Hello everyone
I am new to the site, and also new to getting into firearms
I currently live in Staten Island NY (1 of the 5 boughs of NYC)
And I'm looking for some advice!!!!!!!
I am getting married next year, and I'm contemplating moving to new jersey.
As much as I would love to move to PA, I have a business in NJ and too much family in Staten island, as well as my fiance would not move to PA at this time.
MY QUESTION IS, Do you guys think it is better (Gun Wise) to stay in NYC or to move to NJ

How about a third option, if it cannot be PA...then how about Connecticut? There you might have a chance to actually get a carry permit, though it will be only good in CT.

NYC versus NJ ? Be aware that some people are paying $10,000 a year in property taxes in NJ. I don't know what they are in Staten Island. But $10 K a year on taxes is a good chunk of change.

Gun rights? Slightly better in NJ than NYC, but in some counties in upstate NY you might be able to carry on your pistol permit. NJ it is impossible to get a carry permit for all intents and purposes.

Be aware that NJ charges you $18 for the state NICS every time you buy a firearm. Be aware that the state NICS is closed on Sunday...and state holidays...and they have shorter hours per day than the Federal NICS system.

You need a firearms ID card to buy long guns in NJ, it takes up to three months to get one, costs $70 including mandatory fingerprints, 2 or 3 reference checks, mental health check, criminal check, in some towns they require a reference from an employer as well.

You need a separate purchase permit for each purchase of a handgun in NJ. Check out the property taxes between Staten Island and NJ, that might be more of a deciding factor than anything...

NYS not NYC

I left the city 1972 and been in Western NY since.

I have a CCW and own and shoot at least once a week.

Do as you choose but living where your 'other' wants might just wind up costing a divorce in the future.

Good luck.

My advice is to make these decisions early on. Having had a NYC carry permit for business, and having to give it up when I sold the business 24 years later, I left the state and moved to FL. You cannot cary a gun for a quarter of a century and suddenlly be told you have to give it up because you no longer need it.
Make your decision early on, you will likelly be stuck with it forever with the family ties you speak of. Move to PA, if the wife won't follow you , I would start to worry now. It's not that far away, and you get the best scenario for everyone. If not, depending on how important this is to you, could come back to haunt you. Again this all depends on your priorities. You don't miss what you never had.

C&G, Welcome to the site !

I'm sure, if you're diligent and perseverent you can find a woman more amenable to moving to the far less hoplophobic, (at the present time, anyway), PA. Yes, its that important ! I'd see getting as far from Staten Island as possible a short-term goal, so long as you don't get trapped in NJ !

If you can't move your business or telecommute, then the I-78.80 runs will take some years off your life, (and may shorten it significantly in the daily MVA lottery unless you're in a Stryker or MRAP), but OTOH life in PA is significantly better than NJ or NYS. >MW

NJ has probably the worst gun laws next to CA, maybe even worst than CA. NY is not too bad believe it or not - as long as you're upstate or a good distance from NYC.

You're not married at this time. Do what will make you the most happy. If you would love to move to PA but your SO is unwilling to move there, it better be for really good reasons. Divorce is very expensive and not just in dollars.

New Jersey is fine, except that you cannot get a carry permit, buy two handguns at a time, have a bayonet lug on your black rifle, get an NFA item or commit a crime with hollow point bullets (darn).

Only one that matters to me is the carry permit.

NYC is like the Gulag, except in Siberia everyone thought America was a wonderful country.

Here is a great site that covers firearms in NJ. There are very knowledgeable with New Jersey's gun laws and some of the members are cops and lawyers as well. If you are thinking of moving to NJ, some of them might actually talk you out of it. I have seen responses like 'don't move here'...oh well..good luck and I hope it all works out...

New Brunswick area is not that far from PA...40 miles or so over the border

and to the property taxes in jersey are high, so i am looking into a small 5-15 acre farm to offset taxes (farmers pay alot less taxs, doesn't matter how much u actaully produce), and to add i see some say find a more amendable woman i am 28 and we've been together for 13 years so thats not happening, but i know her parents are planning to move to PA in about 5-8 years for retirement, so i hoping jersey is the quick right out of nyc but a short hop to PA, also i was looking around and saw that M1 carbines are not legal in jersey same as here in NYC. Is it legal to own a M1 carbine in PA Vacation home while being an out of state resident
and thanks for the link midwest

I was almost going to do that same move. Just move right across the river to NJ. It'll be much easier to get the guns you want there vs NYC. You'll still be close to family.

