So the new G42 is a single stack .380, very disappointing. I was hoping for a single stack 9 maybe . I personally have never liked the .380. Might as well just carry a 9mm. I know many others will like the G42. I still love my G30 in .45.

I carry primarily 9mm pistols including the G26 and will likely buy a Glock single stack 9mm when they amend the G42 to do that...which will be soon I'd guess. Until then this is simply yummy and I'm probably gonna buy one just because...I think my Wife might love it and if not I'm sure I can recover enough of my investment on a resale/trade on the single stack 9 when it arrives.

I love the G42 after seeing it in hand.

It will have its place in the same market that enjoys the Ruger LC380 and, face it, the round isn't going away anytime soon. Neither are the people who will find it the best round they can carry and effectively handle.

My wife, just days ago introduced to handguns, is no where near able to handle a subcompact 9mm. She didn't even like the mid-size .380 or snub .38 she tried. But, should someone like her want to be armed now, these 380s that are bigger than the "keychain" guns that dominate the caliber may well fill the bill.

A .380 Glock with the capacity of the much smaller LCP. :banghead:

For weak shooters, I'm sure it's ok. For the rest of the CCW market it's a fail, and with all the buzz about the new Remington R51, Glock missed the boat again.

Built because we wanted it? I don't recall many people calling for a single stack .380.

It isn't even that small really. It is bigger than a PM9

I'm very surprised at their choice to enter the single-stack market this way. Glock is a marketing-driven company and so they likely know things that aren't obvious to someone like me. Perhaps:

The 42 will serve well as a back up gun in the pro/LEO market;
The 42 will not disrupt their current strengths with the 19 and 26;
The .380 market is 'younger' and less evolved than the 9mm market and they may feel that they can just own it with this simple move

If they hit on #1 and #3 above the volumes will drive down their cost of goods significantly and they will then use that leverage to enter the 9mm market.

Just some thoughts. Yours?

A 9mm single stack would serve pro/LE even better.
Some people (including me) are skipping the 26 for other brand single stack 9mm due to the 26 thick grip.
The .380 market is saturated with smaller pocket guns that carry better.

I never wanted a .380 till I saw the G42. I gotta shoot one now and I'll probably have to buy one to do that. The only thing that would be better is if I could get it in .32 ACP and *that* won't happen. So, it looks like I'm gonna add .380 ACP to the stable again here starting with a G42.

I can't wait until they are at the LGS.....I'd preorder but that's probably gonna be expensive.

I've thought about this a bit.

The 42 will be quite successful. People have been waiting for a reliable 380, and the Glock name backs that up. Of course we will see what really happens.

I think its great. I have been looking for a bigger 380 to compliment a S&W body guard.
I was looking at the Ruger Lc380 but it will not fire without magazine inserted (i have been told) so I started looking else where. This might be my first Glock or my wives first handgun. I'm betting a 9 is around the corner anyhow so don't get all bunched up...

Love the 380 haters :neener:

Even though most of us would rather this 42 be a 9mm than a .380, I still think it will fly off shelves. It says Glock on the slide, so that's reason number 1. Reason number 2 is that I think this will appeal to women and any recoil-sensitive folks. If it is a locked breech design, it should have less felt recoil than a similar sized 9mm. My wife dislikes shooting even low-power .38 Specials from a Ruger SP-101. I know that I am better with a pocket semi-auto than with a pocket revolver, and I think she would be too, if it was low-recoil.

If the reviews of the 42 turn out to be good, and if it's a locked breech design with less felt-recoil than a typical pocket 9mm or blowback .380, I might consider picking one up for the wife to try. If it is eventually made in 9mm with the exact same exterior dimensions, I will most likely buy one of those for myself, as well.

I'll bet that Glock already has plans to release a 9mm version, and they're just testing the waters with this first.

Bingo!

