Got a totally awesome price on a NIB EMP. I'd been ogling one for sometime, and it was good enough to go for it.

Headed out to the indoor range last night, all I had on hand was a green box
of remington UMC 9mm. I got a boatload of reloads at a gun show, but didn't want to try 'em right out of the trenches.

Stuck 5 in mag one, stepped up to the line, and fired 'em off. For me, I always hit way left of where i aim, but the group was good, just about 3" left at 10 yards. Stuck 5 more in, and then the problems started.

o) The follower in the mag wouldn't go down, like it was catching on a burr or something. After the first cartridge was loaded, it was smooth, but getting that first one in there was a bear.

o) I had several FT *fire*. Like light strikes or something. I'd pull the hammer back and pull the trigger again, and then the round would light off.

o) After the 2nd batch of cartridges in both mags, it failed to lock the slide back on an empty mag, and hasn't since. It won't lock it back when I pull it by hand, I have to force the holder up into the slot.

o) I had one FTRTB, but smacking the slide fixed that, and it only happened once.

I put a total of 70 rounds downrange, before it got too frustrating. I have to be frank, while I know nothing is perfect, I was not expecting this much trouble from a gun with FMJ that lists for over a grand. I did only have the one brand of ammo, so it's possible it just doesn't like it, but still...

Fit and finish is good, easily controllable, I shot (when it shot) way better with it, than I do with my .45 1911's, I think with a little better sight, maybe a lightpipe up front, it will really help.

Ultimately I intended this to be a carry piece, but it's going to have to really dazzle me now, otherwise, it's outta here.

I will probably take it to a smith and have him look at it before I ship it off to SA, just in case it's something dumb, and I do need to clean it, and tyr some different ammo.

SO for now, 2.5 out of 5 stars.

So sorry for the frustrations of your Springer EMP~! :(

Like you said, in a gun that cost damn near a grand you expect better
things from the maker. Our first EMP arrival was imperfect also, as the
magazine release would stick everytime you dropped the magazine. A
small scewdriver and a little parts buffing fixed that; without a trip to
Springfield Armory~! :scrutiny:

send it back to springfiled they will square it away for you. they are a great company and they stand behind thier fireamrs. give them a call, get a return number and send it on it's way.

Good luck! My EMP shot clean at about 500 rounds. Prior to that there were a few FTFs and a number of failures to lock back after the final round. Now all is well in paradise and the little critter is sure accurate. Dennis

Sorry about the troubles. I know that SA will fix it but I hate hearing about people spending the extra cash (over a $500 gun) and having problems whereas a lot more $500 guns have no trouble. I still want one anyway.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Hey Dan - my wife's EMP just started this on her second trip to the range. What did you buff to get it to quit that?

Does that ammo used lead free primers? If so, they tend to be much harder and sometimes require second strikes.

One of the employees that works at the local range let me have a go at his EMP, he was getting ready to sell it. I thought it was a great gun, but it did have a stove pipe. They are coming out with a .45 version of similar size, but I'm not sure if it will use standard 1911 mags.

Man, that sucks dude. I'd be pissed too for that amount of money. Yea, all up Springfield ASAP! :what:

Springfield makes significant changes to the 1911 design in at least 15 parts ... as well as the magazines.

The result is essentially a new pistol.

I make it a practice to avoid spending my own money on any new pistol design until it's been out on the market ... and preferably in LE use, which exposes it to a certain amount of 'abuse' :uhoh: ;) ... for at least a year. Sometimes more.

I wouldn't bark at the EMP just yet. Springfields need some shooting before they smooth into their groove. During this break in period, keep it well lubed. I'd use some Moly grease like Brownell's Action Lube + or a good white lithium grease.

My EMP hasn't had a single problem at all. I have over 600 rds through her so far. I keep her lubed with Slide Glide on the rails and some Wilson ULTIMA-LUBE everywhere else. This gun shoots better than I will ever be able to, always one ragged hole. Every range trip with her is just fun...:D

yeah i like to wait a while after something new hits the market, i might not be the one to have it first on my block but that gives me a better chance of getting one that dosen't have kinks in it. sometimes it works and sometimes it dosen't!

I discovered my EMP didn't like Corbon Power-Ball +P ammo.
About every other round would produce a "Click" instead of a "Bang".
It LOVES 147gr WWB both FMJ and HP.
Shoots right at point of aim for me at ~30 feet. (First 4 rounds = 4 downed bowling pins)
115gr WWB shot a little off.

I bought mine about a month ago.

It had light primer strikes (every hit was a ligt one, many reqired a second strike).
...And a tight chamber.
...Also shoots distinctly low.
It is back at Geneseo now.
Hoping for the best.

Hope things get better...I'm not going to get the good to great deal you got & I've been eyeing the EMP too

How the heck do you get the slide stop lever out? I have the little split piece in, and there's no tension on the spring. Does the slide have to be in a certain position? Or do I just need to get a hammer and pound it out?

I have lined up the pin with every bump and groove that I can find.

Also, in the kit came this little half-bent 1" or so long wire thing bent at an angle (not the hex wrench), what the heck is that thing for?

Slide stop is removed the same as any 1911. Sorry, don't have a pic to post, but the owner's manual shows which cutout to align with (it will be the first one as you move the slide back).

The funny bent thing is used when removing the mainspring housing. It pins the mainspring in the "retracted" position. This is a "Springfield thing" due to the Integral Locking System.

Again, this is in the owner's manual.

If I am not being clear or helpful, take it to a gun shop, especially one knowledgeable in Springfield 1911s.

Good luck.

Yeah, I can get my RIA's apart, but not this thing. I'm thinking it's just really, really tight, and I just need to get firm with it.

The whole gun is tight, no wiggle anywhere.

As orionengnr said, there's a rounded cutout on the bottom of the slide on the left side of the gun - behind the sharp notch for the slide lock - and you line up the slide stop with that rounded notch and push it out from the right side. the pain is getting the spring/guiderod unit out. You have to push it out and then slip a little clip on the guiderod. I called Springfield and asked them to send me some more of those clips in case I lose the original.

Barrel Length and Reliability of 1911 Platforms

I'm sure that many here already know this, but 1911 platforms are notoriously finicky when the barrel is so short.

With some serious tweaking, I finally got the lever out. It was in there just tighter than anything. I've taken down my RIA 1911's a few times, and it's always just been snug, so when I was really having to push on it, I was afraid I was gonna muff something up.

Anyway, cleaned it and lubed it. The mag problem is still there, I think a little dremel can fix it. I don't quite see how it sneaked through QA on both mags...
