I kinda look at the 7.62x25 that the TT and CZ52 shoot as the grandfather of the modern 357 sig. The round was ahead of it's time and if someone would make a good defensive round for it I think it might be a viable defensive pistol. That being said, Makarovs are reliable as hell, proven under fire and modern defensive rounds make the caliber pretty formidable. Bulgarian Makarovs can still be had for $300ish and other high quality comm bloc guns chambered for the 9mm mak round are on the market for $100-$200. The two best deals out there for 9x18 guns would be the CZ82 and the Polish Radom P64. The CZ runs about $200 and the P64s can be had for about $50 less. Both are reliable and concealable. The P64 can use most PPK holsters with no modification.

With the exception of the Yugo M57 Tokarevs just coming on the market, the safety on Tokarevs is just an add-on to satisfy the import requirement. It should not be used as a carry safety, though I find it useful at the range. The Yugo Tok have a 1911-type safety.
If you were to carry the Tok, chamber empty with the hammer cocked would probably be best. If the Tok is set at half cock, it locks the trigger and the slide.
