I'm wanting to put a 6-24x40 scope on a .223 target-type rifle but don't want to pay the $500-600 for a Leupold. Both the Nikon Monarch and the Bushnell 4200 Elite scopes in that power range can be had for around $400. Which of the two would you recommend? Thanks!

The Nikon will be a 6.5-20x. The Monarch is 44mm and the Elite 40mm. Otherwise, both are very good, and offer nearly the same excellent optical performance. The Elite is a longer than usual scope. It also has rainguard. If you ever use it in damp conditions that will be a good thing.

I have used both. Both are a touch better optically than a Leupold Vari-X III. Haven't gotten more than a glimpse through the VXIII's so can't compare it usefully.

If you see them in person, and neither has a better appearance to you or some such thing, just get which ever is cheaper. For extreme precision, I prefer the fine crosshairs available on the Monarch.

Have both, extremely pleased with both.

The Nikon 6.5-20 has the typical extremely bright optics that you would expect from Nikon. The Elite 4200 is right up there as well. Mechanicals work as expected on both with no issues. Both have held zero, and the adjustments are consistant and repetitive.
The decision will probably rest on the other features desired. If you want a mildot reticle you'll have to go with the Elite 4200. If you want target turrets Nikon is the choice. The Elite 4200 6.5-24 is almost 2-1/2 inches longer than the Nikon. The length difference never really made a difference to me but it might to you.

FWIW Burris also makes some excellent offerings in that price range, you may want to investigate. I have always found their products to be top notch as well.

Take Care

I love the 4200 6-24. Excellent clarity with respect to the optics. The only complaint is that it is long. And, that is nothing bad. If you are into shooting at long ranges, you might want to get a sloped one pc. scope base to build some elevation into the equation. The 4200 does not have that much elevation to use. Otherwise it is great scope for the 223. I have had no problem with any of the three that I have owned!

Hi, Robert! Guess what: I'm thinking about getting another 700VS only in .223 this time and this scope would go on it! This is going to be a tough choice as both of these scopes have gotten excellent comments. I guess it will boil down to price (and they are close there, too!). :)

I've had both - its nearly a coin flip. Look through both and just pick the one you feel comfortable with.
