruger GP100 6" full lug. I can't wait. :D

Handling it at the shop, the stock grips feel great, but I guess I won't know for sure until I shoot it. Any upgrades that you seasoned GP100 owners would recommend?

Go to www.Rugerforum.net and sign up.

After you make 100 Post you have access to "The Library" and it's worth it. One of the fella's there wrote a Gunsmithing Tutorial called the IBOK. It deals with "do it yourself" gunsmithing for the GP100.

Congrats, I think you made a good choice. :)

1) What do you own: I own a stainless GP100 in 4 inch with adj sights.
6" blue (actually it's my wifes, but she lets me shoot it :))
2) What grips do you use?
Factory grips with the wood panels.
3) What loads do you use?
Generally .38 Specials for my wife. There's almost no recoil. Which is a good thing since she has wrist problems
4) Any modifications?
Nope
5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100?
They're fine like they are.
6) Holster
Got her a nylon gun show special, just so she would have a holster for it.
7) Speed Loader
She wanted one. Have no idea why, but I have a hard time saying no to my wife in a gun shop.:) It's an HKS.

My Ruger GP100

Ok I'll play,

1) What do you own: 6 inch GP-100 w/o underlug

2) Hogue Mono grips. Absolutely love them. I just HATE the factory grips! the Hogues give me a better grip and finger placement. man they point so good!

3) What loads do you use? I hand load 180gr. HP XTP over 16.6gr. of win 296... the muzzle flash blinds everyone indoors and will take the branch the squrles on rite off the tree! 158gr. LSWC over 15gr. of win 296. 158gr. over 7.5gr. of win 231.

4) Any modifications? Hogue grips. I got an ATCION ARMS scope mount and a BULER scope mount (no gunsmithing needed to mount) and a BUSHNELL TROPHY 30mm 1x28 reddot sight to put on the top. I have not found the 30mm BULER rings yet! Any help on them would be nice! I had it mouted with the AA mount, but that thing was just so heavy!

5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100? Maybe give it the RUGER scopr rings mount like the bigger guns.

6) Holster(s): an old leather holster i found in a pawn shop!

7) Speed Loader(s): HKS

1) What do you own: Stainless 3" GP100 with Fixed sights

2) What grips do you use? Came with Hogue, which I like, but I ordered some compact ones that've just been discontinued from Midway and some Ivory inserts from Ajax (you're welcome, General Patton).

3) What loads do you use? UMC 130s for practice (reloads too). I carry Gold Saber 125 .357s, but once I'm in the apartment it goes to Gold Saber .38s.

4) Any modifications? Nope.

5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100? Absolutely nothing... ok, MAYBE a 7-shot version, but I can live without it.

6) Holster(s): Galco FLETCH

7) Speed Loader(s): HKS. I like 'em.

GP-100: What Do I Own?

1) What do you own: I own a stainless GP100 in 4 inch with adj sights - KGP141.

2) What grips do you use? I started with a set of Pachmayr finger grips. Then a set of "regular" Houge pebble grips. Finally, I put on the Houge "Tammer" grips. They are there for life!

3) What loads do you use? Crappy 130gr. RNL bulk buy for target shooting. The home defense loads are either Remington 158 gr LSWCHP 38 +p or Speer 130 gr Gold Dots 38 +p. When I go to the range, I run a few cylinders of W-W 145 gr Silvertips through it for good measure. I would go deaf if I had to use those in the house!

4) Any modifications? Full Wolf spring kit. I can't remember off hand what weight they are. I have an old issue of Combat Handguns that described changing the springs and what weights to use - so I did! Also, new sights (partially suggested from the article). A Bowen rear sight - nice but expensive. Try the Millet first. Finally, I installed the Ruger orange sight then switched to the Millet orange inset blade. I can't recommend it enough. If you do one thiing to the GP-100, my suggestion would be change that front sight.

5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100? Bring back the half-lugged barrel 3" model for a run. I can't find one of those re-imported models around here. If everything was perfect; make it that cool grey finish!

6) Holster(s): Right now an Uncle Mike's nylon is the main holster. I'm thinking of contacting Milt Sparks and seeing if they can make a Summer Special for this gun. I would like to try sometype of IWB. Ayoob says the Pistol Pockets work - I could try one of those.

7) Speed Loader(s): HKS and Bianchi Speed Strips.

I'll try to load a picture up tonight.

