Today I bought a new Smith & Wesson model 642 Airlight for $339. I was shocked at the price. I was prepared to buy a Taurus Ultralight, but when I saw the S&W for $339, I just about had a stroke. The dealer told me that the S&W distributor said, "we are tired of Taurus kicking are a$$!"

That's a good price! S&W has been promoting the 642 and the 637 (same as the 642 but has a hammer) but I have not seen them any lower than $360 or so round here.

I'm in the market for a 642 and live just above the border in GA. What shop did you get your 642 from?

Oh, I mean "Airweight", not "Airlight".

I bought it at a gunshow from Shooters. They are located on University Blvd, near US-1. If you live in GA, can you buy a firearm from a dealer in FL?

The 642 is an exellent snubby. I usually use Houge grips for extended range sessions then switch back to the boot grips and shoot 4 cylinders full of +p's. It makes a great pocket gun. I bought mine as a Christmas present for myself last year. It's my favorite snubby.

I shot my new Smith & Wesson M642 today at the range. What a cool little gun!

I used the NRA 25-yard rapid fire target at 7 yards, and just about every shot was in the black. The bullseye was just about torn out. I used PMC ammunition. I've never seen this kind of accuracy in a snubby before, and I've been through three Tauruses. I think I found a keeper.

It has a long heavy trigger pull when you're trying to hit the bullseye, but that's okay in a carry piece. I got the hammerless version, so I wasn't able to shoot it single-action. I had to slowly pull the trigger back and let it surprise me when it fired.

Now take care cleaning that little bugger. People have found that the coating on the finish is easily attacked by different cleaners and solvents. Go to the S&W forum for the details.
