Had a birthday coming up not long ago and so I thought I'd buy myself a present this time. Now, of all the 870s I have had over decades of shotgunning, I never have had a new one. So I decided to get myself a new 870P for my 51st bday.

Pounded around the net for a while, ran across a posting on GunsAmerica for NIB 870Ps, Model 4889. Confirmed that they were in stock and available, confirmed I wanted one. Off went the copy of my dealer's FFL and the MO, around the 20th of April. Destination was The Arsenal, Inc. in Lincoln, NE, a Remington LE wholesaler.

The shotgun arrived shortly thereafter at my local dealer's place of business. But NOT a 4889- it was a pieced together attempt at a simulacrum of same, but obviously not what I ordered. Oops...

Called and emailed the wholesaler, who promised to fix it pronto.

Well, here we are a coupla weeks later, it ain't fixed, and I am disgusted at the whole thing. Wholesaler says via email my money is on its way back, maybe he will have 4889s in stock in June or July iffin I still want one.

Anybody who wants one from him, you can have mine. This deal is one I am fed up with. I guess I will just keep on buying used.

Happy birthday to me...

Don`t know where your located but any LE dealer, or dealer who has a distributor who is a LE seller can order the gun for you.

Failing that Hoplite was advertising 870 PD`s in Shotgun news awhile back.

Lee,

I think you just learned why I NEVER buy a gun sight unseen. Even if they'd shipped the right model, fit and finish might have been disappointing.

Sorry this happened. I'll not buy an gun without seeing it first.

Good news, there's plenty of Cinderella 870s out there waiting for Prince Charming.

Thanks for the chance to grump. I thought I had done adequate checking of bona fides on this deal. Obviouslyly that was not the case.

Lesson learned, though. I need(ed) yet another 870 like I need a sixth toe on each foot, but need didn't have anything to do with that decision. For sure I can live without a new-in-the-box 870, I have for 51 years and it hasn't hurt me yet. I still have my first 870 and my second one as well, both 2 3/4" only Wingmasters from the 1970s. They still work very well. In fact I need to install a tritium bead on the 20" cylinder bore barrel of #1, to bring it up to standard (it has a phosphate finish, plastic furniture, a magazine extension and a SideSaddle already). Number 2 is the same save it has a 20" rifle sighted barrel and a SureFire fore-end in place.

And I need to get the 870 Express I'm working up for my FIL as a HD gun done as well. It has had the forcing cone extended in its barrel already, it still needs 3/4" taken off the stock and a LimbSaver pad installed. It also needs a set of Ashley Express sights and some sling swivel studs installed. Dave, this is one of those Cinderella guns you were talking about, it will be going to ideal shotgun country in western NC- you can't see far enough up there to need a rifle.

Not like there's a shortage of 870 stuff to worry about around here, even without a new addition to the stable.

Sometime, Lee, we should get together and compare our "Batteries". Bring ammo.

A quick note to all....

I do not object per se to mods and addons. I object when someone substitutes them for practice and expertise.

870s lend themselves to self expression.

Dave,

After all these years of getting acquainted via electrons it would be a great pleasure to meet f2f. I am agitating for retirement (early) in September or October, if that works out then I will have an opportunity to wander about a bit more than has been my habit for the past few years, and fortunately Md is not that far away. It would sure be worth the trip. And bringing a case of birdshot would not be an undue burden either.

I'll consider that an invite, and see what I can do to make it happen. Thanks.

Hoo-Hah! Lunch is on me! Maybe you'd like to try a Wobble Flurry? (Nasty Evil Villain Laugh)....

Welll....

Finally got my $$$ back from said distributor, so no worries there. But my local dealer is perplexed, because he STILL hasn't gotten a pickup tag from the distributor to have the wrong- model 870P UPSed back. Told him _I_ wasn't paying to ship it back, and he shouldn't either, distributor said he would send out a pickup tag and it was on him to do it. He's still waiting, shotgun's still sitting.

Hope it works out Lee. The invite still goes, but if you make it early in Sept, we may have to meet over some sunflower plants. I will get out dove shooting this fall. Bring LOTS of ammo....

Lee, what part of Western NC are you in? The reason I ask is that there is a delaer in Newland, Gene's Guns that I bought a 11-87P from, I imagine he will be at the Hickory gun show this weekend. I am going to try to drive up because I am looking for a 870P myself.

Billy,

I'm in eastern NC, down Fort Bragg way. For the weekdays that is, weekends I flee to the place in the country. I decided to let go of the whole 870P notion, the experience I had pretty well killed off the urge to get one. I'll just have to settle for all those 'Cinderellas' I've brought home over the years. But thanks for filling me in on the shop/dealer, maybe someone else will benefit from that info.

Dave,

I wish I could get there so you could see me get made a fool of by all those sad voiced birds, but it isn't likely to happen this year. If I do get to punch out early, it won't happen till the end of September or maybe even the end of October, depending on what happens (IF anything happens). One neighbor planted 26 acres of corn behind our house and it's doing well, maybe I'll get to sneak out in the back yard and try my hand and eye coordination this fall. Keep your fingers crossed for me, I need it...

Lee, doves have had my number from Day One. My best day on them had me batting about .250.

Later in the year, maybe.

Lee ,
Thanks for sharing a painful experience, you probably have helped some folks to not have this experience themselves. So Thanks!

Doves? Did someone mention Doves? :D

You do realize the story goes that dove season was invented by the shotshell mfgs. :D

One cannot measure some things in life like good eating and fun factor using money and shells as a measuring tool...

...add good friends , dogs and the BBQ afterwards...nope - some stuff cannot be measured at all...
