I have a friend that just bought a new Mossberg 500A field model (28" ported VR barrel) and I was showing him how to break it down and clean it. I drifted the pin out and removed the trigger group as normal, then took the rest of the internals out so he could give them a good scrub down.

I was cleaning the trigger group up while he was cleaning the rest and noticed that on the top of the trigger (the flat part of the trigger when looking at it from the inside) had a small spot of "goop" on top of it. I thought it was a dab of grease and tried to rub it off, then noticed it was more like a plastic glue of some sort. I stuck my fingernail underneath the edge of it and it can be pulled off very easily, almost as if it's just a temporary packaging thing. Does this need to be left on there? After looking at it I am almost 100% certain it will come off on it's own during use and may jam up his trigger group if it comes off and gets in the wrong spot. I figured I'd wait until some other 500 owners chimed in as to why this is there before I clean it off. Mine doesn't have this goop on it and works fine...

Thanks in advance,

Tantrix

Please note: I am not a Mossberg 500 owner.

Tantrix, I'm pretty sure the 500's trigger is plastic; what you are describing may simply be excess material from an injection molding process, similar to that found on cheap plastic toys. You may also want to look at a parts diagram to verify the proper shape of the trigger.

Well, you are right about some of the trigger being plastic, such as the housing and some other stuff but I am referring to the trigger itself, which on his is made of gold-colored metal of some type. If you drift the pin out and take the trigger housing assembly out of the gun, you can see this flat part of the gold trigger....there is a very small hole near the rear of this flat part and this is where the goop is. It sort of looks and feels like melted plastic. Since it's not a lube, I can't figure out what it's there for. On my 500, this flat part on the top of the trigger is totally clean...even around the small hole. :banghead:

I took my 500a apart for the first time today and noticed the same thing. That little blob that kinda connected somehere else. almost like a solder job but plastic. I left it there, not knowing if it was intentional or something. :)

I too wound up taking it all apart (didn't start out to) and had a heck of a time getting it back together but now I know how everything goes!

You would be wise to consider that the factory put something particular in a place for a specific reason, and might just expect that to not be fiddled or else you void your warranty.
Remington does the same things with the trigger adjusting screws to the housings on their rifles.

That particular item you spotted is a trigger slack adjuster that determines the play of the trigger, and has a relationship with the extended bar that pokes up from the rear of the trigger to be blocked when the safety is actuated.
I believe the tip of the safety contactor tip is cut to length after the trigger slack is set to spec. at the factory.
