Wooden dowels work very well and they were my first tool. But i wanted a tight fitting cartridge that wont wear so thats why i use gauge pins to the exact size i need. Beats having to find or make a dowel thats exactly .360 or .363 for my pietta chambers. Although You can always size down a dowel. I like my paper cartidges to slide in smoothly with no air space between the chamber walls and the cartidge. This ensures no air gaps or paper thats crumbled up.
