New Rimfire cartridge: 17 Win Super Magnum

A 3000 fps 20 grainer and 2600 fps 25 grain pill. That is pretty cool to me. I bet the BC of the 25 grain is pretty good too. I see another Savage in my near future if the cost is close to HMR.

Not a bad idea, but unless they keep the cost down around $15/50, most will gravitate toward the faster (by over 600 FPS) and more-economical-for-the-handloader .17 Hornet, I think.

Looks impressive, but can't afford a new rifle right now. I hope it drives the price of 17 HMR down, they have gotten pricy of late. Still prefer a 50gr vmax 223 on coyote, with 3x the power, but might be a nice choice for prairie dog shooters.

If they could meet the pride point that purple are saying they will bring it to market (12-15 per 50). I personally think its going to be more expensive for the cost though.
But then i stick by my 22 lr/mag.

At first blush, I like it, but don't need it. I'm in love with my 17m2's, but after that I skip the 17HMR and go to either my .223's or .204, for which I reload.

They had a couple of these at Gunsite this morning. The Winchester rep stated that they have been making the case for a .27 caliber ramset for at least the five years that he had been with the company and that they are already tooled up to make a lot of them. According to him, the cartridge actually came out of the unused factory capacity that they have for their current machines. This is the case that the new .17 Winchester Super Mag is made from. The two guns they had were pretty bad though and both required you to extract the cases with your fingernail and had terrible triggers. I was able to group six shots at 250 yards in a two inch group standing, off hand. This is a very fun round and will be exceptional out of a good rifle.

6 shots in 2" at 250 yards, off hand!!! WITH a "terrible" trigger no less!!!

I'd have to see that to believe it!

Nice...attack me for no apparent reason. I have a range at my house and shoot a lot, take classes here at Gunsite at least once a month, shoot competitively every Sunday, and have some of the best shooting partners/teachers in the world, basically I practice a lot.

Please keep your nonsense to yourself. I came here looking to learn more about the new cartridge a share my experiences with it. What is your problem?

BTW, most others were able to get really good groups too, it is very easy to shoot.

I'd have to see it to believe it, too.

A 2", 6 shot group at 250 yards is impressive, from the bench. Offhand shooting is even more difficult.

Wow... sometimes I forget why I don't post much on here... It is not my fault that you guys can't shoot. Maybe you should stop with the internet arguments and actually go out and shoot some... How many shooting classes have you guys taken in the last year? Last year I took over 35 classes here, several twice. Get off your butts and go learn proper technique and then practice, stop attacking people on the internet for reason. Geez...

Dude chill pill. You said you were shooting sub moa 6 shot groups off hand. This is the internet so.... pics or it didn't happen.

Saying he'd have to "see it to believe it" is not an attack.

I too would have to see it to believe it. I've never seen someone shoot 2-inch groups at 250 yards (0.4 MOA) offhand, let alone with a terrible trigger.

This is not an attack- its just approaching a very tall claim with very reasonable doubt. You can't believe everything people say on the internet, so it's natural to doubt something like that. No one said you are lying- we'd just like to see proof of such mastery before we can really believe it, and you can't blame us for having some doubts.

Shooting 0.4 MOA groups at 100 yards offhand would be impressive to me. And shooting 0.4 MOA groups at 250 yards offhand is a whole different story.

Now back to the original topic. I think the .17 super mag would be a great little round if they could keep the price down around that of the other magnum RF's. If not, the small reloadable cartridges might be a much better value for the handloader.

C'mon. That's like "No, I swear, she really was hot", "It was the biggest Rainbow trout I have ever seen", "Dude, it had warts on it. Really." True, delusional, or a flat out lie doesn't come into it. Confirmation is required.;)

We'll have to see what the cost of ammo turns out to be, and if it's competitive with the 17 HMR, I could see rechambering an HMR to the 17 WSM for the extra performance, if everything else is equal.
My NEF Sportster in 17 HMR doesn't get used because of the high price of ammo. When I bought it several years ago, 17gr vmax ammo was $6.95 a box, and now it's nearly double that. I can load my 222/223 with blem bullets close to that number. That's crazy.

I am going for the 17 Hornet and reloading. I like the idea, but the Hornet gets better performance and can be reloaded. No brainer for me.

I read an article in a gunrag over the weekend on this cartridge, and it sounds pretty sweet.

However, I am with the other poster who said 17 hornet, which, were I to consider a 17 would be my present choice.

I'd like to get a Taurus Revolver chambered in the 17mag, I'm waiting it out to see if they will make one. Otherwise I'm going to get the 17hmr tracker.

IF anyone does chamber a revolver in this cartridge, it will have the SAME problems the 22WMR has in a revolver. LOT'S of noise, and low performance!

It behaves just like any other magnum revolver cartridge. The fact that they gain 300-700fps in rifle barrels does not make the .357 and .44Mag's "low performers" in a revolver, does it? What's the difference? Nothing, only that some people seem to have the erroneous perception that the .22Mag is a "rifle cartridge designed for rifle barrels".