I just picked up a 6" SS with the short lug. Standard grips for now, they feel perfect so maybe forever. Testing various loads now and taking note of those favorably mentioned in this thread, thanks. Mods are slicked up internals, lighter springs and Williams Firesights, aims and shoots like a dream! No holster for now (just a rug), no loaders yet (kind of like dropping them in slowly one-by-one). I'd like to see Ruger provide it in a dull SS finish with scope mounts.

1) What do you own?

4" adj sight

2) What grips do you use?

Stock, but I also have a set of rubber Hogue's. The stock grips are very comfortable

3) What loads do you use?

My reloads, which vary from 38 spl velocities to hot 357's

4) Any modifications?

Williams fire-sights, and a great trigger job. It is truely smooth as butta

5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100?

nothin'

6) Holster(s)

Don Hume belt slide

7) Speed Loader(s)

Safariland

Great gun, my only complaint is that I heard they have discontinued the factory grips with the wood insert. I like these grips a lot.

Found pics of my GP with the REDDOT mounted!

I found some pics of my red dot mounted on the AA mount!
This realy showed how tight it will shoot at 25 yards!
and thats was with 180gr XTP HP over 16.5gr of WW-296!

1) What do you own: I own a stainless GP100 in 6 inch with full lug.
2) What grips do you use? Factory Grips, for now,
3) What loads do you use? 158gr JSP .38 and .357.
4) Any modifications? bought used, original owner had action job, and scope rail mounted for a red dot
5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100? I like that whole 5-shot .44mag concept someone else mentioned
6) Holster: None yet, cant find one to work with a 35mm red dot.
7) Speed Loader: just bought the gun and they wanted like $25 for HKS at the store

the unwritten motto: if everyone wants it and nobody knows what its worth, charge what you want.

LOL, yeah, an item is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it, not a penny more or a penny less. In this case, I wouldn't be willing to pay $25 for it.

Well since this old thread poped up again I must say that I am very happy
with both my 4" and 6" GP100. Once again, I say it is the best bang for the
buck.

Hello, all...

1) What do you own: Blued GP100, 6"

2) What grips do you use? Factory. The rubber hogue grips are a poor fit for my hand... which is odd because I love them on my Mark II. Disappointing, as it thwarted my plans to have matching guns, although I have come to prefer the look of the wood-insert grips, anyway.

3) What loads do you use? Mostly handloads using Unique or H110, and 158 gr. jacketed bullets.

4) Any modifications? None.

5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100? Bring back the wood-insert grips on their new revolvers... judging by their website, they seem to only come with the monogrips now. I think the insert grips are classy, and they fit my hand better.

6) Holster(s): None. It rides in a gun sock and box when I take it to the range.

7) Speed Loader(s): 2 x HKS.

mousegun2.jpg

1) What do you own? 6" stainless (GP100)

2) What grips do you use? The original rubber with wood insert model. This grip is one reason I prefer shooting the GP over my Smith L-frames with hogues/pachs.

3) What loads do you use? In 38 spl., 158 grain RN and SWC Lee tumble lube designs over 3.7 - 4.4 grain 700X. In .357 mag, same bullets over 10 grain Blue Dot or 158 grain Speer JHP over 14.0 grain 2400

4) Any modifications? Just ordered no-gunsmith scope mounts and will install tasco red dot.

5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100? Perhaps a 7-shot plus model, like the 686+

6) Holster(s): Safariland and a leather custom of unknown make.

7) Speed Loader(s): Safariland Comp 3. Will order Comp 2 because they are more compact.

:D

1) What do you own?
6" blued and 4" stainless

2) What grips do you use?
stock hogue monogrips

3) What loads do you use?
for range fun - Amer. Eagle or Winchester white box 130gr FMJ .38spl, and whatever .357 I can find cheap (currently a couple of boxes of Remington 125gr semi-jacketed softpoint). For home defense in the 4" - winchester silvertip 125gr .38spl+P. I'll probably not buy any .357 loads less then 145gr again, as I've since seen the kind of flame cutting those 125gr .357's can do with time (on someone else's Smith 686).

5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100?
Bring back the half lug varients as they do offer a noticably different feel to the balance, especially in the 6". Also go to a higher viz front sight.

6) Holster(s)?
At home, my 4" sits in an inexpensive Uncle Mike's sidekick. Otherwise, mine have their own nice Ruger-branded pistol rugs (the new ones, with the intercept rust inhibitor lining).

