New 4-Inch Ruger SP Announced

I like it. A real, one-piece 4" barrel and no keyhole? And I like the new hammer. Sold!

I had one of the '5 inch' Model 60's. I said '5 inch' because the two-piece barrel on the 60 has the muzzle recessed for the barrel wrench, so there was only about 4.5 inches of rifling.

That's good to know. Even more reason to choose the Ruger!

Front sight need to be replaced. I like old school.
It seems to be a law of physics that when manufacturers get too close to making the perfect gun, they have to do something to screw it up. The front sight on the new SP 101 is an example, as is the new trigger on the Model 70 Winchester.

I can't see "old-school" sights. They are really bad. I prefer tritium with white outlines, with gold bead as a distant second. Tritium sights work great and I can find the sight in all lighting conditions if I cannot point shoot.

Hmm, no thanks. To me the 4" barrel makes it a 'full sized' gun requiring a holster, and 5 rounds is not enough capacity for a gun you can't carry in a pocket.

Size & weight.
Ounces do count for some of us in certain applications, and I've never considered my SP snub a pocket gun. Still too big even with a shorter barrel. :)

I find myself in agreement with the sentiment that this should have been a 6 shot .327 Magnum; their original venture with the .327 was ill-advised due to the short barrel and non-adjustable sights.

I have a feeling that it'll be right around the corner. BTW, go to Ruger's website and send them a recommendation to do just that. I did - and if enough folks request it, well, you never know....

I bought the 3 1/16" barreled model about 2 1/2 months ago, not sorry, but sure wished they'd have had the 4"er then. I won't buy the newer one now since they're out, I had an action job done on the 3", shoots terrific. I'm pleased with the SP 101, glad Ruger makes them!

i see the front sight as an improvement. In fact after the holidays one thing I will be buying for my self is a new sight for my 3 inch'er sp101. The blade works, but I like the fiber optic.

this addresses the criticism of the GP100, which is it's too heavy (to carry in a holster all day)

I think it's the perfect jack-of-all-trades .357

it's for people that wish Ruger still made the Security Six

"Well now... I think I'm married to someone who needs one of those. Then I can inherit the 3" one sitting in the nightstand."

works for me !
long wait, been tempted too often to go for a 2nd SP101, this might be my breaking point

not a kit gun, nor a typical IWB CCW gun for me
but just a "right-sized" shooter
I don't mind CCW with just 5, not if I trust the gun enough, and OWB, I could do that with this one.. or just his & hers night stands would work real nice
most smaller than k size frame guns, I care not for, not with 357s, 38+P about right in a 3" with weight. Translation = 3" SP101
That full lug barrel 4" in that frame size, methinks mine hand will like just fine
front sight, I could do without the FO, but that is dead simple to fix in a wink-n-blink

Ruger is pumping out more interesting stuff to think on lately than I can remember in a long long time. This one may push me over the edge, even if I wait until next xmas to see where street price goes, and how forum feedback goes.

S&W model 60 Pro has been on my maybe list for quite a while now. It maybe just slipped off the list.

Picked my new 4" SP101 yesterday evening.
Had bought the .22 SP101 a week ago, it actually cost me more than the .357!
Neither was in plentiful supply in my area.

I think I'm going to like the front sight, my eyes aren't what they once were.
In any case since the light rod is surrounded by a square steel frame a small dot of black paint would instantly convert to a normal sight, from the shooter's view anyway.

Question for other buyers- the .22 came with a little plastic wedge device for getting the grip off, the .357 did not. No big deal but I'm wondering if the shop I bought the .357 from lost it or Ruger never put it in the box....

It's too thin, it's too thick, it should been 3", no 4", it shoulda been full lug, no half lug. I hate the front sight. Nope, I love the front sight. I want .327. Huh? .357 is perfect. Bad trigger, good trigger. Too heavy, I mean light. Why isn't it a 6 shooter, or a 7, or an 8, or a 52? I wish the sights were fixed.

If only it was a Security Six.

"But it has adjustable sights, too."

But that's why I bought the Service-Six in the mid-80s, because it didn't have adjustable sights. :) I have Pythons with adjustable sights for target shooting.

"its a little thinner than the service six isnt it?"

It only holds 5 rounds, too.

Speaking of 5-shot guns, this new gun weighs 29.5 ounces and my 649-3 .357 weighs 23.5 ounces. Does that extra 2 inches of barrel weigh precisely 6 ounces?

What wedge to get which grip off?
The grips should be the same on both new 4-inch versions of the SP, and I'm not aware of any wedge being needed or included.

No, the extra 2" weighs 2.5 oz. according to Ruger's website.

Mmm, a new desire. Would be an excellent outdoor carry hiking and such. :D I MUST have adjustable sights on a .357 to be carried afield. It allows me to mark elevation for light .38 (camp meat, small game) and .357 magnum (serious business on 2 legged predators). I would also carry this gun for small game when spot and stalking out in west Texas or New Mexico.

I've often pined for a 3" SP101 with an adjustable sight. This is even better. :D
