I recently acquired one of my Grail Guns, a Miroku made "Browning 1895" in .30-40. I would rather not put swivel studs into the stock, especially as the Schnabel forend is pretty thin. The RLO Brass Tacker no-drill harness sling is just the ticket, but they all use swivel studs mounted to the mag tube on the various models. The 1895 would need a barrel band swivel stud.

So, my queries are as follows:

  • Is there another solution that's as nice as the RLO harness sling?
  • Has anyone done this with an 1895 and if so, what did you use for a barrel band swivel stud?
  • Can you point me to a barrel band swivel stud that will work with the Model 1895?

Thanks very much.

I have the same rifle and use a shotgun carrying sling, with slip loops that go on the pistol grip or butt stock and barrel. I also use one on my baby sharps.

Not that you are likely to want to cut on the gun, but if wondering how they installed a carry strap on these back in the day, they generally (from the factory) dovetailed into the barrel!

I know not your mode (a Model 1886 No. 3 and very much not mine!) but best photo I could find of something like that from the era.

IF it won't interfere with the sight picture, leather banding as eastbank showed is the easiest, and least destructive method. This specializes in them but others also exist: http://www.levergunleather.com/

Periodically, and if you get it wet specifically, it is a good idea to remove the leather straps or cuffs and clean/oil under them. They will trap debris and moisture. Not a catastrophe so you avoid the solution, just something else to be aware of.

Thanks very much. I had a nice chat with the folks at Brasstacker.com and made some measurements and I think I've worked out how to fit their no drill harness to my 1895. Once I've figured it out, I'll post up.

My grandfather made a sling for his marlin 336 that did not use swivels. It’s a piece of grass rope wrapped in a orangey vegetable tanned leather. One loop at each end. One end fits over the wrist, the other between the front sight and forearm. He wasn’t big on iron sights, so just before I got the gun through an unfortunate series of events that sling was an identifying mark which the police and pawn shop owner identified it. The sling is now on my fathers 336, and another of granddaddy’s slings is on his 336. The one on there now came home with him from Korea and was used for a short while to spread out the load of a BAR, and to stop it from beating him half to death. I am still not sure why he had a m1 carbine in his hands and the BAR slung over his shoulder in the few war photos he had. I guess he got used to a tight pack and a more nimble weapon.