With so many 380 auto pistols having DAO trigger/JHP feeding issues and many without the slide lock, the G42 will be a fresh breath of air that will offer the reliability of feeding any JHP ammunition, functionality of familiar Glock trigger with short reset and a slide lock.

There were record breaking sale of guns the past few years and there's a huge market for female shooters wanting smaller/lighter recoil pistol that's simple and reliable. 380 Auto is the only caliber Glock has not been able to sell in the USA and IMO Glock 42 will satisfy that demand very well.

I think Glock will make and release a single stack 9mm in the future also made in USA and undoubtedly will do well too.

I've not yet seen one, but it sounds like it'll be small, but still large enough to be fired well. Some of us can't use a mouse gun...

There's a 3 page article on the Glock 42 in the new February issue of Guns & Ammo Magazine.
The author liked the G42 because it is a .380 that isn't too small to shoot!
Glock 42 specs listed:
5.94 in. long,
4.13 in. tall,
.836 in. wide,
13.4 oz. empty.
Comparing to my Glock 36:
6.96 in. long,
4.76 in. tall,
1.10 in. wide,
22.42 oz. empty
Not sure I'll drop down to a .380 for that small size difference.

Glock has posted a video of the 42 to their YouTube channel:

I don't see why you all are complaining about it. It is a US made Glock 380 single stack. It looks like a nice little well made plastic 380. If you don't want one, then you can wait for the 43 (whatever that will be).

I already talked to my dealer and will try to buy one of the first ones "IF" it is a locked breech. If it is blowback then I will probably pass. I have too many blowback 380's as it is.

Are you a pro and choose to rely on a 9mm single stack as your primary weapon? I'm surprised, though I'm not nearly as knowledgeable as someone who uses a gun for a living.
I was just giving my perspective based on conversations with professionals and what I've read.
Thx,

While I do think it should have been a 9mm (and a 9mm version will probably come out in time), I'm glad to see something new from Glock.

I don't care for the .380, but if I ever got to wanting one, I'd look into a 42.

I'm not a pro shooter, but I've been shooting for years with a variety of handguns, mostly 9mm. I'm not a .380 hater and daily pocket carry and shoot an LCP to satisfy rule number one, carry a gun.

If I'm going to carry anything bigger, esspecially with the same capacity of an LCP, I want to step up the power factor. But as I said earlier, it would be a good choice for recoil sensitive shooters. I think Glock would have created more buzz by introducing a SS9mm and THEN follow up with a .380. The new R51 is drawing alot of the attention away from the new G42!

When Glock makes a single stack version of the G26, I'll buy that too. I think the coolest thing about the Glock 42 .380 is that it is small but not a tiny toy like the LCP. I like the LCP *but* it kicks as much as a small 9mm because they went too small/too light. If I'm gonna deal with 9mm snap I'll get a 9mm, not a .380.

AS guns get smaller/easier to carry, and get lighter and lighter there comes a point where you make it unmanageable for some of us. A teeny tiny 44 magnum might be easy to carry but it will sterilize me if I shoot it and I have to shoot it to know if it works for me.

I cannot understand the mentality that if Glock (or whoever) made a .380 or a .32 or a .22 in "that size and capacity" of a gun they could have made it in 9mm or 10mm, or .40 or .45 and someone would have liked it better. Maybe...but I think .380 is the hottest carry caliber selling right now and a really new, really well made Glock .380, for me, is all that and a bag of chips. My Wife is gonna love this...loves our G26 but it's just a little too much for her. A thinner .380 Glock?

She's gonna love it. I'll bet they sell so many of these it will stun everybody.

It says Glock so all the fanboys will need one. :neener:

More importantly Glock isn't stupid, they probably saw that no one can keep a Walther PK380 (locked breech design) on the shelf for more than 5 minutes so they want to get in the game. Even the blowback pocket size .380's are selling like all you can eat pancakes. Why would they pass up that market?

As I sit here at my desk I have two .380's in the drawer next to me, so obviously I don't mind a .380.
