I just traded my uncle for his Taurus model 92 af 9mm. It came with one magazine, and it's a 10 rounder. I would like to use the 17's what will fit this gun? what is the highest cap mag? also there is a tether loop in the but of the grip, can this be replaced with something else? the new guns have a black cap in the place of it. also anyone have any info that Is should know about this gun? it's my first Taurus. I've had sigs, glocks, smiths, rugers, ect.. just no Taurus. I've heard all the horror stories, and It seems to me you get a good one or a bad one. so if you hate Taurus save your keyboard the trouble of replying. However if you know of a flaw or anything to look for I'd love to know. I'm not a huge Taurus fan, but I'll get more use out of the 9mm than the shotgun I traded

Google shopping Taurus Pt92 magazines and you will have pages of magazines from 10 rounds to 30 rounds. The Pt92 is a Beretta 92 clone manufactured in Brazil using Beretta equipment. Beretta magazines will not fit the Taurus as the magazine catch notch is in a slightly different location.

The standard magazine has been a 15 rounder for years but recently they've been supplying 17 round magazines. Mec Gar is one of the best brands of magazines you can get if you are looking for a quality mag.

The lanyard loop at the bottom of the grip is typical of military weapons. There's really no reason to remove it as its isn't in the way but if you really want to get rid of it you will likely need a new need a new hammer spring support from Taurus. You may want to remove the hammer spring support and see if the lanyard loop is integral or just screwed into the bottom of the support.

With the gun empty and the grips removed you can then remove the hammer spring support by pressing down on the lanyard loop against a bench surface to relieve some of the hammer spring tension and then using the right size punch push out the hammer spring support pin that holds it in place.

With the spring support out of the grip you can determine if its possible to simply unscrew and remove the lanyard loop or if you've purchase the smooth bottom part from Taurus you can replace it.

Download the manual from Taurus. On the exploded diagram the part number is 3.16.

Good advice and link in the above posts. Good luck squaring away your PT92 as they can be wonderful pistols.

I had an early model (no decocker) and found it perfectly reliable and reasonably accurate, completely undeserving of much of the dirt I had read (of Taurus products) previous to the purchase. All Taurus products I've purchased since have proven solid as well.

Enjoy!

Taurus 92/99's are excellent pistols. You'll really like it. Both accurate and reliable.

I suggest you look at MecGar magazines. They are cheaper than Taurus branded mags and are VERY reliable (MecGar manufactures factory mags for several pistol manufacturers).

Steve- thank you for your input. I will do just that. it doesn't NEED removed. I'm just one of those "if it ain't helping get rid of it people". Mine also is the no decocker model. anyone know if that can be upgraded, or is it even worth it? all my pistols are decocking, and it is a feature I have come to take for granted.

The easiest way to upgrade would be to trade for a newer gun. The grips of the pre-decocker have a different pattern on the left grip, so later grips won't fit. CDNN is selling Uncle Mike's grips for the old version now, for $8.99. They are a little slimmer. Any PT92/99 magazine will fit and work, from the 10 round one that you have, to the 15s, and the 17s.

The original Taurus PT92 was built using Beretta machinery sold by Beretta after a contract was filled with the Brazilian military. That machinery has long ago been worn out and replaced. Older Beretta mags will interchange, but the newer Model 92 mags are different, changed by Beretta.

The later PT92 with de-cock is a different gun than the Model 92 Beretta, and only a relatively few parts will interchange.

I own a Taurus PT92 from the 1980's, with over 10K through it. Nothing has failed to this date.

Well I thought I should give a range report, I just shot my new pistol today, well new to me anyway. it shoots really well, I only had a second to fling a mag at 25 yrds, but it seems to shoot left. I'll get out at a shorter distance and shoot it next time and adjust the sights.

Given a choice between a decocker and a safety, I'd take a safety. You can manually decock, but there isn't an alternative method to "safety" (other than to leave the chamber empty).

I have guns with safeties, guns with decockers, and guns with neither. Frankly, no configuration is a determining factor for me. Your preference/experience may differ.
