Yes i have shot a 338 and would not own one, but I wont tell someone that they shouldn't use one!! And also Cooch, everyone else on this website knew what I was talking about by "overkill". I don't think anyone is impressed by your definition!!

a 338 win mag with nosler Ballistic tipped hot load is going to tear that deers shoulder off, so yes theres such thing as overkill

And I'll repeat, for the umpteenth time: If ya don't shoot 'em in the eatin' part, ya don't ruin meat!

Art, you couldn't be more correct. My FIL and I have taken several whitetails with his .338WM and we have never lost any meat. Most shots have been side shots into the chest, but at least one has been head on into the chest between the shoulders.

Hitting them in the chest has worked for us from 50 yards to 400 yards.

my dad shot a deer last year with his 12ga he shoots 1 1/4 oz rifled slugs their 3 inch mags that puts a deer down! but ive got freind who has droped 3 deer using a .22 lr so as far as over kill i think what it comes down to is what kills fastest but still leaving a little meat

I prefer the shoulder shot. With the appropriate bullet (something that holds together and doesn't expand a great deal, like the Partition) very little meat is ruined, and the shot is further away from a mistake than the classic "lung" shot. Done properly, of course, the lung shot works just fine, but it's not the only valid option.

Caribou,

I just ordered an M91 "Dragoon" (haven't rec'd it yet), partly inspired by your success. It won't be my main hunting weapon, but I'm sure going to take some deer with it when I get it sighted in. What's with the Czech ball ammo? Is it just more accurate, higher velocity, what?

Kodiak, the Czeck light ball "Silver tip" is accurate, consistant and it tumbles through animlas, keeping togeteher, yet gouging a nice hole through most any animal.

Accuracy, to me, is first, second is its excellent performance, and I bought up a bunch of 800rd cases, so Im well practised.

Dragoon, eh? Thats the prededcessor to the 91/30. I a Finned one, but an origininal will find my wall someday :D SWEET!

I bought the Dragoon because my wife's family has worked in Izhevsk Arsenal for generations. Classic Arms has a limited number Izhevsk Arsenal Dragoons for $119 right now. I was going to buy an MN anyway, but when I saw these old Izhevsk rifles, I hadda get it right away. I bought two - one for me and one for my son. It'll probably take ten days or two weeks to get them. Can't wait!

Boy oh boy does that sound familiar...:)
