I wanted to mention a few things I've observed since I've been here. Think I joined in Nov or so 2011.

First off I am not a child, I was born in 1963. While I am not as seasoned as some of you I have well learned to respect my elders. I understand how much I can learn by simply watching and listening. And I am always grateful for the info I learn from such.

Can you imagine how many mistakes I have avoided just by observing a more experienced man, or by listening to his story's?

My friends, this forum is a wealth of knowledge, one with many different opinions, many different ways of achieving a similar goal, and many personalities.

While very few of us will ever agree 100% on exactly how things should be done, we all have an opportunity to see how others do it. Whether we learn anything from that or not we do not have a right in the context of an Internet community to insult others. Your candle will not burn any brighter by blowing out others.....

Since I have been here I have learned so much from you guys, but old members and new members. As I use to tell my staff when I was first officer on merchant marine vessels, sometimes ya learn what not to do, but if ya listen ya always learn something.

I'm tired of the bickering here, don't you guys know that I would love to spend a few hours with most of you so I could learn a little of what you know? Man you have so much to offer, there is no need to insult others to make your point.

Since I have been here I have sent private messages to a few members, they were all just the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet and tried to help me as best they could. Perhaps I choose those guys because I didn't see them attacking one another in the main forums. And at least one of em is a hell of a lot younger than me, yes you can learn from the youngsters when they have their head on straight.

Before I make this late statement, I want to explain something about myself.

I spent 17 years in the Merchant Marines before my eye site forced me to retire. I founded an Internet community not too unlike this one, although firearms is not the topic. Most of our core members have been there since it was founded or within the year it was.

To date we have over 120,000 members and I not only be sure my staff understands everyday, it is posted in the members FAQ that "no member is more important than another", we all have something to offer.

So guys please, if nothing else I said makes any sense please consider this. Behind that screen you are reading, behind that keyboard we are all typing into, is a person, a person with feelings. Think about that sometime please.

As a moderator said here not too many threads ago.... "If we were all sitting down having coffee we could have this discussion very civilly, even though we disagree".

It's true, think about it.... And be nice..

Majes

"this isn't the Christian Benevolent Society.". But it is a clean well lit place. Thank you.

Waste not want not. :)

This is one of the friendliest gun forums I've ever seen. It definitely got me back into favorite sport then I got hooked on blackpowder shooting. I went from having a few homemade pistols and some pellet guns to having more guns than anyone I know. Through the guidance of others I've become a very skilled marksman too!

Majes, I agree with DD1 they are good words but I think your preaching to the choir on this forum. I've been on this forum for many years and I might have missed it but I can't think of a time when a moderator had to step in to tell us to play nice. There is a couple of reasons for this:
New member encouragement, we are very helpful to and understanding of newbies because we realize that the growth in popularity of our passion will encourage manufacturers to build for us.
Brand loyalty or bias, unlike the modern shooters we have only a handful of manufacturers to be "loyal" to. We do have the Colt vs. Remington bias and the real black vs. substitute bias but be it pistol or rifle, inline or sidelock, percussion or flint we just want our members to get out and shoot and then tell us about their pleasures and problems. We will praise you for a great day at the range or your latest deer taken and we will smile at your latest screw up.
I've said it before that there is a unique mind-set of a shooter that takes one shot at a time and enjoys and learns from each round.

Well put and I respectfully disagree with our administrator regarding it being "Off Topic". We recently lost a very knowledgeable participant in this forum because of an unfortunate mis-understanding. I hope he decides to re-join the fray at some point in time.

a clean well lit place

Hemingway? :)
Ironically "A Clean, Well Lighted Place" involves a young waiter telling a deaf man that he should've killed himself last week instead of staying up late at the cafe, keeping the waiter from his family.
Which isn't very High Road at all, lol. But I get what you're saying :)

I like it 'round these parts mostly 'cause folks don't seem overly concerned about being agreed with. As we get "more rings on our tree" being RIGHT becomes more an internal thing and being agreed with becomes less important. We appreciate you noticing the difference around here. We're glad for you to join us. ;)

The OP is thought-provoking and well-written but, IMHO, this is one of the kindest and most repectful forums I've ever been a part of. If anyone is guilty of going off half-cocked it's me but I always try to make things right. I should avoid forums when I'm too tired and am drinking.:uhoh:

I'd like to know what other forums make this one seem hostile.:)

I like that there are so many like minded people here. I'm not like other college students, I don't buy into the stuff they do. It's good to be agreed with, and to find so many patriots here who are in the asset column of society. And there are people who served with our heroes in law enforcement and the military, how cool is that! The gun community is indeed a very friendly one, I have gotten plenty of guidance from everyone here. I just feel like it's made me a very well-rounded shooter to read and try all these various shooting techniques, everyone here has really helped me out with everything from what kind of lead to cast my bullets with, firearm safety, even remembering to capitalize my sentences. It's great here!

Well, I am certainly not suggesting that we all try and agree, that would be very boring.

But being civil is just human decency. As to what other forums make this one look hostile, I feel that is both beside the point and non-constructive.

I am simply attempting to make you guys understand how valuable you are s members here, and how much us n00bs gain from your experience. All of you.

Perhaps I am wrong to come here and criticise, if I am then I sincerely apologise. It was certainly not intended to stir up any hard feelings, just simply to point out what I as a new member have observed.

I have not been here long, but I also agree that this site is quite polite and peacefull compared to other "Gun" forums I have been involved in. In fact that is one of the reasons I am here. I was impressed by the "mandate" of "playing nice" being spoke of right up front and left no doubt that some "activities" that have become the norm on "other" sites will not be tolerated here. I still visit the other sites from time to time and will also say that some are "less polite" than others, but comparitively speaking... I like it here...

I joined THR because it is the classiest and most informative firearms forum I have visited since getting back into guns after decades away.

Follow up:
However, I do not remember reading any warning(s) regarding how much time I would end up spending going over new & archived posts.

I respectfully disagree with our administrator regarding it being "Off Topic".

I wonder if Art (moderator) meant "off topic" in the sense that this particular part of THR is devoted to "Blackpowder Shooting" as opposed to more "social" topics.

Pete

I'm a new member too Majes, and agree with you. THR is aptly named. I've been kicked out of a lot lot lot lot worse places, but that was politics.

I haven't figured out what this black powder is yet, but I bet it has everything to do with the black rifle that shoots the green bullets. :)

No, it's when you have an older style of gun that shoots with a lot of smoke and has no paper trail, so you can order whatever you like in the mail. It may be an older powder, but gosh is it wonderful. As for the whole green bullets thing, I don't drive a Prius so I wouldn't know. Blackpowder guns shoot all kinds of projectiles, conical bullets, balls, shot, sabots, stuff like that.

Guys... The OP may not understand that we're just teasing him. I've spent most of my life trying to overcome a mild form of autism and it ain't easy. Please let him know your just messing with him.:)

I joined this community specifically because it is one of the most civil places on the web. For years it has been in the back of my mind to explore BP shooting and reloading. Over the past year or so I have been studying, researching. Posts from this forum frequently came up in searches with intelligent, well thought discussions. I have learned a lot here and joined recently just so I could view the pics of BP oufits and reloading stations.

On the other side of this coin, however, it did not take long to find that even a forum as civilized as THR has its share of sour, narrow-minded know-it-alls. Thank goodness for freedom of association. There are plenty of knowledgeable, friendly people here and I am eager to glean all the knowledge I can from these new friends.
