Non-metallic 'tactical' pen?

I work retail, handing out a $30 "ink pen" to see it walk out the door isn't doable. Having it look like a kubotan isn't doable. Grey man practice says you don't work with "tactical" equipment, you look like anybody else. It's why those of us who put Papermate refills in our issue Scripto ugly issue ink pens kept them for so many years - nobody wanted them.

A high dollar CNC sculpted heavy weight pen? Nope, most of the cougars who walk into a parts store will snap them up in a heartbeat. Leave that out in a cubicle environment and gone in 60 seconds.

It boiled down to tactical pens being their own worst enemy. I went the Executive Sharpy route because it was stainless but the refills are hard to find and don't last long. Gave that up, too.

Now I just use a regular Sharpy common as dirt - which has the advantage of looking like a regular Sharpy common as dirt. It's plenty stout - take one to a cardboard double corrugated box and it's a matter of gripping it with your thumb over the cap anyway. It will punch thru. As it is meant for blows to soft high priority targets - like the temples - it should work decently enough.

Boring, or needs enhancement? That is what the market tries to tell you, but when using everyday tools, it's a matter of knowing what everyday tools to use. Spending money on an expendable and highly pilferable one isn't productive. I lost the current Sharpy the other day and had no regrets other than not having one, and when I searched for it I found two.

Common as dirt. Cheap. Works. No show and tell factor, which is the point. Tactical pens are for the tacticool EDC collector who enjoys having a lot of tactical jewelry. I settled for carrying rack grade and it doesn't get noticed or stolen. My shoulder belt is it's worst enemy.

I have a few calls in for quotes. I should know something definitive be the end of the week.

When I wrote that I forgot that it was a holiday week. A lot of shops closed early for the weekend. I'll have an update as soon as everyone is caught up after spring break.

The first quotes started rolling in and it is looking good so far. We are reworking the drawings a tad to get this to the target price point. I'll have an update in the coming weeks.

Will this be a mass-market item, or limited to forum members?
Hi silent,

This will be available to anyone who is interested in it. It will never be marketed as 'tactical' though. I'm just setting out to make a (nearly) indestructible pen.

There are a few things that I always wished someone made. This is one of them. I'm tired of wishing, and now I'm just going to go ahead and get it done myself. I am not a machinist, but I am in discussions with the best in the business. If this thing can be made (at a realistic price point), I'm getting it done. And I'll make sure that anyone who wants one will have an opportunity to get it.

Thanks for the interest...

I'd love to see a drawing or a mock up of this. Also what kind of price point are we talking about?

BTW, since it was mentioned earlier in the thread, I absolutely LOVE my Mont Blanc.

CB,

Thanks for the interest.

The drawings are getting reworked a bit. I have also been advised not to post them online just yet. My goal is to have a working sample ASAP. I will definitely post whatever I can when possible. It may just wind up being photos of the finished product.

Regarding the price point - that too depends on the final drawings and the corrosponding tooling costs. My hope is that we can implement all of the features, while still keeping it a price that won't 'hurt' if you lose it or need to drop it and go.

Sorry I don't have more specifics, but as soon as I do, I will post them.

In the meantime, here is the design we are going for. It appears to really fly under the radar:rolleyes:
;)

When you leave someone a "to do" instruction with the Milwaukee pen, it is so big and bold it is kind of like yelling at them, it even works w/ my kids. The ends are kind of blunt, so for serious eye-poking I think the Sharpie pen would be better. So far fortunately I have only had to use these for writing.

Thanks-looking forward to what you come up with!

My pleasure and thanks!

Just something of note. What led me on this quest was that I lost the Archangel pen and later found out it was discontinued. Well, just found out the the stainless steel Sharpie marker (and possibly the SS fine point) was discontinued. I carried that one too. I know that was a popular choice for this roll. I've seen them as high as $27 already! So it looks like the timing is good for this. I guess time will tell...

This project has proved to be extremely challenging. And I am really surprised by this. It saddens me that so few American CNC shops have obliged my requests for quotes. I contacted dozens of different shops across the country, and only a handful even bothered to answer my emails/calls. Truly sad. It's like nobody want to work anymore. I am trying my very best to get this made - and get it made in America. It shouldn't be this hard!

Fortunately, of the few shops that did get back to me (some only to say one word answers, like 'no'), I was able to find one place that was willing to at least entertain the idea. I'm working closely with them now to get something done. Further updates to follow...

On the pricey side. I'll bet it will be a dead end for your purposes.

Cool pen. Not exactly what I'm looking for, but interesting nonetheless.

I will be emailing him later today. Maybe he can help.

Thanks for the tip.
So, I contacted him about 3 hours ago. Already heard back from him. Class act. I will be running the concept by him to see what we can come up with. The key is going to be the price point. Getting this done at the target price ($15 to $25?) is now the biggest hurdle.

Lol...this thread has been about finding or producing a polymer pen the whole time.
Would you settle one of the first pens if these get done? I'll be sure to get you one, Sistema :)

Regrettably, this project appears dead. I've been at it a little over a month, but it feels like an eternity. Roadblock after roadblock.

Bottom line, the consensus opinion from virtually every shop and 'expert' I spoke with (of the few that even bothered to responded) was get it made in China. I won't do that.

Sorry I couldn't get it done.

I sincerely appreciate you saying that, Shanghai.

It is a pity and a very eye-opening experience. You'd think I was asking them to make the next iPhone based on the ridiculous quotes. (One shop wanted 5 figures for a sample!)

Thank you again for your kind comments.

Yeah, my investigation a few years ago didn't leave me hopeful, but thanks for trying.
