4227 is a rifle powder. not so good in a low pressure pistol round.

True enough murf, but H4227 is an excellent HIGH pressure handgun load (.357 mag, Ruger-only .45 Colt, .454 Casull). I use it when a less than lighter than 'minimum H110 load performance' but still magnum level load is required.

.45C can span a tremendous power range, when used with the right propellant, projectile and gun.

Gonna try some new 45 Colt loads today. Bored with the old 7 gr of Herco/231.

I've always found boring to be a good thing when it comes to handloading. Less to worry about that way.

Just my 2¢...

About 1 1/2 years ago, after a successful deer season with my Uberti .44 Special, I got it in my head I wanted to try the 45 Colt. So, I picked up a 4 3/4" New Vaquero and unintentionally a 4 3/4" Model Uberti Cattleman.

Although the Ruger was pretty good for the most part, I had personality conflicts with both of those revolvers. So a few months I bought a new 5 1/2" Uberti Bisley and what a lady she is!

I have tons of chronograph data, but it's in the shop so I'll post a couple of pictures and the data I remember. I'll post some pictures of targets below so you can get an idea of what "accurate" means to me. Please keep in mind rarely, almost never shoot from a bench and all these targets will have been fired from a sitting, back supported position.

For bullets I have a Lee 255 RF mould, an NOE 454424 4-cavity mould, an RCBS 44-255 mould and a Miha that casts a copy of the RCBS 45-270 and the ability to cast four different type HP's.

The NOE, a very well made mould, casts beautiful, consistent bullets but for some reason I get very inconsistent accuracy. The Lee is a total piece of junk that requires hand alignment of the blocks because one of the alignment pins fell out shortly after I began using it. It casts pretty good bullets that are accurate though. The Miha likewise is a superbly built mould that casts flawless bullets that shoot well. The RCBS however is the shining star. It drops bullets in the 263 - 265 gr. range and just shoots lights out. It may be no coincidence that my RCBS 44-250KT mould also casts bullets that are extremely accurate.

Anyhow, 700-X, Unique and Blue Dot pretty much became my go-to powders. With 700-X I use in 6.5 gr. Some sources indicate this load is over maximum, but Brian Pearce published it in his 14,000 psi data under a 280 gr. bullet, and at 6.4 grs. under a 250 gr. bullet to duplicate the original load. Anyhow the load always shot good for me in any 45 Colt revolvers.

With the RCBS bullet:

Unique in any charge from 8.0 - 9.0 shot very well.

Finally Blue Dot. It and the bullet from the RCBS mould make a fine, fine pair. My Alliant 2008 Loading Guide shows 12.9 grs. as a max with a 250 gr. lead SWC, so I worked up to loads in that range using the 265-ish gr. bullet. Velocity was in the 1000 fps range, maybe a hair less, and accuracy was outstanding with 50 yd. groups usually about the size of a mans fist. I also loaded some of these over the same charges of BD. Not quite as accurate but plenty good for 50 yds. Unfortunately I haven't snapped any pictures of groups from Blue Dot.

Maybe this will help some.

Thanks. I sure do like those HP's. What mold is that? That's fine shooting for an old gun with a bent handle!

I'm so sorry! I somehow missed your post.

Those bullets are from a MiHec RCBS 45-270 SAA mould I got on a Group Buy over at the Cast Boolit site a couple of years ago. Sometimes the mould maker has extras, so you could PM him or e-mail him and ask.
NOE makes them too, but not with the variety of HP pins that Mihec does. Just let me know if you want more info.

700x works great in that big old colt case. I've loaded plenty of it in them. Usually at those charge weights it works well with a powder measure and it burns very clean.
