Looking for advice for a scope purchase for a Remington T bolt .17 HMR. I have narrowed it down to 2 choices based on price;

Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40 AO
Nikon 4-16 x 50SF Monarch

Given the 2 scopes are close in price, (Elite is $40 more) which would you choose, and what do you think about the scope choice for the gun. I would like to shoot out to 150-200 yards for target shooting and hunting in the praries.

I currently have a Bushnell trophy 3-9 x 40 mounted with Leupold bases and rings. I have never mounted a scope, will there be any trouble mounting the new scope with the Leupold set-up. Is this something I can do myself?

Looking to buy from Optics Planet or 4seasons given they ship to Canada, are these reputable outfits?

To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't spend that much on optics (<a statement I don't think I have EVER made before) for a rimfire, but both are god choices. I like the Elite a little better and it has better magnification which will be handy for that little .17cal bullet (assuming this is for target/varmint work only). I haven't done business with 4Seasons, but Optics Planet has good service, and anything is better than SWFA. Other good retailers include Liberty Optics (mainly deals with tactical optics so I doubt that he has what you need, but he offers a THR discount for members and great service), and Midway (there are several of these so I am sure that at least one ships to Canada). The following is a coupon code for Optics Planet (used it a couple days ago so it should still be good): bx5sm9g.

:)

Maybe if I stepped down to an Elite 3200 series, I could probably get it around $300 and that should be more than enough in your opinion.

Thanks for the coupon and the shops you recommended.

No problem, and don't let me discourage you, good optics are good optics no matter what rifle you choose to place them on. That said, I think the Elite 3200 would serve you just as well.

:)

I just bought this .17 HMR

I just bought this Traditions scope with my new .17 HMR 3-9x40 (It's 32 or 40, already forget). It's pretty clear but I haven't even had time to sight it in and obviously shoot it. - 46$

I think both are good choices.

FWIW, here are the scopes that I either have, or have had, on .17 Hummers:

1. Mueller Eradicator 8.5-25x50mm AO
2. (that same) Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40mm AO
3. Sightron S2, 4.5-14x42mm AO, IR
4. Bushnell Banner 6-18x50mm AO
5. Millett Buck Gold Target/Varmint 6-24x56mm AO

My favorite is the Sightron, followed *closely* by the Elite 4200. For the $$, the Eradicator ain't too bad neither.

Ok Maverick

I think I will spend a little more and get the good scope, Dr. Tad seems to have some good glass ideas that run similar to what I have picked. I'm going to look at the Sightron and then it's off to the store to get it done.

A friend of mine is trying to sell me his new CZ 223, which I might buy if the price is right. The scope would work just as well or better on that gun too.

Ian, nice looking .17, you and Josh got scopes for under $70, I can't even buy a sandwich and a banana for that here, things are pretty pricy. Can't believe the good prices I've seen online.

Thanks all.

I'm not sure if the Monarch has the same SF as the Buckmaster but on the Buckmaster the minimum focus is 50 yards. Thats fine for centerfire but I was hoping to toss the scope on a few rimfires and shoot at 25 yards. Not a big deal as it went on the CZ 527 in .223 and fits very well on that rifle.

The issue I have with the Bushnell for rimfire use, even 17hmr, is that they have relatively small elevation adjustments compared to the market. Trying to shoot from fairly close out to a couple hundred yards, especially with a .22lr, is a problem with the Bushnell line. I just checked Bushnell's website and the scope has a total of 26" at 100 yards. Assuming you get the scope zeroed in the center of the adjustment range you have 13" each way at 100 yards, and 26" of up at 200 yards. From a 100 yard zero you are going to be only down 8" or so at 200 yards which is well within the adjustment range with the Bushnell. It only is really an issue if you are shooting a .22lr or at very long ranges. Either would go great on the .223 CZ.

the 24 x, will just barely let you see that hole from the 17 at 150 yds; it will
not let you see the holes at 200. for that , you have to get 30x or better.

Just so I understand, are you suggesting the Bushnell Elite and Sightron SII 4.5-14x42mm SII4.5-14x42HHR will be fine to 150 yds.

Dr Tad, if your still around was the Sightron SII the one I have listed above or a big sky

I use a Loopy 3x9 and I couldn’t tell you how many squirrels heads have been canoed around the 90yd mark with my HMR. Personally, I don’t think you need anymore than 12 power glass with an HMR.

I've got a Weaver 2X7X33mm rimfire scope. I'm convinced it is best for the money. Its fully multicoated on every lense surface with 95% light transmission. Also I killed a rabbit once at 150 with mine set at 4X. Not sure how much more magnification is beneficial to be honest.

RKT1,

I'm just getting acquainted with my first .17HMR (a Savage 93R17 BVSS with Accutrigger). I got a good deal on a Sightron II 4-16x42 AO with a mil dot reticle to put on it. I'm not sorry I spent about as much on the glass as I did on the rifle- a good .17HMR is worth good glass as much as any centerfire varmint rifle IMHO.

It took me a long time to catch on, but I finally see what all the uproar is about. They really got it right with the .17HMR.

If you want to spend more and have the money than do it, but you don't NEED it for 150yds...simple.

A lot of people won't like this.....

.........but if you use the original Hornady .17s, the BSA Sweet Seventeen works VERY well with that round. It's close with 20 grain CCIs, but it's on the money with the Hornady 17 grainers. I had one on a NEF Sportster with the bull barrel, made me feel like a bunny sniper. Only got rid of it because the wife won a .22 mag Marlin. Have a couple of other .22 Mags so I'm consolidating calibers due to economic reasons. I was good out to 200 yards at my buddy's salvage yard.

I'm with Lee, and will add this: the nicer the glass, the longer you can stare through it at small targets.

The T-Bolt isn't cheap. Might as well scope it with what it deserves.:)

Thanks for all the input, I did order the Sightron II 4-16x42MD AO and with Mavericks coupon saved on the shipping. :D

Recently I bought a Savage 93R17 BV from Cabela's. It came with the Cabela's Rine Ridge Tactical 17 scope. This scope works very well with the 17gr ammo. Haven't tried it yet with the 20gr.

Denied

So after sifting through a bunch of information and finally deciding on a scope (no easy task for a waffler) I buy it from Optics Planet yesterday. Today, I get this email from them stating they had to cancel my order due to export contol laws :what:

Just what the :cuss: is that all about. I recently bought a car in LA and exported it no problem and now for some reason, I can't get a telescope? What happened to NAFTA.

Needless to say I'm pretty bummed, was looking forward mounting that bad boy on the rifle ASAP. If anyone wants to bake a cake with a Sightron II 4-16x42 AO in it and mail it to me, it would be appreciated. I probably can't say that but it's been that kind of day:banghead:

Cheers!

LOL, now that's a knee slapper right there. animal.gif

I know a couple folks in the optics business, so I will see what I can come up with to get you a scope "up there".

Here is a list of Can. Retailers, no idea on which if any have good service and pricing, but it is a start. Good luck;

Mav. :)
