The other advantage is that a steel fan when folded up makes a very credible impact weapon because of rigidity and weight.

stinger 327,

There's a world of difference between an iron fan and a handful of keys. When folded up the thing is every bit as effective as a short billy club.

Keys between your fingers is also an excellent way to lacerate the skin in between your fingers, and possibly your palmar digital arteries. Not recommended for anyone.

What's so special about this fan? Is it a blunt type of weapon? Wouldn't a knife cut that up into pieces?

Yes, it's a blunt impact weapon. There's nothing to cut up when it's closed. It is essentially a set of steel flat rods bound together weighing a pound and a half.

So you use it like a baton or striking instrument? It's only good when the fan is as one in stick form or how does it work fan out?

^I'm wondering the same thing I've seen those fans before I never knew if they were still useful as weapons when unfolded. Nonetheless, I think they're pretty cool.

If you're curious about iron fan best to start a separate thread, but best of all is to watch enough video and see if you think any of it looks useful.

I agree, I'm still more interested in the tactical pens.

i just bought one of those Schrade tactical pens. I'm very satisfied with my purchase. The pen looks very very well made. I've actually been wearing it in my breast pocket geek style, and have pulled it out in front of people on 3 occasions, and it has drawn zero comments.

The pen is super fast to deploy from a shirt pocket.

If I take the cap off and put it on the butt end to write, I don't have the problem some others have mentioned of the cap being too loose.

The pen is a decent pen, not going to be my favorite writing instrument though, as the grip area is a bit small, and I prefer a softer surface there. It is grooved for purchase, though.

I only wish I had some kubaton training!

Not really any such thing. Technically. But it's really effective added to aikido. And aikido can be extremely powerful empty-handed. Add a kubotan to that and you'll have something to write home about.

You could also study in styles that use the yarawa.

Absolutely. I think aikido would be the easiest to find, and it'd also be effective in some other joint-locking, manipulation styles and technical forms like chin-na. But 6 months of aikido, jiujitsu or karate is enough to get most people up to speed. Then you'd be skilled enough to have a good chance of pulling off the kind of wrist locks and strikes that the kubotan amplifies.

Chinese Gung-Fu would take a lifetime to learn anything practial.

I got the conservative grey one. I notice across the board among the many different brands that black pens are sold out. Most colors available are the flashy attention getting colors.
