New Springfield XD-M!!

I've got an XD-9 SC, and just picked up an M&P 40. I wish the M&P had a grip safety (or a thumb safety), but think it looks better than the XD.

OTOH, they're both very similar, and I like 'em both. The swappable backs are a useful feature, but I think I could shoot the thing with any of them without problems. (Big hands.)

This new one is interesting, but I dont know if I'd want it.

Regards,

Why don't we wait and see how it actually SHOOTS?

The high capacity .40 (16 +1, and more with extended base pads) will make the gun (hopefully a 5" version) competitive in the USPSA Limited Division.

Adding a safety is not cosmetic. It messes with the operation of the gun.

I bought my XD because it DIDN"T have a manual safety.

You pick it it up, you point it, you pull the trigger and it goes bang.

One switchy make it go bangy

The perfect gun.

This, this is like bad breeding between an M&P and an XD

Ick

My comment regarding the 'cosmetic' issue was only made in direct response to the chorus of 'ugly, etc.' type comments ... obviously based upon that entertaining image first posted. ;)

As far as the mechanical aspects of introducing a manual safety? I'd offer that it sort of depends on what's involved.

Folks could easily feel the same way about the grip safety, you know. ;)

Anyway, these things are probably going to be increasingly found on pistols in the coming years as LE/military requests may start to include them in specifications.

The M&P thumb safety on a couple of their MP45 models was deliberately designed with a military specification in mind, and its function is pretty simple. The safety lever function serves to block rearward movement of the trigger bar when in the UP position. Not all that complicated.

Dunno what Springfield requested done to the XD design to incorporate their new variation.

I'd suppose that Springfield felt this option might have some commercial interest at some point or else they wouldn't have requested that the design be revised to incorporate it.

FWIW, I only opted to buy my MP45 with the thumb safeties because I have many years of using a similar design (and similarly located, more or less) on my 1911-style pistols, so I already have some trained, ingrained patterned motor skill responses to use, and I sort of wanted it designed as it had been in anticipation of military trials.

Interesting if nothing else. At least I have gotten to an age where comfortable to me is more pleasing than beauty, thus I have no saving grace as far as clothing choices go. :) But for this critter, as others have mentioned, I would have to pick it up an give it a whirl to make a decision.

I own four XDs and just picked up an M&P in 9. With the exception of the M&P dumping extracted brass on my head, it is a shooter and a keeper once S&W send me my return authorization and they can change the thing from no longer imprinting my head with said depleted brass. The M&P does have a great grip with the small backstrap in place for moi---and I think that primarily allows my short mitted self to shoot it well. I do think that a slight grip reduction for the XD will also enhance things for me there too. I have found it just slightly big, but still very manageable. But, if the grip feels more similar to the Beretta Storm (which I used to own before selling it a month ago) as opposed to the M&P, I doubt I'd like it as much. Just have to see.

But if S&A does offer more variety while maintaining quality, then they may gain more than they lose. Like I said, interesting....

I really like it. I purchased my first XDs this week, a service 9mm and a Tactical 45. Took a hundred rounds or so to get used to but I like the trigger now. Shot it at a match this afternoon and it performed flawlessly. I like the XDs.

I like the looks of the new XDs even more. If the pricing stays competitive I'll definitely be purchasing one.

Hmmm... about 90% think it is pretty bad. I wonder if SA ran some sort of market test before they did this to a fine pistol. :uhoh:

I didn't claim the sky is falling. Stop exaggerating.

I said it's an ugly pistol.

And I said the manual safety is an awful idea.

However thats just one mans opinion.

FWIW, it is pretty ugly. Maybe it will grow on me, but I doubt it. It would have to be one heck of a performer to push the XD out.

I'd like to see how it feels, but it had better feel pretty damn good to be able to get past those looks. I'm glad I have one of the regular XDs. I guess you could say mine is a first generation SA XD, probably made in about 2002, it has the old Brunal (sp?) finish and no cut on the light rail for the mini-light.

First, I'm still not convinced this is for real.

Second, the more I look at it the more I understand what turns me off. I don't mind the new grip cuts. I don't mind the beveled slide stop and take-down lever. I don't mind the extra swoops in near the "thumb-rest." I don't mind the new angle on the sides of the slide. I don't mind the combat-style sights. I don't even mind the new slide serrations. But the angled cuts on the front of the slide that semi-imitate the ball mill on a 1911 throws the thing all the way into uglyville. I'll bet the 4" won't have room for those odd angled cuts and will look a lot better to me.

I'm wondering how much of the dimensions got changed or if these changes are predominantly cosmetic. For example, could you have the new M-frame with an old slide? That might be kind of cool.

Notice

I notice that SA made the slide release a little smaller and out of the way... I know many undisciplined shooters (once myself) who accidentally engaged the slide release with their thumb during recoil. This causes the slide to lock while there are still rounds in the magazine. -- Doesn't happen with M&P and Glock.

Not too much of a problem since all you have to do is release it, just slightly annoying.

Still, I'll take an XD anyday! (and I do)

I would've much rather had springfield make a single stack subcompact......I assume that's the tactical 5" version. Shorter guns tend to look better to me so maybe the 4" will look a little better to me.......But so far I'm an undecided favoring the no go.

Is that a Cardassian sidearm?