7) Speed Loader(s)?
Don't use 'em. At home I keep 12 reloads in a leather cartridge slide velcroed onto the Uncle Mike's.

Some not-so-great pics:

First 12 rounds out of my 4" - factory new right out of the box, 130gr FMJ .38spl, shot two handed, standing, SA, 25 yards outdoor range (home printed target on 8.5x11 paper):

Yeah! Just happened across this thread for the first time. Here goes...

1) What do you own: My dad's old (circa 1990) 4" Stainless full-lug, adjustable sight, original rubber grips with wood inserts. I traded him for it about 3 years ago.
2) What grips do you use? The originals.
3) What loads do you use? Federal 180gr semi-jacketed lead hollow-points.
4) Any modifications? None.
5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100? Go back to the original wood insert grips.
6) Holster: Galco leather thumb-break, with strong-side and cross-draw.
7) Speed Loader: 4 HKS loaders in 2 nylon velcro belt pouches.

I have a "4 Stainless GP100, and I have had a S&W Model 66 and a 686.

There's no comparison, the GP100 is a much more robust, and better overall gun. IMHO.

Of late, I've been feeding my GP100 with Bufalo Bore ammo, and prior to that, it was Federal Hydro-Shocks.

The only mods, that I've made to the GP100 was to replace the front sight with a Millet blaze orange sight, which took less than 30 seconds to drop right in. That's something you can't do with a S&W. Also swapped out the factory grips with the newer Hogue Tamer grips, the same ones found on the Alaskan.

Regarding speed loaders, I prefer the Safariland Comp 2, instead of HKS or speed strips. Lastly, I have a Galco D.A.O. holster for this little hand cannon. The leather on the Galco is actually better than that on my dress shoes!

When I figure out how to post pictures, they'll soon be here.

1) What do you own:

Ruger SP101 and Ruger GP100 4".

2) What grips do you use?

Factory standard on both.

3) What loads do you use?

Just factory 357s and some powder puff 130 grain RN lead reloads I make.

4) Any modifications?

None at this time. I'm going to do a partial IBOK trigger job.

My "smoothing" of the gun consisted of dumping a whole bunch of Mil-Tec 1 into the action and dry firing 100 times.

5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100?

Chamber the charge holes. Cut the cylinder for moon clips. Offer "custom" services where customers can get trigger and hammer shims installed, polishing of the internals and so forth.

6) Holster(s):

I made my own holster.

01010137.jpg
Appendix carry mode

01010134.jpg

The second hole above the trigger area is for a second loop. It is set to approximately 20 degree forward cant for carry behind the hip.

7) Speed Loader(s):

HKS and Bianchi Speed Strips. I made my own Speed Strip "Protector" using kydex. I also have a pocket holder for my HKS speed loader.

Since this thread was revived I'll add my thoughts. GP100 was the first HG I ever purchased (not including a small .25 I owned briefly many years ago). After 6 months of semi-regular shooting, I don't believe I will ever need anything else.

1) What do you own: SS GP100 4" Full lug.

2) What grips do you use? Factory standard.

3) What loads do you use? Light (125gr FP) reloads

4) Any modifications? No.

5) What would you like Ruger to do differently to a GP100? Could be my ignorance, but it's fine as is for me.

6) Holster(s): None. I transport to range in a soft case.

Kevin

Mine is a blued 6" full lug.

Factory grips, with the wood panels. I tried a Hogue Tamer, but it didn't work very well for me.

Loads -- cheap; any weight in .38, but I like lighter ones in .357; 125 gr.

Modification: fiber optic front sight, which I like a lot.
Also, see photo -- the sharp edge of the trigger bit a chunk out of my finger (only when shooting .357, and only when point-shooting one-handed) so I took a needle-file to it. The area between the arrows is what did it, but I also smoothed out the edges of the trigger overall.

What should Ruger do differently? Break the sharp corners on trigger; also, they should keep the rubber and wood grips available as an option, since the Hogues don't fit everyone, and I like the looks of the wood-paneled ones better.

Holster: a nylon West Woods Landing drop-leg rig. It could be more stable and ride a little higher, but it's the only drop-leg holster I could find (inexpensively) for a revolver. They are nice about putting it together to your specs at their shop, so little adjustment is needed when you get it. This is, for me, a SHTF holster, but I do practice using it.