You could probably move up to Ossining and take the train in as well. Though, if you're that far away, I'd just move to CT. Have you thought about Bethlehem, PA? It's actually considered "commuting distance" to NYC.

You DO NOT want to come to NJ, trust me. You're in a gray area of the law 99% of the time and the police are none too friendly about it.

To any interested,

Although it may not be practical at this stage in your life, consider Southern Delaware. Gun friendly state, ccw is simple, open carry legal. No sales tax and cheap property tax. The downside...no full auto weapons and the Northern most county, 1 of 3, New Castle, is just a suburb of Philadelphia!

If you can't get to PA you're basically screwed. Also, you may want to look at those relationship red flags NOW before you are legally, and financially committed. You built a business on your own. Don't lose it needlessly.

Forget about the gun issue.
Where you go is about the economics of it.
Taxes, Costs, Commute time all that good stuff.

I lived in westchester. Over a 40 years period I worked in NYS, NYC, CT, NJ,PA.

Stop telling him to find a new woman. I'm sure she's fine. I've lived in NYC or under 15 minutes from it for most of my life. It's a great place to be young - there's nothing in the world like new York. I wouldn't be in such a rush to get away and into PA. This is probably a fairly unpopular opinion here on THR, but there's more to life than guns.

Are property taxes high? &^%$*& yes they are. My parents live in Bergen County and pay north of $18K annually.

Hands down, NJ is the LEAST friendly state to both gun owners AND business owners in the USA. However, from a gun perspective, living in the 5 Boros is worse. I'd move to NJ. Closer to work, better gun laws than Staten Island, and best of all, you don't have to live in Staten Island.

Thank you everyone
maybe in the first post I should have said Staten Island or New Jersey (have to remember where my life of family, and business revolves)
Some of you have been very helpful, and I appericate it
And I know jersey isn't the best state but from what i get from everyone its definity an improvment over NYC
For all of you who live in jersey, do you know if any county's are worse then others (gun wise) i plan to look at somerset, middlesex, eastern hunderton (near clinton or lebanon), morris (along I-78)
And also A BIG THANKS TO rjrivero FOR HELPING ME in support of my new NRA life membership

Hey, it's not too late to re-consider. Move outside of City borders to the North, even Westchester County is better than Jersey. The commute is really convenient if you work in the city and Jersey is a very short drive away. It takes me 10 mins to get to GWB on 87. I live in a better section of Yonkers and the taxes are not too bad as compared to New Jersey and other places in Westchester.

And an M1 Carbine is legal in NYC, as long as you show proof of purchase for a 5-rd magazine. I know a gentleman that had successfully registered an M1 on his NYC rifle/shotgun permit.

Counties all seem pretty similar as to their friendliness/unfriendliness toward firearms owners. It really all comes down to the town police chief. Your FID/permits should, by law, take no more than 30 days. A couple of sites/organizations to consider:

gunforhireradio.com - podcast

NJ2AS - NJ Second Amendment Society. They will help you if your town tries to do anything illegal regarding you securing your FID/permits.

NJgunforums.com - decent website run by a Democrat that discovered guns a couple of years ago.

NJ gun laws suck. It is essentially illegal to own/transport handguns in NJ. We have to work with the "exemptions" stated in the law. There is NO second amendment in our state constitution. That said, they're better than those in NYC or the boros. Just know that if you move here (NJ) you will NOT be able to transport your firearm with an end destination into NYC or the boros.

I really do recommend the GFH Radio podcast and NJ2AS. Really great resources. Feel free to PM me if you would like any assistance.

(My wife was living on SI when I met her, I was in Bayonne.)

Good luck.

I used to live on Bay Street in Rosebank. Lots of family still there. Is NJ gun friendly? No, but it's far from a gulag. I always love when people suggest we pack everything in and move. The fact that you have a business obviously limits your options, so I would suggest settling south of New Brunswick. I'm an hour from New Brunswick and in the middle of the Pinelands. I know people that shoot in their back yard. I can't carry, but have every gun I want and several clubs and ranges within 20 minutes. Fort Dix has a good range within 30 minutes of New Brunswick and open to the public. Taxes are high, but so are incomes. 5+ acres gets you a farmette and favorable taxes as long as you earn at least $500 (I think) from working it. As a rule, look south of 195.

Welcome to THR, and NJ.
