I recently picked up a proverbial "Like New In Box" Ruger KP97DC. This is the stainless and polymer, single stack, 8+1 .45 ACP model with DA/SA trigger and Decocker only. When I picked it up it was slightly dirty and both mags still had the factory stickers on them. I can't help but wonder if someone bought, put one or two mags through it, said "ouch" and eventually sold it without touching it again. I don't mind; I got an essentially new firearm for the price of a used one.

Fit and finish is on par with my expectations of Ruger. Quite good for the price, just remember it's not a $1000 firearm. The DA trigger is fairly heavy, but the SA is very good once the take up is past. Rather Mauser like, actually. I found it easy to let it up just till the trigger reset and make very good SA trigger pulls on the 2nd and later rounds. Ejection was very positive :) and I experienced no failures of any kind.

The only issue I have is that I'm hitting about 3 inches below POA at 20 feet. Groups were tight and on line, but if I aimed at the center of mass on the target, the group was just above the waist line of that target. Aim at the center of the head and the group was at the junction of torso and neck. This was consistant through the 100 rounds I shot today, well, with the exceptions of a few fliers when I finished the box of Fiocchi FMJ and started the WWB JHP. The latter were noticeably stouter, much more in line with my memory of shooting .45 in the army than the Fiocchi were. :)

All in all, I'm happy with the Ruger. Since it's a fixed sight weapon I may need to invest in an adjustable set to fix the low POI issue, but given the good groups and comfortable shooting otherwise, that's probably not a bad investment to make.

At this point, I'd still consider my S&W Model 64 with FBI loads to be my primary weapon, but once I'm fully up to speed with this Ruger, I could see that changing.

Thanks for posting. While I don't have one of their .45's I am fond of my Ruger P-series pistol. They are a good value. Could your hitting low be due to anticipating recoil or not following through. Before I messed with the sights I would either shoot it off a rest or get someone else that I know is a good shooter to shoot it. In my experience most of these guns are more accurate than those of us shooting them.

Good points. Nearly all of my shooting for the past few years has been revolver and they are more forgiving of many errors. I'll pick up some more white box after pay day and see. The groups were nice and consistant which is a big plus.

I also have a kp97dc and a matching kp95. They are are good reliable guns. If you are sure it is shooting that low contact Ruger. They have different height rear sights

MY experience with the Ruger P90 and P97 is that they are the most accurate of the Ruger CF semi-auto pistols. Their trigger pulls drive me up the wall, but they are very shootable and very reliable.

While shooting at under 7 yards, you mentioned that your groups are tight and consistently low. You mention that it is shooting about 3" low, but you don't mention which sight picture you are using or how tight the groups are. I would also suggest shooting it off a rest, to verify POA/POI differences, or at the least have someone of known marksmanship shoot the gun to see if they get the same result.

If it isn't the gun, I would first look at your trigger press and how it affects you grip as you bring the trigger to the rear

Thanks all!

Has anyone here tried the 10 rnd ProMag magazines? I'm tempted but not sure how well the work in the real world with the way the stick out of the bottom.

Thanks!!!

I have no first hand experience with ProMag, but they have a generally poor reputation. I would expect a 10 round high capacity ProMag magazine to be a worse performer than their generally low rated normal capacity mags.

Great pistol, overal Mine had a terible triger but on the up side it would not jam no matter what, bet my life on it.

If by chance you are shooting 185gr , go to 230 gr this will bring your poi up, worked like a champ on mine.

I have a KP90, a KP97DC, and a P345, along with assorted KP95s, and an original P85 (pre Mk.II). The .45 ACP pistols are great. You got a good gun.
