I had been wanting to buy an AK ever since i got home from A-stan having witnessed the deadly effectivness of this weapon first hand. Now for some reason there seems to be a big confusion for most people when buying thier first AK, and I am no exception. The reason for this is all this internet mumbo jumbo telling horror stories for about every AK there is. People will always tell others of there misfortunes with a product before they will take the time to write about a good experience. I thought about buying the wasr 10/63 which probably would have been fine but I decided to fork out the money for an Arsenal SGL21-61. I am aware that some would say that it is stupid to do this when you can get something like a Krebs or Red Jacket. I was drawn to the Arsenal because it is mainly an entirely Russian made AK built at Izhmash. This is very cool for me because my father was born in Russia and lived there most of his life, I also have many friends from Belarus.

Well I recieved the new Arsenal about a week ago and it cost me $820 including shipping and tax. The rifle seems to be built like a tank and there appears to be no problems like canted sights. I how ever did have a personal problem with the black plastic furniture, In my opinion it looks and feels like crap. So I pursued some wooden furniture for my new AK. I wanted the russian red look. I was not comfortable spending around $120 for the russian red stock set at atlantic arms or the ironwood designs. So I bought a beat to crap surplus stock set from the 70's for $25, and a hogue pistol grip. I decided to refinish the stock my self. It took around 3 days to complete with stripping, sanding, staining, and clear coating. I think it turned out pretty good. You can decide what you think from the pics.

I ordered six surplus Soviet 30rd mags and went to town to get ammo, Gander Mountain had zero ammo for 7.62x39mm and Mc Sports and Dicks were also sold out. I was told that ever since Tuscon people went on a buyng frenzy and wipped out there shelves. So I had to buy the expensive brass cased ammo from my FFL. 180 rounds for $100 bucks. :(

I absolutly love this rifle, I prefer it to the AR-15 that I built to be exactly like the M16A4 that I carried everyday A-stan. Man if the GySgt heard me say that he would have my head on a stake :D. Well anyway tell me what you think of my new rifle, Thanks

Looks like a purdy AK, I'll bet they weren't that nice in A-stan. Sure FA makes up for some of that lack of beaut though. Range report! (

PS next time order your ammo online!

180 rounds for $100!? :what: Aren't bulk packs of 7.62x51 surplus going for around that price per round currently?

The stock looks really nice!

I live in IL, very tricky ordering ammo online.

I will be putting up the range report when I get the chance to go.

You woulnt believe the Ak's in A-stan, We were patrolling through a village one day and searched a suspected house that was believed to be aiding taliban fighters. We found some RPGs, a few Lee Enfields (taliban love those things as much as AKs) and one AK-47. Apparently the handguards were some how lost so somebody just wrapped the barrel with about 3 inches of duct tape as a makeshift hand guard. If there is one thing you could say nice about the people of Afghanistan its that they are very creative, you wouldnt believe the jury rigging that goes on over there.

that is sweet and I wish you would build me one just like it....check your manual which has a list of the 922r US parts and recheck the count on your rifle (if the handguard and buttstock are foreign) Might be you need to ditch the russian mags and go with the Arsenal US polymer mags to be 922r compliant. The SGL-21 is a converted Saiga using a certain number of US parts. The black plastic you took off were some of the US parts. Nice rifle.

I pretty sure its good, im using a us made sling, us made pistol grip, us made buttplate and us made trap door and spring. I can ship you the same wooden furniture refinshed just like mine for $95. I think its a fair price considering the stock is $35 with shipping, sand paper, stripper, polyurethane, stain and steel wool are about $20, its 3 days work and $95 is including shipping. Just let me know and i will start working on it for you.

The wood looks beautiful.

The pistol grip is horrible looking, but I'm sure it feels nice. Personally, I would ditch the pistol grip and go with a nice red wood grip. If you want ergonomics, look into one of the US Palm colored grips.

Great rifle man, enjoy it.

Thank you, and I appreciate your honesty with the pistol grip. For some reason the wood furniture did come with a pistol grip but it was just a plastic one that was brown colored to look like wood.

I've got to agree with sturmgewehr; the wood looks great but the pistol grip looks wrong, like it's out of place with the rest of the wood furniture. Maybe more so since you put so much time and effort inot refinishing and staining the stock and handguards. As far as pistol grips go, I prefer the longer slender type that was used on the Hungarian SA-85.

I like the black grip. I never liked a wooden pistol grip. Matter of taste. Also that Hogue is functionally better than a wood grip.

beautiful wood for an AK. the pistol grip looks fine when the magazine is in the gun as well. but AR's look silly to me with the pistol grip without a mag inserted.

That is a very nice AK. As long as you like it, that is all that matters. I personally like the grip. I bought a WASR and shot all the metal parts with wolf gray Duracoat, added a Hogue grip, and refinished the stock set with ebony stain. It was a great gun and looked pretty mean, but I got offered more than I had in it, so I let it go.

Nicely finished project - but I agree that it would look better with a wooden pistol grip. How do you like the open sights, and have you given any thought to putting a red dot on it? And have you considered taking it to a local tactical carbine match?

Oh, and Cope's has 7.62x39 in 3 different flavors at $99- for 500 rounds. Happy shooting!

I actually really like the iron sights, as much as an AR. Im a big iron sights guy though, I dont like red dots or optics in general for this type of rifle, the only gun i have a scope on is a 30-06 bolt gun.

There are definetly no carbine matches around here, the closest shooting range is 70 miles away and its private. I have to go to friends houses who live in the country to shoot or i shoot in northern wisconsin about 300 miles from me.

That's one of the better AKs out there IMO and one fine-looking job on the stock!

Polymer is functionally better than wood, period. But he's gone the extra step of putting beautiful wood furniture on the rifle. The grip ruins the appearance, IMHO. If he wants functionality over appearance, he should ditch all the wood and put black polymer (or plum) furniture on it.

a us made sling is not a compliance part. 922r as i understand it has to do with how many foriegn parts are on your rifle. 10 or less is the rule and if the handguard and butt stock are counted separately you have 11. i'd get it straight if i were you.

i'll give you $15 to do a stock set like that.:neener:

Thats a great looking AK! The grip may not fit the flow of the gun, but i personally wouldve ut a hogue on it too. Its too bad that the rifle itself was over 800 though

your Arsenal looks just like mine! i got my wood ak74 set on GB. great minds think alike!
